Biography:

Jack is a medium old guy who grew up in Wisconsin and never went much farther than Minnesota until he started to move and didn’t stop. He has lived and worked in Brazil, Norway, Poland & Iraq and visited lots of other places.

Like many, he started off left but shifted right as his experience grew. He has been comfortably ensconced in the center most of his adult life. Jack's main ideology involves not being bothered, not bothering other people and letting things work themselves out as much as possible. In America, that makes him a conservative.

Jack studied history, anthropology and forestry in college and went on to get an MA in ancient history. He was surprised to learn that background in classical Greek was not career enhancing, so brushed up on his math and got an MBA in marketing. After spending all that time and money, he got a job that didn’t require an MBA and has been working on it ever since.

Jack doesn’t have a favorite movie, but whenever they are on he watches “The Big Lebowski”, “The Searchers”, “Groundhog Day,” “The Longest Day,” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”

His favorite books are “The Metaphysical Club,” “The Wise Men,” “Truman,” “April 1865” and “Against the Gods.” He just finished reading "The Forgotten Man” about FDR and the Great Depression and is now working on a biography of Augustus.

Jack’s favorite news programs are “The Newshour,” “Fox News Sunday” and “Meet the Press.” He reads the “Washington Post” and the “Washington Times” most days and “The Economist” most weeks.

Jack made the mistake of voting for Jimmy Carter in 1976, but redeemed himself by supporting Ronald Reagan the next time. He supported John McCain in 2000 and will do so again in 2008.

Jack owns a forest in Virginia. He has around 150 acres of pine with 30 acres of mixed hardwood in SMZ. He is managing his land for timber production, but also making sure it supports wildlife, hunting, fishing and healthy wetlands.

This year, Jack made some wildlife plots and will do some pre-commercial thinning. He doesn't really make any money on forestry, but he likes to pretend it is a going concern.
