Tribalism Today - So Who Are The Knuckle Draggers?

In Foreign Affairs an article by biologist and behavioral scientist Robert Sapolsky of Stanford had the headline This is Your Brain on Nationalism with a large photograph of a chimpanzee baring its fangs. Washington State’s Governor Jay Inslee mentions how Republicans need to walk upright (by agreeing with his view on climate change) as he announces his candidacy. Jonah Goldberg of National Review fame but soon to embark on a new conservative media magazine/website/we’ll find out, writes about tribalism and the us vs them mentality that Sapolsky laments in post-modern political discourse and early Hun military tactics on the steppes of Central Europe.

It seems if you believe in evolutionary psychology you cannot be a Republican. Or at least you cannot support President Trump.

But let's consider EP and some of its consequences
.
Apparently, we have a triune brain formed by our reptilian brains (because of its lizard-like shape), our mammalian limbic brain with its focus on relationships and love, and our neo-cortex the center of our powers of abstract reasoning. Because of the stresses of our post-industrial world, we have not yet evolved fast enough to keep up with technology, so our behaviors become unwittingly self-destructive: feasting to avoid periods of famine made sense even a few centuries ago and still does in a (very) few areas of the world, but nowadays in most of the world just means obesity-producing binges, for example.

And the brain-wired responses to similar and to different appearances among members of our species, as another depressing example. Evolutionary Psychologists tend to admit being depressed by what they observe in humans. We're hard-wired for tribalism. Free will is a fiction. Faith in a supernatural first-mover is a fiction. No wonder they get depressed and spend time in remote areas of the world studying primate behavior. It must be peaceful compared to ordering a Latte from a having-a-bad-day employee at Starbucks on the way to your lectures at Stanford. Not to mention being shouldered off the pavement by rude drivers in a hurry, no matter how expensive your bicycle is.

Ok maybe Sapolsky takes the bus or walks to Stanford. Or maybe he drives.

But here's a problem with the political narrative that flows from his work, evident in how Foreign Affairs visually framed his piece. If you ask who is guilty of the worst tribalism nowadays, it would be reasonable conclusion to say it's the Social Justice Warrior crowd, especially on Twitter. Especially on issues like climate change, and abortion. If there is a violent (and not always merely rhetorically) tribe around wouldn't it be the Antifa's? Yes, so-called alt-right tribes clearly occupy that level of primitive pond matter as well, but most conservatives are more about convincing than denouncing and expelling into the wilderness to wander like Isiah. So who are the real knuckle draggers here?

And especially, consider abortion. And consider when infanticide was common in human experience as has been brought up recently. Jonah Goldberg himself - a rather acidic critic of any form of nationalism and of course of Trump's followers - in a post in his column in National Review recently wrote this from an unpublished part of his recent book on tribalism in our modern culture:

With the exception of the Jews, virtually all ancient societies, Western and non- Western, routinely butchered, burned, smothered or otherwise slaughtered their own children (and the children of their enemies even more). The Svans of Ancient Georgia murdered newborn girls by filling their mouths with hot ashes. In parts of Ancient China, female babies were killed by submerging them in buckets of cold "baby water." In feudal Japan, the practice of Makibi (a term borrowed from rice farming meaning "thinning out") was widespread. Unwanted babies -- mostly girls, but also some boys, particularly twins (which were considered unlucky or dangerous in many pre-modern societies) -- were snuffed out with a wet cloth. In India infants were sometimes thrown into the Ganges as sacrifices or had their throats cut.

As the anthropologist Laila Williamson famously wrote:

Infanticide has been practiced on every continent and by people on every level of cultural complexity, from hunters and gatherers to high civilization, including our own ancestors. Rather than being an exception, then, it has been the rule.

If that isn't a display of the reptilian brain in action, the limbic brain reduced to the muffled agony of a mother having to kill her child because food was scarce or the newborn child was deemed unsuitable, the neo-cortex a stunted mutation unable to see a solution beyond that self-destructive horror, then I don't know what is. But no, it's Trump supporters and evangelicals who are the unevolved, the primitive the unenlightened. A bitter irony for those who order their lives around the idea of the light of their deep and abiding faith.

