SOTU - Not a Home Run but Plenty of Hits

Was it:

  • A tale of Two Trumps as John Bennett in Roll Call suggests? That is, unifying on some of the issues that might provide a way for Democrats to work with Republicans on things like maternity leave, drug prices, and infrastructure? And divisive because he took a hard line on immigration and abortion?
  • A home run as National Review’s Jim Geraghty suggests? Although Geraghty cheekily points out 3 areas where he felt that the SOTU Address struck out - The Kim Jong Un summit, the negotiations with the Taliban, and the Economic Miracle that only the president can claim credit for - which sort of means Geraghty is saying Trump swung really nice but a shame about the 3 misses.
  • An eerie echo of Nixon’s 1974 State of the Union Address where he called for an end to the Watergate investigations, as James Hohmann suggests in his Daily 202 newsletter?

To expect Trump not to be tough on immigration after the shutdown is a little ridiculous given the political capital the president has spent on that shutdown and may yet spend on another shutdown in a little over a week.

I'll assume that Geraghty considered the SOTU Address solid, especially for its defense of the unborn which provided the GOP with a chance to show the Democrats stone-faced in anger and silent in the people's House, when given a chance to respond. All live, in front of the nation. And the white suits were a truly odd touch that somehow made those women look like members of some strange cult.

I could go on at this point about how they are like members of a cult, a post-modern return to paganism, one that explicitly rejects Judeo-Christian charity and what has been our deeply ingrained care for the young. But you'd be better off reading Georgi Boorman's excellent essay in The Federalist on that matter, should you care to. And of course, that cult runs far beyond some women in Washington making a symbolic point about female empowerment. It stretches from UN offices to European governments promoting abortion and euthanasia, to ancient Greek philosophers, to Christian ministers proclaiming the (sacred?) right to abortion, to males around this planet unwilling to understand their responsibilities and to man up and be a dependable partner. That means - at least at some point in our lives - many if not most of us males everywhere, unfortunately.

But a Home Run? See below.

A Nixon-like SOTU? Give me a break Hohmann. Unless Mueller has real evidence, the comparison with Watergate-era Washington is just another example of the Washington Post's all-in partisan editorial policy on impeachment. And Hohmann knows full well who pays his rent.

So, I'll go with Byron York's assessment in The Washington Examiner. This was a long, detailed defense of his administration's policies, including immigration, but a State of the Union Address does not have much lasting impact, especially given the Trump news cycle, which is its own brand of hyperkinetic.

Will it move the needle on immigration? Will people be more supportive of appropriating $5.7 billion to build and/or upgrade a couple of hundred miles of barriers on the Southern Border as a result of the words President Trump spoke in the House of Representatives? Too soon to tell, but Congress and the President will have to choose in a very short time.

And finally, what York suggests is that Trump made the right decision to deliver the speech in the House of Representatives, rather than sending a written report or in some other way breaking with a century's worth of tradition as well as Washington's much earlier example. He accepted the separation of powers - yes, it's Nancy's House, for now at least - and delivered a hard-hitting speech (although it would have helped if he had paused between the end of one sentence and the beginning of another, rather than in the middle of a sentence, but that's me being fussy).

Well done Mr. President. Hope it works.

“And divisive because he took a hard line on immigration and abortion?”

Keeley, I heard this same nonsense from many Liberal talking heads.

Since when is opposing breaking our nations’ laws “hard line”?

Since when is killing babies “hard line”?

“the white suits were a truly odd touch that somehow made those women look like members of some strange cult”

Agree Keeley. My wife remarked that they looked like TV’s “Mr. Clean’s” rejects.

“An eerie echo of Nixon’s 1974 State of the Union Address where he called for an end to the Watergate investigations”

Most likely, the only reason Nancy Pelosi allowed the traitor to enter the USHOR was because she knew the response by Stacy Abrams would be better than anything the crime syndicate boss could deliver. He wants publicity, but he has already been revealed enough. “His” party looked absolutely insane jumping up and applauding like an audience in north korea. Putain must really have something on all of them. The presence of so many unconvicted criminals among them was disgusting. Rapist Brat Kava Nought was there, pretending not to be who he is. The references to the holocaust were disgusting considering his kidnappings and incarcerations in what are now becoming “work camps” just like in that other country, not to mention the deaths of innocent kidnapped children.

Interestingly, with what was happening in the 1930s, Elgar wanted the lyrics to Land Of Hope And Glory changed.

The Washington Examiner is is owned by MediaDC, a subsidiary of Clarity Media Group, which is owned by Philip Anschutz, who is also the owner of “Supreme” Neal Gorsuch.

