The Days of Rage & Shouting Will Someday End

On September 11, 2001 Peter Davidson was about 6 weeks shy of his 8th birthday with a mother who still works as a nurse and a father who was a firefighter. They, of course, were - and still are - New Yorkers.

Dan Crenshaw was 17 and half years old and likely starting his last year of high school before going on to Tufts University, having grown up in Texas as well as South America.

Like my father, Crenshaw's dad worked in the oil industry which led him to South America. It was the other way around with my dad who arrived on a corvette that had been sold to the Venezuelan navy and who was glad to have a job training warrant officers on how to run the engine room, before stumbling into a job in the oil industry down there. Like Crenshaw I was raised for a good part of my childhood in South America.

Unlike Crenshaw the closest I have been to battle was final cadet inspection at my boarding school. I'm a coward, like most people. And serving in the military never occurred to me.

I haven't the slightest idea of what it's like when an IED goes off. What the sound does to you, what the shock of the impact of the blast does to you. Whether you fade out of consciousness. How long it is before you can start moving again or before someone grabs you and gets you the hell out of there.

My father was 88 when he passed away and I was already into middle age. I haven't the slightest idea what it's like for a 7-year old looking up at the towers crumbling from his city's skyline and not knowing that his daddy was in those towers. Or how he was told, how his mother told him his father would not be coming home and what it took for him to understand.

But Dan Crenshaw sure as f!cking hell does.

He understands both stories. His and Pete Davidson's. And therefore, he grasps something at the core of America, of the ties that still bind in spite of all the anger and division. And his graceful and funny appearance on SNL should act as a turning point in how we treat each other. And how we should never forget but always try to forgive, if we somehow can.

It may not of course.

But maybe enough people will have been shifted just enough in their attitudes to back away from a cultural war that at times, in our worst fears, seems to threaten to become a low-grade civil war.

So, in the spirit of Dan Crenshaw, rather than analyzing how Adam Schiff will launch investigations against the administration, I'm thinking of the good people in California and hope and pray for their safety and for a little rain. And for those grieving their lost ones. And in the spirit of Dan Crenshaw I think that a reasoned debate about the how's and why's of wildfires/drought/erosion is needed and welcome. And that means understanding both that drought has always been part of California's landscape but that clearly, we're impacting the climate with our behavior.

Does that sound like a nothing-burger moderate position that needs to be shouted off the stage?

Sorry if you feel that way. But the days of rage and shouting at some point will begin to fade. And we can then do the harder work of living together and solving problems together.

I agree that the Tramp should cut out his callous fascist sexist racist rage and shouting or serve two years in the tanning bed.

The issues between Crenshaw and Davidson are already settled. Thanks for old news from Saturday.

The forecast for the entire western half of the United States is hotter and dryer. There was a major fire in the panhandle area of OK/TX/KS also.

“I think that a reasoned debate about the how’s and why’s of wildfires/drought/erosion is needed and welcome.”

Sorry to disagree Keeley. We already know the “how’s and why’s”. I learned them over forty years ago obtaining my degree in natural resource management and forestry.

We have people with no formal education in “climate” and forestry who are convinced they know the science behind both by simply reading a few slanted articles or listening to some charlatan with a devious motive.

Unlike the comment above, I really appreciate having WatchBlog available, with no ads, and no subscription. I value the opportunity to express my ideas on WB.

Keeley, I commented in the middle column that the wounded warrior should not have given acknowledgement to Crenshaw. The MSM will go far off the rails to gain attention. Silence would have been golden in that situation.

Likewise, I wish the President would have kept quiet re CMM
s arsehole reporter. CNN will go far off the rails to gain attention. Silence would have been golden in that situation.

Now, CNN is suing to keep their name in the news. I hope Trump allows CNN 1 question for every 40 he accepts from the other reporters.

Tramp is already giving up on the presidency. He’ll be gone soon. Pence is going to be filling in for him at international meetings.

After ducking out on national service in Germany, Tramp’s granddad went to America (Canada) and make money, then to the US, but went back to Germany, where he was deported:

Friedrich Tr-mp, to Prince Luitpold of Bavaria:

Most Serene, Most Powerful Prince Regent! Most Gracious Regent and Lord!

I was born in Kallstadt on March 14, 1869. My parents were honest, plain, pious vineyard workers. They strictly held me to everything good — to diligence and piety, to regular attendance in school and church, to absolute obedience toward the high authority.

After my confirmation, in 1882, I apprenticed to become a barber. I emigrated in 1885, in my sixteenth year. In America I carried on my business with diligence, discretion, and prudence. God’s blessing was with me, and I became rich. I obtained American citizenship in 1892. In 1902 I met my current wife. Sadly, she could not tolerate the climate in New York, and I went with my dear family back to Kallstadt.

The town was glad to have received a capable and productive citizen. My old mother was happy to see her son, her dear daughter-in-law, and her granddaughter around her; she knows now that I will take care of her in her old age.

But we were confronted all at once, as if by a lightning strike from fair skies, with the news that the High Royal State Ministry had decided that we must leave our residence in the Kingdom of Bavaria. We were paralyzed with fright; our happy family life was tarnished. My wife has been overcome by anxiety, and my lovely child has become sick.

Why should we be deported? This is very, very hard for a family. What will our fellow citizens think if honest subjects are faced with such a decree — not to mention the great material losses it would incur. I would like to become a Bavarian citizen again.

In this urgent situation I have no other recourse than to turn to our adored, noble, wise, and just sovereign lord, our exalted ruler His Royal Highness, highest of all, who has already dried so many tears, who has ruled so beneficially and justly and wisely and softly and is warmly and deeply loved, with the most humble request that the highest of all will himself in mercy deign to allow the applicant to stay in the most gracious Kingdom of Bavaria.

Your most humble and obedient,

Friedrich Tr-mp

“The American citizen and pensioner Friedrich Tr-mp, currently residing in Kallstadt, is hereby informed that he is to depart the state of Bavaria, or face deportation.”
