Don’t Mess With Those ‘Human’ Corporations

Wouldn’t you like to see laws spelled out in general terms that make sense to readers and the public? Why would a court case dealing with the 14th amendment and freed slaves be used, or ‘abused’ to bring a law to life that gives corporations some human rights? Worse yet, how can the courts agree that money has any association whatsoever with ‘free speech’? How ludicrous, ‘Corporations are human’ and ‘money is free speech’. The essence of democracy, as I understand it to be, is associated with ‘one person, one vote’, not how wealthy one is. But, not in the good ole Corpocractic USA.

The Campaign Finance wars go on with an article in today’s Washington Post relating that there is an Executive Order pending that would require anyone seeking federal contracts to report contributions by the company, its subs, directors and officers to, or spending on behalf of federal candidates, parties and political committees.
This is a follow-on effort to weaken some of the law associated with Citizens United versus FEC. Also, a more limited effort to make contributions accountable following their failure to pass the Disclose Act last year. The Disclose Act would have required non-profit groups and trade associations that intervene in elections to report that spending and the funding for it.

In the ongoing partisan warfare it makes sense for the Dem’s to want a window into campaign dollars expended by federal contractors, most often Repub supporters. Checking into their contributions might influence which politicians the contractors might choose to support.

IMO, the majority agree that we have the best government money can buy. It will remain so, until we can abolish Corporate Personhood law and implement REAL campaign finance reform. Two advocate organizations to amend the Constitution re Corporate Personhood are coming to the forefront and gaining public exposure. I hope you will review the work of Reclaim Democracy and Move To Amend and consider supporting same.

Otherwise, we have the Corpocracy we deserve.

All political contributions are public record. I am always a little unhappy to google myself and finding that the Huffington Post has listed all my contributions, large and small.

The Obama folks are trying to intimidate. That’s all.

It is good for firms, unions and individuals to disclose their political contributions. But they can be targeted by activists, which is not good.

C&J, if all political contributions are public record, why is the Obama administration trying to force companies seeking federal contracts to disclose their political contributions? Why have Republicans introduced legislation (H.R. 1906) to prevent the administration from doing that? Because they will be targeted by activists? You and the Republicans are joking, right?

Employees of many of these firms end up in government, making policy. This is especially true of defence contractors. It has been estimated that each meeting of the Defence Appropriations Committee is worth about 2 million in defence pact contributions.

“But they can be targeted by activists, which is not good.”

Perhaps in a fascist corpocracy, but in a democratic republic, it is imperative that these contractors and their favorite politicians be scrutinized long, deep, and continuously.