Evolutionary Psychology because it attacks both progressive notions of state-directed solutions and conservative notions of free will as well as notions of faith may well end up in the dust bin of history much like it's much-maligned predecessor Social Darwinism. But for now, it's unwitingly or intentionally providing plenty of fodder for those who believe killing nearly-born children and dragging people from their cars and trucks in order to save the planet is somehow rational behavior.

“And especially, consider abortion. And consider when infanticide was common in human experience “

Congratulations on writing an article that none of the reich wing readers will even understand. Abortion and infanticide are different things, just as r4pe and consentual s3x are different (see tea consent video). Why would we consider them together unless we’re participating in a brainwashing seminar.

” killing nearly-born children and dragging people from their cars and trucks in order to save the planet is somehow rational behavior.”

No one is killing nearly born children, and no one is dragging people from their cars and trucks. I’m sure that people in Alabama are happy to have Tornado Alley move from Oklahoma to there, but just in case, maybe they should have had a referendum on that. Most likely, the planet will save itself by ridding itself of the human population.

Now you’ve overdone your medication, and are lapsing into paranoia. Cut back a little bit.

Funny that s3x is a dirty word in the era or Trmp, the filth.

The U.S. trade deficit widened in 2018 to a 10-year high of $621 billion, bucking -resident D-n-ld Tr-mp’s pledges to reduce it, as tax cuts boosted domestic demand for imports while the strong dollar and retaliatory tariffs weighed on exports.

kctim,
What do you think of Netanyahu? He has been indicted for bribery. The GOP invited him to speak in Congress against the Iranian nuclear non-proliferation treaty a few years. Remember that? Netanyahu insisted the Iranians were lying. He presented information from 2009 and earlier, before the treaty was even negotiated.

Netanyahu LIED.

Netanyahu spoke AGAINST the interests of the United States of America. He did it in OUR Congress. He LIED. The treaty is still being observed by all the other signatories, but the US withdrawal has been yet another failure, and contributed yet another blow to the loss of our leadership in the world.

Lies?
That’s not proven.
It was perhaps a bad prediction.
phx8 should be able to understand that, based on all of his bad predictions.
At any rate, Iran has stated that Israel should be “wiped off the face of the earth”, so it’s understandable that they are worried about Iran having nuclear weapons.
HHMMmmmmm… Omar, Tlaib, and AOC are probably phx8’s heroes. phx8 did write the following:

open-borders phx8 wrote: AOC killed it last night in an interview with Rachel Maddow. It is understandable why conservatives “freak out” over her. They are seeing the Ghost of Christmas Future.
open-borders phx8 wrote: AOL AOC (Alexandria Ocasio Cortez) is awesome. You are seeing the future. She [AOC] is charismatic, her political instincts are excellent, and she has already proven adept at using social media.

What do I think of Netanyahu? Well, I trust him more than I do the Iranians. I think Israel and its people will suffer greatly if his replacement changes course and rules from a position of weakness.

But why are you trying to deflect to Netanyahu? Neither the claims of bribery, or what he said about the Iranian treaty, have anything to do with why those ‘fresh new democrats’ are attacking Israel and her people.

Wow…Nancy Pelosi and her mentally stunted Pals in the HOR are fixing to pass an “anti-hate” resolution.

Silly me, I always believed the HOR was against hate. My guess is that this represents some sort of “self-censure” by the Dems. Conservatives understand the hate directed towards themselves every day and don’t require a “resolution” to define it.

Nancy explained the anti-Semitic remarks made by the Somali-American-Muslim congress-critter Ilhan Omar.

Paraphrasing Pelosi, it seems that Omar doesn’t understand the words she uses and consequently can’t be held accountable for using them. Yup…just what we need on the Foreign Affairs Oversight Committee.

We applaud Speaker Pelosi and her Liberal/Progressive/Socialist/Communist legislators in the HOR. Their actions speak much louder than any words I can use. Voters notice little thinks like “hate”.