(wiki)In January 2019, The Washington Examiner published a story with the headline, “Border rancher: ‘We’ve found prayer rugs out here. It’s unreal’.” Shortly after, President Trump cited the story as justification for a border wall amid the 2018-2019 federal government shutdown. The story in question cited one anonymous rancher who offered no evidence of these Muslim prayer rugs, such as photos. The story provided no elaboration on how the rancher knew the rugs in question were Muslim prayer rugs. The author of the story formerly worked as press secretary for the anti-immigrant group Federation for American Immigration Reform. Stories of Muslim prayer rugs at the border are urban myths that have frequently popped up since at least 2005, but with no evidence to substantiate the claims. The Examiner never released a clarification or retracted the story.

Along the same lines of what Trump said at the SOTU, illegal immigration may not mean like a big deal to most politicians, who live in their homes with walls, security systems, armed body guards, etc.
Perhaps they would feel differently if one of their own children, or a family member was one of the 2,000 homicides per year by criminal non-citizens, or one of the victims of millions of crimes per year.
Unfortunately, many politicians (mostly Democrats) have been despicably pitting U.S. citizens and non-citizens against each other for 30+ years, for votes, money, cheap labor, and profits.

Ed O’hrealy wrote (.i.e. more garbage): “An eerie echo of Nixon’s 1974 State of the Union Address where he called for an end to the Watergate investigations”.
Nonsense. Trump did not mention the Mueller investigation, despite it being a partisan witch hunt.
What should be investigated is all of this.
Ed O’hrealy wrote (i.e. more nonsense): Most likely, the only reason Nancy Pelosi allowed the traitor to enter the USHOR was because she knew the response by Stacy Abrams would be better than anything the crime syndicate boss could deliver.
Stacet Abrams is a joke and another socialist extremist, who said illegal immigrants should be able to vote in U.S. elections. That doesn’t bother Ed O’hrealy, j2t2, or “open-borders” phx8.
Ed O’hrealy wrote (more nonsense): “His” [Trump’s] party looked absolutely insane jumping up and applauding like an audience in north korea.
Is that why CNN was trying to discount their own polls that gave 70% approval rating for Trump’s SOTU speech? (source: www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNy_e4FkSRw )
What planet is Ed O’hrealy getting his news from ?
Ed O’hrealy wrote (more wishful thinking): Putain must really have something on all of them.
More wishful thinking.
This will be Ed O’hrealy, j2t2, and phx8 when Mueller’s investigation proves nothing against Trump.
Ed O’hrealy wrote (more hate speech): The presence of so many unconvicted criminals among them was disgusting. Rapist Brat Kava Nought [S.C.J. Bret Kavanaugh] was there, pretending not to be who he is.
Typical “Guilty until proven innocent” (unless you’re a Demcrat, of course).
Ed O’hrealy wrote (more utter nonsense): The references to the holocaust were disgusting considering his [Trump’s] kidnappings and incarcerations in what are now becoming “work camps” just like in that other country, not to mention the deaths of innocent kidnapped children.
HHMmmmmm … according to Ed O’hrealy, So, Trump has slaves?
That’s strong evidence that Ed O’hrealy really is certifiable.
Ed O’hrealy wrote (more incoherent garbage): Interestingly, with what was happening in the 1930s, Elgar wanted the lyrics to Land Of Hope And Glory changed.
Yep. That song is the National Anthem of England.
Yep, Ed O’hreally really is definitely certifiable.

Border ranchers in Lordsburg, NM reported finding prayer rugs on their properties.
That was reported by Anna Giaritelli on January 16, 2019 07:32 AM, and updated on Jan 16, 2019, 03:51 PM.
The border rancher that reported it is a woman, and her picture (silouhette) is on this article.
The rancher wants to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation by cartels (who are engaged in the human trafficking).
Here is the story: www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/border-rancher-weve-found-prayer-rugs-out-here-its-unreal

Ed O’hrealy and j2t2 both tried to discredit this rancher and journalist’s; essentially claiming it is a lie.
Why is that so hard to believe, with many thousands crossing the border every day?
And I have seen people bring their prayer rugs to the office.
Why does anyone think there are not people from ALL over the world trying to cross the Mexico/U.S. border?
GAO reports prove that there are illegal immigrants from ALL over the world (i.e. from Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Asia, Africa, S.Korea, China, Ghana, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.
While the rancher wanted to remain anonymous, the journalist (Anna Giaritelli) did not.

The truth is, socialist extremists like certified Ed O’hrealy, cussing j2t2, and open-borders phx8 have an agenda.
They patrol all of the socialist extremist web-sites looking for talking points, and care nothing about the truth.

