I Blame Durbin - Seriously

There is a good chance that Trump called some countries shtholes. We all know that he was not entirely wrong, but he was entirely rude. However, it was a small private gathering, where they were trying to work out a DACA deal. Durbin would have known well that making a public spectacle of the private rudeness would destroy chances for a DACA deal. That was probably his goal. It is more advantageous for Democrats to have the issue than the solution.

Trump is a turd. I don't like him and feel that there has never been a less diplomatic president. But you don't have to like somebody to make a deal. Durbin could not have been that outraged that he could not let it go. He wanted to mess up the deal. He wanted to screw Trump and make the DACA kids collateral damage.

President Trump is a racist and a bigot. I based my opinion not by the recent comments by him, but by the comments he made during the primaries. I don’t know him, so I only have his words to judge him by. I think that is fair, history has shown that people tend to broadcast who they are by their words.

It is not catastrophic that we have a racist President, but due to his words, any and all policies he proposes will be judged via the prism of his racism. The sad thing is: he evidently knows that a portion of his core followers will support him more, because of his comments. The rest of his core will believe the distortion of the truth he and others put forth in his defense. This does little of course, to unite the majority of Americans who are not part of his core supporters.

I suspect similar to George W. Bush, Trump’s popularity will diminish towards the end of his term as President until even his core will abandon him. He has three more years, so things may change, but I see little chance of that.

To your comment C&J, perhaps Durbin was negotiating, by bringing out to the light of day, Trump’s position. By putting forth his comments, Trump is now painted into a corner.

To comment on your previous post, you are correct that in bringing in the people willing to seek a better life in a foreign land, is the fiber that founded our Nation since the days of the Puritans.

So let me get this straight C&J, our elected representatives had a “private” meeting to discuss public business. While the meeting may have been behind closed doors that doesn’t mean it the conversation was “private”. The press has been reporting on these “private” meetings for decades.

In fact usually the press is aware of these so called “private” meetings and ask those elected representatives in attendance to discuss the meeting afterwards. So I would suggest the basic premise you are hanging your hat on is flawed.

To suggest it is Durbins’ fault for responding truthfully to reporters or whoever asking about how the meeting went is just passing the buck C&J. Just as blaming Durbin and the dems for the negotiations going bad. They were negotiating with someone who was clueless on the issue and demonstrated such with his willfully ignorant comment.

I take it that Christine & John would rather have unfettered immigration with illegals cutting the line. He doesn’t care if the first job illegal immigrants get is applying for welfare and food stamps, because they’re unable to function in this society. That it’s more important to collect quotas from arbitrary countries instead of selection people who can produce and assimilate? Am I correct in this assumption?

It won’t be much longer before the explosive news about the Steele Dossier being part of the basis for obtaining a FISA warrant to wiretap folks in the Trump campaign breaks with a loud crescendo of falling Democrat operatives.

Unless the FISA judge was a crony of the Obama administration, and the Hillary campaign camp, I would speculate the judge will insist on criminal warrants for lying under oath as to the veracity of the documents provided.

It will be a huge “I told you so” moment for Conservative talk show hosts who were instrumental in fleshing out this expose.

C&J,
You are fundamentally wrong about why that meeting went south. Durbin and Graham worked months on compromise immigration, and they already had buy-in from many Senators. They thought they were meeting with Trump to push that legislation forward.

Much to their surprise, they found themselves in a room with a lot of immigration hard-liners who had no intention whatsoever of compromising, including Senators Cotton & Perdue, former head of HHS and now CoS Kelly, and most notably, Stephen Miller, a rabidly anti-immigrant aide. These are people who want to end DACA and deport Dreamers. Durbin & Graham realized their effort was going to be shot down in flames.

The meeting blew up. I suspect a lot of things were said that did not make the news, but the crassness of Trump’s comments was enough to make SoS Tillerson’s life a living nightmare.

Recently AG Sessions cited the Immigration Act of 1924 as a model because many of the people in this administration do not just want to limit immigration; like Sessions, they want it stopped entirely. The Act of 1924 ended open borders. It was fueled by racism based upon eugenics:

“Proponents of the Act sought to establish a distinct American identity by favoring native-born Americans over Jews, Southern Europeans, and Eastern Europeans in order to “maintain the racial preponderance of the basic strain on our people and thereby to stabilize the ethnic composition of the population”.
Immigration Act of 1924, Wikipedia

In addition to limiting Jews, Southern Europeans (Italians) and Eastern Europeans, the Act prohibited immigration by people from the Far East:

“The nationalities barred were in the “Asia–Pacific Triangle”, which included Japan, China, the Philippines (then under U.S. control), Siam (Thailand), French Indochina (Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia), Singapore (then a British colony), Korea, the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), Burma (Myanmar), British India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and Malaya (mainland part of Malaysia).”

But as immigration proponents like myself argue, the United States is not a race. It is an idea. This is the place where people with the willingness to take chance and seek opportunity can come, and that spirit is worth far more than any other attribute.

Thanks for the “selective” quotes from Wikipedia on the Immigration Act of 1924 phx8.

Here’s is the essence of the act; also from Wikipedia.

