Osama bin Laden is dead. Mission Accomplished ... for real this time

A long, bloody and sorrowful quest for justice has come to an end.

Bravo and congratulations to our valiant forces in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq.

A job well done, and actually real this time, as opposed to the false claims by a lying boob in March 2003.

To all my siblings-of-spirit in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Reserves; come home safe, come home alive, and come home SOON.

Agreed on all your comments, and I too hope that this will lead, soon, to the beginning of bringing our forces home! Thanks to all and well done!

The murdering bastard is dead and every American is celebrating. I was a little disappointed in obama’s speech. He gave no credit to anyone besides himself.

Frankly, I don’t give a damn if obama gets an expected boost in the polls or not. Such things are almost always only temporary.

A big “WELL DONE” to America’s military forces.

He gave no credit to anyone besides himself.

What are you talking about?

Over the last 10 years, thanks to the tireless and heroic work of our military and our counterterrorism professionals, we’ve made great strides in that effort. We’ve disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our homeland defense. In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government, which had given bin Laden and al Qaeda safe haven and support. And around the globe, we worked with our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of al Qaeda terrorists, including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot.

A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.

Obviously, Obama gave more detail about his role than the role of those Navy SEALS because the details SEALS’ operation are classified.

The Seal team should paint a logo on their helicopters, THE EXTERMINATORS, WE KILL ROACHES NO MATTER WHERE THEY HIDE.

I heard that once our intelligence had the location, they went back through reconnaissance photos and watched them build the compound so that we knew the layout, rooms, hallways, etc.

Royal Flush-
He gave plenty of credit where credit was due.

Everybody deserves credit. The CIA and other intelligence agencies developed excellent intelligence in this one, and they found the bastard. The SEALs and their commanders did an excellent job, and performed excellently despite a setback during the job. They minimized civilian casualties, and in no ambiguous terms hit the right target.

The President deserves credit for making what could have been a Desert One, Part Two decision, and making the right call. He and his staff also deserve a great deal of credit for keeping this operation under wraps. I mean, a plot to take out Osama Bin Laden was kept secret for six weeks or more in Washington, which leaks like a sieve.

What’s more, this was the President’s policy, from even before his election. He promised he would do this, that if he had actionable intelligence on this, he would be willing to unilaterally take out Bin Laden.

And so he did. While Bush let him remain free for the balance of his tenure in office, having promised to bring in Osama, Obama, instead, having promised to take him out, made it a priority, and carried it out. There was no “I’m not really concerned about Bin Laden anymore” line out of him.

Osama Bin Laden’s dead, and dead at Barack Obama’s orders.

You folks on the right should admit you underestimated him, or you’ll continue to make a mistake that’s haunted you from the first day you competed with him.

Just to show you how much it helps to be actually looking:

US forces were stationed just a few hundred yards from Osama Bin Laden’s Abbottabad compound in October 2008, according to reports within the WikiLeaks embassy cables.

and:

Abbottabad is only infrequently mentioned in the 250,000 leaked embassy cables. The cables show the town, 35 miles north of Islamabad, also served as a distribution hub for US and UN aid in the wake of Pakistan’s 2005 earthquake.

Stephen,

I think that your comment that “..Bush let him remain free for the balance of his tenure in office, having promised to bring in Osama…” was unnecessarily critical and probably very false. I, for one, think that Bush made every effort including some that I think virtually criminal (waterboarding, etc.) to find him. I don’t doubt that Bush would have taken unilateral action to kill him. In fact, it seems that some of the intelligence that eventually led finding bin Laden began with detainee interrogations. That said, I also think that Bush allowed priorities to shift with the Iraq war. That may or may not impacted the hunt for Osama.

Obama is to be commended for making it a priority for his administration. He was clear early in the 2008 campaign that he would make it his priority and take unilateral action if the country in which Osama was residing was “unable or unwilling” to take action. He achieved his goal. Obama further deserves credit for a taking a gamble that bin Laden was actually in the compound (nobody actually had ID Osama in the compound) and the precision of the planned action.

However, commending Obama for bringing Osama to justice doesn’t justify condemning Bush for “letting him remain free.” It took years of intelligence work to find him. It didn’t just start under Obama. He managed the final act very well but the play didn’t begin with Obama.

Rich,

I agree, As much as I dislike Bush, It is true that he did everything he possibly could think of to try and Kill OBL.

This is a great accomplishment, and it only happened after a long time, and much work by many different Americans. What a ballsy thing to do….going into Pakistani airspace with (very noisy, low-flying) helicopters in the dark of night, killing and scooping up the most-wanted terrorist in the world……after a 40 minute gunfight!!!!!

BTW, how is it that no police or army showed up after helicopters landed and gunfire erupted? Hmmmmmmmmm

Because there were more than just two helicopters. I heard as many as 40 helicopters were involved. Two deployed teams of Seals while others flew cover.

Right before or after the speech, one of the talking heads said a source said 40 helicopters. I haven’t heard it since.