This is only one of many times Ed O’hrealy’s (i.e. really certifiable), cursin’ j2t2’s, and open-borders phx8’s lies and FAKE NEWs have been refuted.

So, after blogging here since 2006 (13+ years), how many people have Ed O’hrealy, j2t2, and phx8 converted to their socialist, extremist (demented) way of thinking?

Wow and agenda! Oh man what now, an agenda and they have it!A plan, a political plan on a politicl website, what next? Unlike the fascist/conservative/oligarchy/populist nationalist/authoritarian/neo-Nazi’s here on WB. No agenda…right D.? Not you…all the repetition of the Big Lie but no agenda!Probably to busy cheering Trump on for taking babies and children away from their families.

They patrol all of the socialist extremist web-sites looking for talking points, and care nothing about the truth.

Oh please and the fascist/conservative/oligarchy/populist nationalist/authoritarian/neo-Nazi’s here on WB wouldn’t recognize the truth if it hit them on the head. He** they believe the guy who lies on average 10 times a day. They believe Trump! The many conservative propagandist websites aren’t here because you guys don’t support them D.. All this projection from you is silly. You remind me of Sen. McCarthy of Wisc.

Umm…..D., Whilst a legend in your own mind you need to come down to earth and realize repeating portions of the Big Lie over and over doesn’t refute anything. Just as you diverted here by claiming Trump didn’t mention the Mueller investigation you didn’t refute anything. Trump did mention ending investigations in his SOTU speech as Ohrealy said. Fake News has been used by fascist/conservative/oligarchy/populist nationalist/authoritarian/neo-Nazi’s as a means to discredit and demean their political opponents. Usually it is truth and facts that they seek to discredit.

So, after blogging here since 2006 (13+ years), how many people have Ed O’hrealy, j2t2, and phx8 converted to their socialist, extremist (demented) way of thinking?

About as many as converted to your fascist/conservative/oligarchy/populist nationalist/authoritarian/neo-Nazi way of thinking.

Well done Mr. President. Hope it works.

It is working. Trump is blaming the ills of America on illegal immigrants. Kinda like Hitler blamed the problems of Germany on the Jews.

Meanwhile Trump and the repubs passed a “tax reform” law by telling us the rich would pay more and the middle class would benefit. And that was just a lie. The middle class is taking it in the shorts this year as the Trump tax fraud is revealed.

Trump ran on being a populist president that was going to bring and keep good paying jobs here in the US. Of course that was just a lie. So instead we get a fearmongering faux crisis at the southern border. Trump sheeple like D. bray constantly about the dangers to deflect from real issues.

The SOTU was no difference. Braying about investigations while his campaign staff is in jail or going to jail!

Perhaps the title to this thread should be modified to reflect the many members of the Congress nationalist caucus who kept shouting like they were at a KKK rally. I suggest “Not a home run but plenty of twits”. I mean the speech was better than we have come to expect from Trump. It must have been at least a 10th grade level, which for Trump is a major improvement. But “a lot of hits” seems to be exaggerated. The repubs produced quite a few twits, just look at Pence in the background.

She looked sort of doddering; forgetting to sit down; one hand still raised; sorting through what looked like menus; making strange faces (i.e. sucking on her false teeth?), clapping practically in Trump’s face; appearing as if she was not sure she should stand or clap or remain seated, etc. I’m not sure she is doddering and/or trying to be rude. She was trying to right the ship of fools,

Or maybe she is allergic to the spin and lies from the Trump speech and what you were seeing was a reaction to BS from Trump.

Trump extended bipartisan overtones throughout his speech.

Perhaps his past history of lying caught up with him and no one believed him.

At times I was sure he was offering Democratics exactly what they wanted. He wants to work with them, but Democratics will have none of it.

Perhaps the dems are waiting to hear from Putin, to make sure Trump has permission to work with the dems.

From day one they have been determined to undermine Trump and refuse to give him any credit for any thing.

That’s what he gets when he tells us he is putting the opposition in jail. I mean seriously Weary has Trump done anything, other than lie, that would cause you to think he is being honest?

Their obstinant stance is going to come back to bite them on the butt.

If they give in to Trumps lies then they will pay the price with those that vote dem, Weary. His tax reform was a lie, he wants to gut SS and Medicare/Medicaid. F**k Trump. He allows corporations to dump their poisons in the water and to pollute the air. F**k Trump. And f**k any dem that sides with him on his agenda. But that’s just my opinion.

Imagine how long Democratics have been getting away with this type of behavior!

Not as long as the repubs have Weary. Remember Garland? Remember the scum bag from SC that called Obama a liar at the SOTU back in 2010 or so?