Most of this talk about Israel v Anti-Semitism looks like a distraction to me.

Not one word from the conservatives about the latest trade deficit number. Trump blew it up. Not an easy thing to do, but thanks to the strong dollar and tariffs, here we are. So much winning…

By the way, tariffs are anathema to capitalism. The US tariffs are being unilaterally imposed by Trump. The Legislature has no say in the process whatsoever, because Trump claimed they are a matter of national security. Sound familiar? You know, declaring an emergency in order to bypass the Legislative branch. I’m not sure how a trade deficit number in the stratosphere helps national security.

And because the tariffs are there at Trump’s whim, every time he hints there will be tariff increases, or tariffs will be lifted, the stock market moves several hundred points. It is a situation perfect for abuse, insider trading, and stock market manipulation. Just a word in the ear of a friend or two right before hinting tariffs could go up or down…

Nah. Trump would never do that. I mean, look at his reputation for honesty.

You can bet someone is playing that game.

The national debt increased $2 trillion due to the tax cuts and the spending increase for the military. The annual deficit has also ballooned since Trump took over from Obama. Last year it was $779 billion. This year it is projected to be $994 trillion.

Hey, how about those tax cuts!

We don’t need no fu*king wall.

None of the “anti-wall” pinheads can understand the numbers of illegals crossing our borders or reasons those numbers are growing dramatically.

Three Times the Illegal Immigration of 2017 Levels at Current Rate

“Crossings are now clearly at crisis levels, and the pressure will be on Democrats in Congress to tighten asylum laws if they intend to hold the House in 2020,” Kopits notes. “I would note that migrants are also certainly aware of this, and therefore apprehension numbers could rise substantially heading into the summer months as migrants rush to cross the border before new legislation can be prepared.”

RF,
Nothing about that article makes sense. First, I find it very hard to believe that potential migrants in Guatemala and El Salvador are watching Congressional legislation. They are NOT “certainly aware of this.” A person would have to be drop dead stupid to believe that for one second, but hey, we are talking Breitbart, a conduit for Russia propaganda during the 2016 campaign. Ok, back to this little gem: apprehensions “could rise substantially.” Oh really? Then again, apprehensions could NOT rise substantially. And how about this: “… pressure will be on Democrats in Congress to tighten asylum laws if they intend to hold the House in 2020.” Uh huh. Democrats just took control of the House by winning the popular vote by a landslide. Why on earth would they buy into all this crap about a crisis and the lies Trump constantly repeats about immigration?

What people will remember in 2020 will be the children in cages, and the thousands of families broken up by ICE as part of an inhuman, punitive policy. The Trump immigration policy has dishonored the US, profoundly dishonored this country and its heritage.

So, RF, are you ready to support the blatantly unconstitutional national emergency declaration by Trump? It is a clear cut violation of Article 1 of the Constitution, separation of powers. Doesn’t get much clearer than this one. The courts will shoot it down, but meanwhile the GOP will probably give away its legislative power to the executive branch in a move of abject cowardice.

On the plus side, this will be a perfect vehicle for declaring a national emergency about gun violence when a Democratic president takes office. What an easy way to bypass the Senate and the Constitution!

phx8’s appalling inability to read and comprehend is stunning.

“Princeton Policy Advisor Steven Kopits (not Breitbart) now projects that illegal border crossings for this calendar year will be more than three times what they were in 2017 and nearly double last year’s total crossings. The projection predicts there will be more than 840,000 illegal border crossings this year, though Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen (not Breitbart) predicts about 900,000 crossings.”

Are there any among us who believes “potential migrants in Guatemala and El Salvador” are not aware of the loopholes in our immigration laws and leave their homes just for an outing to get some exercise? I agree with phx8; “A person would have to be drop dead stupid to believe that for one second…”

Maybe I should play the same game. Make up an organization. Call myself the Portland Policy Advisors. Then just make up some sh*t. Let’s see. The illegal immigrants Donald Trump kept on his staff in NJ, and personally knew, were all members of MS-13, rapists, criminals, murderers, some really “tough hombres.” Pretending they were maids and housekeepers and gardeners was just a clever ruse. You know, typical illegal immigrants.

