The Daily Grind

A WaPo article finds the DOW 30 has lowered their tax burden over the years. In 69 Procter & Gamble was taxed at 40% Since going global their current tax has melted away to 15%. Most have been able to reduce their tax rate by half. The reason is not just tax loopholes. With globalization, corporations are able to move their capital around the world, parking profits in tax havens, off limits to the IRS.

Countries have discovered that after negotiating sweet tax deals for corporations they find that the global corporation has found ways to pay nothing or near zero in taxes. In Britain, Starbucks paid almost nothing in taxes over the last 3 years while earning $600M in 2011. Eventually, after some minor protests, Starbucks paid $30M to quite things down.

Re immigration: Between 2001 and 2011 some 9.5M illegal border crossers were returned. John McCain visited the border recently to declare the border secure. A woman, incoming illegal, scaled an 18ft fence during their photo-op and nearly fell onto McCain and Schumer.

Fox News reports that Fannie and Freddie are deep into the taxpayers pocket: "In June 2011, the Congressional Budget Office said that taxpayer liability for Fannie and Freddie had reached $148 billion and could go up to $317 billion," Schatz warned.

Fox news reports that dairy subsidies cost the taxpayer $1.1B/yearly and peanut subsidies $50M/yearly. It is illegal to grow peanuts in some states.

Corpocracy controls and micromanages practically ever facet of American life for the main purpose of making winners and losers as it relates to their campaign coffers. One can rationalize that drug cartels are, through some legal business establishment, making campaign contributions to their ‘favorite’ legislative person toward keeping the border ‘open’, and so on - - -

Arlington, Va has built one of a proposed 20 bus stops, each costing one million dollars. Federal taxpayer input is $800k each. Has heated ooncrete floor, stainless steel surrounds and offers no cover from the weather and a digital bus schedule thingy.

Scratch the surface and find Corpocracy gone mad.

The Five Steps of Corporatism:

1. LargeCorp can’t compete for customers, so it lobbies the government to regulate its industry.

2. Federal regulations impose expensive rules LargeCorp lobbied for, planned for, and can afford. But some of LargeCorp’s competitors can’t.

3. With fewer competitors, LargeCorp grows into MegaCorp. It can now afford to buy out other competitors.

4. The people get suspicious of MegaCorp’s size and industry consolidation. They demand more government regulation.

5. Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 indefinitely.

Pretty good overview in a nutshell, Rhinehold. IMO, it was a pretty good ride up until circa the 80’s. An appropriate analogy is the ongoing gun debate. It’s between the NRA and the legislator’s. Whereas, it should be between the people and the legislators.

I don’t doubt that the US can ‘get along’ with this exponential inequality that is building. But, ultimately, the lesser 90% is going to have to do with less, under more constraints, pressures, etc. As conglomerates grow and eat each other it can only exacerbate the situation.
http://www2.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/power/wealth.html
Quote from link: “ As of 2010, the top 1% of households (the upper class) owned 35.4% of all privately held wealth, and the next 19% (the managerial, professional, and small business stratum) had 53.5%, which means that just 20% of the people owned a remarkable 89%, leaving only 11% of the wealth for the bottom 80% (wage and salary workers). In terms of financial wealth (total net worth minus the value of one’s home), the top 1% of households had an even greater share: 42.1%. Table 2 and Figure 1 present further details, drawn from the careful work of economist Edward N. Wolff at New York University (2012).”

Insult to injury is that after all the trillions spent on bailouts the banks are still getting $80B/month of taxpayer dollars to absolve the shortfall created by risky/fraudlent loans that put real estate across the country underwater.

Other countries that demonstrate such inequality in wealth are referred to as 3rd world countries. With 42M on foodstamps, half the folks paying no income tax and with 28% un-underemployed are we far from fitting the mold of a 3rd world country? Half the graduating lawyers aren’t finding work in law. Half the graduates can’t find work. Yet, corporate wealth is zooming into the stratosphere.

IMO, it’s necessary to bust it up, thereby, creating thousands of new corporations and bringing millions into the job force. The only way that can be done is trhu a 3rd party w/a/diff/pol/att, abolish corporate personhood and implement REAL campaign finance reform or perhaps a taxpayer funded electoral system.

Are you complaining about tax policy that allows these corporations that don’t you don’t like to make more money, or approving of that policy?

I like to consider myself an advocate for change, Stephen.

I don’t dislike corporations in general. Corporations can only mirror the people who own/manage them. So, they come in all ranges of goodness to badness.

Corporations are sanctioned by gov’t, regulated. Thus, corporations must, MUST enjoin with gov’t for their existence, perks, bonuses, etc. Corp’s looking to merge must have gov’t approval to do so. Only natural then, that this relationship leads to corpocracy, business folks and gov’t folks willing to go to any extent to serve the corporate interest.

It’s a corrupted relationship that has become extremely harmful to the country. IMO. I’d like to see that relationship changed and, IMO, the only, ONLY way that can be done is thru a new 3rd party w/a/diff/pol/att etc.

A little more tautology for an analogy: In today’s WaPo a front page article relates that “Offshore havens conceal dangers”. In 1937 the treas sec complained to FDR that millions of tax dollars were being sheltered in offshore tax havens in the Bahamas. These corporations are frequently organized with dummy incorporators and dummy directors, so that the names of the real parties in interest do not appear.”

Article goes on to say that today there are 50-60 offshore financial centers around the world holding what some groups that monitor tax issues estimate at $8-32T. Sez Carl Levin (D-Mich) has worked on this issued for nearly three decades.

More tautology is not necessary to make the point that ‘things ain’t going to change any time soon’ which calls into play the need for a new 3rd party w/a - - -

IMO, we are a nation of gov’t and people subservient to the whims of commerce. People die but corporations live forever, etc. Over time corpocracy has given us amnesty #1, the NAU, globalization, debt in perpetuity and likely to get an amnesty#2, again with the promise to secure the borders. I suspect I am the only human bean that believes it is not in the corporate interest to secure the borders, etc.

Otherwise, we have the corpocracy we deserve.