“Congressional opposition was minimal. According to Columbia University historian Mae Ngai, the 1924 Act put an end to a period where the United States essentially had open borders.”

It is interesting that today’s Liberal Democrats want to return to “open borders”.

I am a proponent of legal immigration. The idea is to invite people to become citizens of our great country by virtue of what they can contribute to our great democratic experiment.

To use an expression of President Obama…We want those we invite to be “shovel ready” to embrace the traditional American values and become valued citizens who contribute; not take, from our culture and economy.

I agree with phx8 when he says the United States of America is an idea, not a race. However, his words ring hollow when he supports identity politics and immigration quotas from predetermined countries.

Perhaps that is why the meeting went south. Perhaps they were lying about believing in one thing, but practicing another like phx8 is doing in his last comment.

Acting like a four year old and running off to the media to tattle on Trump for saying a naughty word is poor diplomacy. However, I believe Durbin is a liar based on past performances by himself and Dirty Harry Reid.

Personally I do not support immigration quotas, and recognizing identity politics does not necessarily mean I support it. Groups form coalitions based on common needs for their slice of the population. The problem comes with goals.

What we are seeing today is not new to American politics. There have been waves of racism and anti-immigration sentiment in the past. The premature end of Reconstruction soon saw the same kind of racism take aim at Chinese with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Another wave of racism and anti-immigration fever resulted in the 1924 legislation.

We see it today with Trump. From what I can see, it is the only thing he really cares about.

Can anyone explain why, with the GOP holding the White House, Senate, and House, the Democrats should be blamed for shutting down the government? I don’t get it. We’re not even talking about a filibuster. How does that work?

RF,
Yes, Wilson was a racist, reflecting his southern heritage. But if we want to include LBJ, who passed the Civil Rights Act, then we should look at some of the even more recent presidents. Richard Nixon and his Southern Strategy was horrible, but then again, when it came to morals, there was little about Republican Richard Nixon that was not horrible. And let’s not forget Little Ronnie! Remember all those references to ‘states rights’? Do some research on Reconstruction after the Civil War. Or the way he opened his presidential campaign in Philadelphia, MS? Does that town ring a bell? Hint: the town has ONLY one claim to fame; that was where racists killed several civil rights activists. So when it comes to racists, Reagan was the worst in recent memory, but Trump blew the doors off. There has not been anyone so overtly racist since Andrew Johnson.

Can anyone explain why, with the GOP holding the White House, Senate, and House, the Democrats should be blamed for shutting down the government?

(facepalm)!

Are you kidding me? Sorry phx8, the days of blaming Republicnas for government shutdowns as a matter of course are over.

Democratics should take their own advice.

Elections have consequences.

Remember that? Remember when that phrase was used to put Republicans in their place?

As I recall Carter had 5 government shutdowns, all with Democratic control of the senate and house. I don’t remember the pearl clutching then. I didn’t hear about Democratics getting the “blame”. Is it because the media’s focus on government shutdowns are political stunts used exclusively on Republicans as a bludgeon, a reason to sic the media on Republicans standing in the way of Democratics getting what they want?

You have to be all sorts of ignorant to ask that question, phx8. Elections have consequences. It’s the Democratics turn to get dumped on. If they withhold votes to stymie Republican progress in the Senate they should be blamed. If you’re playing obstructionist, prepare to get treated like an obstructionist.

“The notoriety of the “Klanbake” convention and the violence it produced cast a lasting shadow over the Democratic Party’s prospects in the 1924 election and contributed to their defeat by incumbent Republican President Calvin Coolidge.”

KAP,
“Phx8, 60 votes in the Senate are needed.”

No. A clean CR only requires a Republican majority. The GOP can keep the government going without a single Democratic vote. Not even one.

WW,
“So phx8, “states rights”, as defined in our Constitution, and promoted by President Reagan is racists?”

Yes. The state right they were referring to was slavery, and Reagan chose Philadelphia MS for a reason.

Earlier I asked the following:

“Can anyone explain why, with the GOP holding the White House, Senate, and House, the Democrats should be blamed for shutting down the government?”

I’m still waiting for an explanation. Once again, the GOP can keep the government open without a single Democratic vote. Not even one.

Try again.

RF,
“Liberals believe they can erase our country’s history of racism by taking down statues of Confederate War heros. However, they will never erase the stain of their history in support of racism.”

The Democrats of a century ago deserve condemnation for their racism, just as the GOP does today.

If you consistently treat similar behaviors differently only because of race, you are racist. If you do not, you are not.

I doubt Trump is a racist. He is just crude.

The racist label is getting out of hand. I think it is on its last legs, however. There was a time not long ago when the racist label evoked strong guilt among whites. It does no longer. (I never felt guilt, BTW, but I was exceptional).

Shelby Steel had an article in WSJ. link text where he wrote about the kneeling football players. In the recent past, they would have evoked a lot of white guilt. These days, many just saw bunch of fat cats trying to signal virtue.

Trump is certainly an imperfect messenger and I do not like his public style. I have written on this may times. But I do like the way he flummoxes the PC crowd.