Sure. Why not.

phx8 hypocritically wrote: The national debt increased $2 trillion due to the tax cuts and the spending increase for the military.
Amazing how people like “open-borders” phx8 was most silent about the national debt when Obama almost doubled it from $11.9 Trillion to $19.5 Trillion (in 8 years). Also, most Democrats also voted for the increased military spending, so why does phx8 blame only Republicans?
phx8 hypocritically wrote: On the plus side, this will be a perfect vehicle for declaring a national emergency about gun violence when a Democratic president takes office.
Good luck with that. There are more weapons than the 328 Million people in the U.S., and the vast majority of them are not going to tolerate their 2nd amendment rights to be restricted, despite the numerous Democrats (i.e. hypocrites) who want to abolish or restrict 2nd Amendment rights, and say it is worth it “even if it saves only ONE life”, but conveniently ignore 2,000 homicides per year by criminal non-citizens.
phx8 wrote: So, RF, are you ready to support the blatantly unconstitutional national emergency declaration by Trump?
Nonsense.
There’s no proof that it is unconstitutional.
There IS a crisis at the border, whether Democrats are able to admit it, or not (due to Democrats despicable motives to pit U.S. citizens and illegal immigration against each other to acquire more votes, money, and power for THEIR party, while ignoring over 2,000 homicdes per year by criminal non-citizens).

There are prayer rugs in one corner of a local restaurant where Indian and Pakistani immigrants eat happily together, all very nice people, like Ilhan Omar, who has Jewish supporters. The “others” are the reich wing who seek to divide to frighten each other into support for persons who only regard them as pawns in a game that the globalist corporatists play. I have a neighbor who I try to avoid because he needs to repeat whatever he saw on “State TV” most recently. I got tired of trying to explain reality to him. Their stories are like soap operas, made up in a shake and bake bag, endlessly repetitive, and not worth the listen. In Scheissstorm Donald, they see themselves as they would like to be, endlessly butting into conversations with opinions that don’t even make any sense, but they feel they have made a contribution in some way because he’s there and they’re here. As a representative Omar and others on the foreign affairs committee should question why we give so much money to Israel. Is it influenced by lobbyists? AIPAC is a powerful lobbying group that does exert pressure on Congress, so it could be about the Benjamin’s. Yet because she mentions money and Israel together it is anti-semantic. How does she bring up the concern she has about influence peddling in Congress by AIPAC without being anti-semitic?

Let’s explain to j2t2 why we give money to Israel.

About 70 years ago some guy tried to kill all the Jews. He thought they were responsible for Germany’s economic situation. He put a lot of them in work camps and then stole everything from them including the gold fillings in their teeth and then burned their bodies. Whole families got wiped out.

After the world finally stopped this from happening… I should say after the U.S. and the U.S.S.R (allied with the U.S.) finally stopped this guy, the Jews decided as a collective body to never let it happen again and they formed their own state where they can defend themselves against anyone trying to do the same again.

Lots of people agreed with the Jews. They didn’t think they should be wiped off the face of the earth and helped them with their new state. We’re still helping them, because there are still people like Ahab who want to wipe Israel off the face of the earth.

That’s why we are giving money to Israel.

I have a question, j2t2. Why are we giving money to Mexico? Why are we giving money to Honduras and Guatemala and Puerto Rico? No one in recent history tried to exterminate them! Why are we supporting them?

If their population was so decimated, why did they place their homeland where they did?

There have been many proposals for a Jewish homeland throughout history. Why did they accept this one and turn down so many others?

Many thanks to j2t2 for giving us such a perfect example of hypocrisy, and being the gift that keeps on giving.

Perhaps j2t2 is an anti-semite too, since j2t2
is defending Ilhan Omar’s comments as “relatively benign”, and since j2t2 already has a history of making numerous nasty, racist, and hateful comments (which j2t2 already clamis to be very “proud” of).