Miller: “As much as I dislike Bush, It is true that he did everything he possibly could think of to try and Kill OBL”

Well, which limited him, immensely, in options. The thinking capacity of Obama was demonstrably greater and more successful.

Steve Miller: “As much as I dislike Bush, It is true that he did everything he possibly could think of to try and Kill OBL.”

If that were true, why — less than six months after 9-11 — did Bush say that not only did he hardly ever even THINK about bin Laden anymore, had no idea where bin Laden was and didn’t care, wasn’t particularly concerned with finding bin Laden, didn’t consider the capture or death of bin Laden to be a priority, and didn’t consider bin Laden a serious threat?

It’s painfully clear that Bush couldn’t think of much … and not just about bin Laden.

My head is spinning: Would the real Obama story please step forward:

“Take One: Bin Laden died in a bloody firefight.

On Sunday night, Obama dramatically told the world that “after a firefight,” our brave men in uniform “killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.”

Embellishing the story the next morning, White House deputy national security adviser John Brennan said at his briefing that bin Laden “was engaged in a firefight with those that entered the area of the house he was in. … And whether or not he got off any rounds, I quite frankly don’t know. … It was a firefight. He, therefore, was killed in that firefight.”

Take Two: Bin Laden did not engage in a firefight.

The day after Brennan disclosed such vivid details, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney walked them back Michael Jackson-style. Bin Laden, he said in version 2.0, “was not armed.” Brennan had clearly implied that bin Laden “resisted” with arms. Carney amended the narrative by insisting that “resistance does not require a firearm.” How exactly bin Laden resisted, Carney would not say.

It’s been all downhill, uphill, K-turns and 180s ever since. Fasten your seatbelts:

Take Three: Bin Laden’s wife died after her feckless husband used her as a human shield.

Take Four: Bin Laden’s wife did not die, wasn’t used as a human shield and was only shot in the leg. Someone else’s wife was killed, somewhere else in the house.

Take Five: A transport helicopter experienced “mechanical failure” and was forced to make a hard landing during the mission.

Take Six: A top-secret helicopter clipped the bin Laden compound wall, crashed and was purposely exploded after the mission to prevent our enemies from learning more about it.

Take Seven: The bin Laden photos would be released to the world as proof positive of his death.

Take Eight: The bin Laden photos would not be released to the world because no one needs proof and it’s more important to avoid offending peaceful Muslims who supposedly don’t embrace bin Laden as a “true” Muslim in the first place.

Take Nine: Bin Laden’s compound was a lavish mansion.

Take Ten: Bin Laden’s compound was a glorified pigsty.

Take Eleven: Bin Laden’s compound had absolutely no television, phone or computer access.

Take Twelve: Bin Laden’s compound was stocked with hard drives, thumb drives, DVDs and computers galore.

Take Thirteen: Er, remember that statement about bin Laden being armed? And then not armed? Well, the new version is that he had an AK-47 “nearby.”

Take Fourteen: A gung-ho Obama spearheaded the “gutsy” mission.

Take Fifteen: A reluctant Obama dithered for 16 hours before being persuaded by CIA Director Leon Panetta.

Take Sixteen: Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and close advisers watched the raid unfold in real time — “minute by minute,” according to Carney — and a gripping insider photo was posted immediately by the White House on the Flickr picture-sharing website for all to see.

Take Seventeen: Er, they weren’t really watching real-time video “minute by minute” because there was at least nearly a half-hour that they “didn’t know just exactly what was going on,” Panetta clarified. Or rather, un-clarified.

Take Eighteen: Stalwart Obama’s order was to kill, not capture, bin Laden.

Take Nineteen: Sensitive Obama’s order was to kill (SET ITAL) or (END ITAL) capture — and that’s why the SEAL team gave him a chance to surrender, upon which he resisted with arms, or actually didn’t resist with arms, but sort of resisted without arms, except there was an AK-47 nearby, sort of, or maybe not, thus making it possible to assert that while Decisive Obama did tell the SEALs to kill bin Laden and should claim all credit for doing so, Progressive Obama can also be absolved by bleeding hearts because of the painstakingly concocted post facto possibility that bin Laden somehow threatened our military — telepathically or something — before being taken out.

Take Twenty: “We’ve been as forthcoming with facts as we can be,” said an irritated Carney on Wednesday.

And they wonder why Americans of all political stripes think they’re blowing smoke.”

The loonies on the right think everything is a conspiracy. So repealobama keep up the crazy talk and expose the world to your agenda. It’s not about god or country or fill in comment it’s about power. Power the republicans lost. You risk being so marginalized as a party that you will serve no purpose except to throw spitballs. This is just sad we need everyone to tackle the problems facing this country.

“So repealobama keep up the crazy talk and expose the world to your agenda.”

Jeff,

I agree. Nothing could be better for Obama than for the media to give a bit more coverage to their crazy ideas. The “Donald” raised national coverage of the birther issue, only to have it crush his candidacy in a heart beat. Even the more serious policy proposals of conservatives (Ryan Medicare/Medicaid) have received similar DOA pronouncements upon national coverage. When the public actually understands what conservatives are proposing, conservatives are in for a rude awakening.