You guys sure get pi**y when Putins bitch gets no respect but lets face it Trump hasn’t earned any respect. • Democrats consider the following to be voter suppression:

    • (1) must show some form of ID (to prove eligibility to vote, and to prevent voting more than once);
    • (2) must be alive (i.e. not deceased);
    • (3) must not vote more than once per election;
    • (4) must be U.S. Citizen

This report verifies voter fraud by 81% of Democrats, and 19% of Republicans (from Heritage.org voter fraud database (1979 to present): heritage.org/voterfraud).

HHMMmmmm … none of them were found to be Russians.
However, IF you always thought most voter fraud was by Democrats, you are correct.
This report is ample proof that most voter fraud is by Democrats.
There was only one case of voter suppresison by a Democrat, against 200 Republican voters.

Here’s evidence of illegal immigrants voting in U.S. elections, and other voter fraud.
Stacey Abrams (who gave the Democrat response to the SOTU in FEB-2019) stated in a PBS interview on 11-JAN-2019 that she “would not oppose” allowing non-citizens to vote in elections, and that she is also open to minors voting too. A year-long investigation (2018-to-2018) involving the Texas Department of Public Safety revealed that 95,000 non-citizens are registered to vote in Texas, and that 58,000 non-citizens voted in one or more elections in Texas.

None of these issues are going to be solved by divided government. For this reason I agree with the Emergency being declared and a wall built, even if it has to be guarded razor wire. Illegal immigration needs to be stopped at the southern border, as well as all other borders.

The states had determined their own immigration needs up to the late 19th century. Since then the federal laws have changed and in 1980 the UN became involved.

The situation with people voting; I’m going to insist it’s a state issue that has to be conducted by the state using federal guidelines, with one prerequisite, the 17th amendment must be repealed first.

The people can’t govern both houses. It is fundamentally wrong. The state government must be included in the checks and balances established in the original constitution. Having the people determine both houses has resulted in both houses being ruled by emotion. The states need to run the administration of the federal government, not the people. That’s why it’s a republic, and that’s why a republic form of government is a prerequisite to joining the union.

Our Liberal Pals are in mourning today as this announcement was made. For nearly two years our Pals have regaled us with stories of false hope and outright lying. Today, the shit hit the Liberal fan and phx8, j2t2 and other Libbies forgot to duck.

“The Senate Intelligence Committee has found no direct evidence of collusion between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia after a two-year investigation.

Even the Democrat investigators have said “they do not contest Republican Committee Chairman Richard Burr over his recent statements that ‘we don’t have anything that would suggest there was collusion.’”

Oh brother I was wondering when one of you guys would get around to this lie. Of course Royal did and he claims “A year-long investigation (2018-to-2018) involving the Texas Department of Public Safety revealed that 95,000 non-citizens are registered to vote in Texas, and that 58,000 non-citizens voted in one or more elections in Texas.”

But do they have proof for these “findings”? Have 58k people been charged with voter fraud? Or is this just another Kobach/ALEC voter purge attempt, this time by Paxton in Texas? Royal you do realize this same tactic has been used by repub attempting to suppress the vote in many different states and so far it has turned out to be nothing.

We know Paxton is a extreme right wing ideologue that will do anything to stay in power, including suppressing the vote. But the most telling is the tweet from our idiot president trying to sell this crap as if it were true. If the president says it more than likely it is a lie. Just like all the other times.

“Indeed, with a few days, the Texas Tribune reported, the Texas secretary of state’s office was informing counties that “some of those voters” — a “substantial number” in some cases — didn’t belong on the lists it sent out:”

j2t2 seems to say that if one of the folks who are on the list is genuine then they all must be genuine.

You’d think it was the responsibility of the new citizen to register to vote as he became a citizen, however the entire article is saying that they were already registered to vote before they became citizens and didn’t change their status. What’s up with that, j2t2?

And, the article did say there were non-citizens registered to vote and non-citizens who have voted. That’s called voter fraud, j2t2.

Weary, You act so innocent, so naive. You act as if this is the first time some repub in state government has tried to suppress the vote. This is just another state doing the bidding of ALEC/Kobach et al. The intent of these announcements is to scare the citizens of the state into believing there is widespread voter fraud.
There isn’t. This is by the book voter suppression. Look at the track record of these guys, read up on it a bit Weary. Use the same nit picking skills you used on my last comment and you will know this is voter suppression.

j2t2, please don’t attribute comments (437964) that are not mine to me.

It is a bright new day with birds singing and no braying from our donkey Liberal friends about Russian collusion with the Trump campaign. They have taken a terrible blow to their truthfulness and it will be some time before they recover…if ever.
