It's All About Globalisation

From the Washington Post we learn that agencies assigned to investigate corporations suspected of paying bribes overseas often have the corporation investigate themselves. The gov’t reviews the results of the internal investigations and decides whether further legwork is warranted or to pursue charges.

Cost is the major factor as it is in California, a state with approximately $21B of debt. The Supreme Court has ruled that due to overcrowding in California’s prisons the state must release about 40k prisoners. I read recently where the federales stopped two tractor-trailers carrying 500 people. The smugglers still had two or more hours to go to get to the US border.

Britain, in facing up to the facts of globalisation, is planning cuts that would put this nation’s lone aircraft carrier into early retirement, slash 42k troops and civilian defense jobs, and mothball its fleet of Harrier fighter jets. Then there are the PIIGS looking for the IMF to bail them out with the US putting up 18%.

And, the states are cutting back on help for HIV/AIDS patients. More than 8300 people are on waiting lists in 13 states for assistance.

Now the GAO is saying that some 4300 companies receiving stimulus of approximately $29B owe upwards of $909M in unpaid taxes. However, these companies can still participate in gov’t contracts. I assume these are the same corporations that ‘are flush with case’ but won’t invest due to the uncertain times.

China seems to be doing better at globalisation. In 2010 they had a $273B trade surplus, three times the level of a decade earlier. China is pretty good at getting around agreements and rules. In 2005 the US put a tariff on Chinese-made wooden furniture. To avoid this tariff China moved most of their furniture manufacturing companies outside of China to places like Vietnam. Maybe we should be more like China in this rush to globalisation.

Maybe we should put a tariff on wooden furniture from Vietnam as well, Roy. To think that we should give away the farm for cheaper furniture is crazy. If a country doesn’t have decent labor and environmental laws and standards a VAT should be added to any product imported into this Country. If it is an American based company off shoring jobs and then shipping the products back here an additional tax should also be levied to compensate for the lost jobs caused by the anti-American company.

j2t2, most voters/taxpayers would agree but, the Corpocracy doesnt’t.

By just adopting a VAT for import/export goods we could come close to balancing our trade deficit.

But, we are on this sojurn to put this country on a level playing field with the economies of the world. The Brits, who started this globalisation thing, is starting to cry ‘uncle’. Somehow, Germany has managed to globalise without trashing their country. Still, they may capitulate as well after a couple of more bailout rounds for the PIIGS.
