In Search Democratic Party Leadership
I have been stymied by the Democratic Party’s lack of leadership and coherent platform. And as Bush’s “war-chest” grows daily, time marches on, and the Presidential election draws ever closer, there is still no clear democratic front-runner. It would seem I am not alone in my dismay over the Democrat’s disarray. If they do not get it together soon, they will have no one the blame—this time—for their failure to retake the White House, but the Party membership. Indeed the only embarrassment this election cycle is the Party itself.
Posted by V. Edward Martin at July 26, 2003 11:17 PMAnd *this* coming out of the “Third Party” WatchBlog?! You can’t possibly be serious.
So let me get this straight… the lack of leadership and coherent platform among the Democrats should make supporting the mystery “Third” party the obvious choice?
Where is your leadership for this election?

John Kerry
Way to cover the third party. Also the GOP guy is either bitching about the DNC or worshiping the war
Posted by: Jake of 8bitjoystick.com at July 28, 2003 01:37 PMA couple quick notes, one to the original author, one to the responders.
First, to V:
I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the democrats. Just because they don’t have a solid candidate yet doesn’t mean they won’t find one. That’s what the primary process is for, for the party to see who is going to be best for them.
Let’s not forget the 1992 election, where at the same time as we are now, there were a bunch of “no-hopers” vying for the chance to challenge a Bush president, and given no chance. I remember a Saturday Night Live sketch called “The Democratic Primary Debates: The fight to not run against George Bush”.
However, once the votes started coming in, and once people got a chance to actually see the candidates, this juggernaught named Bill Clinton popped up.
To the commenters:
Yes, this is the third party blog, but let’s be realistic. No third party is going to win the presidency anytime in the next few elections, at the least. I’m registered Green, but I’m constantly dismayed at the party’s focus on national-scale elections, when I think they’d be better served focusing on local-level races, up to and including the US House.
A third party candidate won’t be elected president unless we first have a third party representative, showing the country as a whole what they stand for. Small steps should be taken first.
The reason I point this out is because there is no reason that the middle column should be relegated to talking about third parties, especially in regards to the presidential cycle. We want to discuss the next election as much as those on the outside of the page.
I do agree that less focus should be placed on knocking down the other parties, with more focus on promoting the alternatives, but sometimes you do have to point out the shortcomings of others to set your advantages to light.
Posted by: Jason Lauborough at July 28, 2003 02:02 PMNot sure why this is thrid party news, but heck VEM, the fight within the DNC is just what we need right now.
If we coasted along as-is, Joe Friggin Leiberman would get the nod and Walter Mondale would seem like a better choice.
The fight for control and vision is needed. And, quite frankly, I am glad it is happening now. If Dean’s people come out in control by year’s end we are going to be sitting pretty.
Even if not, as long as the Joey L’s, Gephardt’s and Kerry’s of the world are shaken out of party’s planning, the Dems will be stronger.
Now, if you are concerned about a Third Party, which one might assume you were, then write about.
All I can say is, I see a Democratic landslide sicne all the Third Party and GOP sites want to do is point out how bad the DNC is.
Well, my theory is this, an organized DNC is their fear.
Show us what you have, not what the other’s don’t.

Posted by: Robbie D at July 28, 2003 03:26 PMIf the Dems can’t find a better candidate than one of the Nine Dwarves, they will become a Third Party, so maybe this post isn’t as wackily out-of-place as it looks.
Posted by: Richard Bennett at July 28, 2003 11:09 PMDr. Dean has been beating VP Dick in fundraising I would not call him a dwarf. Also Kerry’s wife is worth 600 Mil that is three times the 200 mil that the GOP is going to spend on the election.