Calling a country a shthole in a private meeting is not a big deal. In fact, he was not wrong. That is why people want to leave those places.

When I served in Iraq, people used to ask me if I thought what I was doing would make the country great. I would tell them that it was a shthole a generation ago and it would be one a generation hence, but we could maybe make it a less dangerous shthole.

I know that all of us here have used some sort of colorful language like that. If you say you have not, you are either a liar or a wimp & weenie and probably a shthead.

I personally like the fact that Trump talks like the average guy, and says what he means. If people are offended, so be it. Americans have become far too thin skinned, and are offended at the drop of hat.

IMO the dreamers would be given a path to legal status, and that most Americans would support this If the other things necessary to end the majority of illegal immigration were implemented. A physical barrier at the border where it would have the greatest effect, an end to chain migration with a merit based system replacing it, interior enforcement, and mandatory e-verify for employers with stiff penalties, and mandatory jail time for employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens. There is no need to carry out mass deportations because without the ability to get a job, they will leave on their own. This won’t happen because democrats see these people as their key to electoral victory in the future. I do like the fact that the administration appears to be enforcing the laws. I also would like to see criminal charges brought against those who intentionally violate federal immigration laws.

So I’m a bit confused what with the latest Trump attack on the 1st amendment being so foolish. I thought when Trump told us he was a stable genius that he meant he was extremely intelligent and sane. But after this “fake news” award I wonder if he meant his only real skill was cleaning horse stalls.

IMHO I think that Trump who seems to be continuing the assault on press freedom that was started by Stalin and then Hitler that we rethink what we call this guy. I suggest we call him Adolph Stalin Trump instead of the Donald or tRump or any other name. What do you guys think.

I also have been thinking about starting a side business helping former Trump followers get back to reality. They need to see how damaging this assault on our democracy really is. I’m thinking of selling little hand held devices that are used to help the elderly when they have fallen and can’t get up. Instead of connecting them to an ambulance service I will connect then to the “MoreRons” help line. I was thinking of making them a two way device to help the most ardent of Trump followers realize what they are doing.

Those staffing the MoreRons help line could buzz the follower, or vice-versa, when things like this assault on the press happen. Or when A.S. Trump makes such foolish comments as why do we want people from shthole countries to come here. Then denies it. I would think the bells would go off in some of the heads of these conservative followers of Adolph Stalin Trump. But what can they do , turn to Faux news! No push the “I am a MoreRons” button and get the counseling they need.

Anyway it is sad to see our very own Adolph Stalin Trump crashing and burning into the sea of Authoritarianism. But it isn’t a one man show as he has help from the tea baggers in Congress and the repub establishment he speaks so poorly of.

I disagree with your definition of racism. Racism is a state of mind, however we can only judge one as a racist through their words and actions. An infrequent racist act is still racism, it is just harder to detect.

With or without your definition, Trump is still a racist. He may think his “exceptionalism” may exclude him from this definition, but it doesn’t. He has too much history that shows otherwise, such as his actions as a landlord.

Think about it, Cubed. The Democratics have been teaching racism, by your definition, for many years now.

You say exceptionalism is racist by way of a frame of mind. Anyone who is proud of themselves is a racist. Anyone who is told to feel good about themselves is, by default, a racist because they exclude everyone else from that feeling. Everyone else includes the African-American, Jewish-American, Male, Female, It, Gay, Lesbian, oh hell, I could go on and on and still exclude someone.

So by your definition, teaching children to feel good about themselves is teaching racism and bigotry.

KAP you choose to believe Trump over the media, that is your first problem. 5 misleading or lying remarks a day on average and you still believe him. You then have to think the press doing their jobs is “lying” about Trump. Give me a bunch of BS on what I believe. I take it then you would let the media and others tell all kinds of falsehoods about you and your family and you would sit and take it. SMH.

EVERYONE! PLEASE LISTEN! J2T2 WILL LIST THE 5 MISLEADING OR LYING REMARKS FOR TODAY, Jan. 18, 2018!

Let me start, Weary, with the definition of “on average”, which you seem to have overlooked.”The usual amount of something”. Which of course means some days less and some days more, but on average 5 times a day.

Now I think a couple of things need to be said Weary.
First of all you posted at 1:03 then asked if I was giving up at 1:25am. Get over yourself, go to bed, get some sleep it will help cognitive functioning.

Secondly I recently posted the back up for this claim in another post, keep up and pay attention.

Third have some patience the WaPo doesn’t post the latest on fact checking every day.

Fourth rest assured if his mouth is moving the chances are high Trump is misleading or lying. He has shown this to be true the past year. He has demonstrated his lack of character and integrity.

Fifth, his latest talking point,(and I’m paraphrasing) “I believe the dems want to shut down the government” will push him over the limit as he continues to mislead the American people.

Democrats are refusing to vote for a budget unless illegal aliens are given amnesty. They will regret doing it. The majority of Americans want illegal immigration stopped. They will be know for putting illegal aliens before the interest of their fellow Americans. Good luck with that.

Here are a few lies:

January 18: https://www.factcheck.org/2018/01/trump-tweets-faulty-black-approval-claim/

Omitted this link because WB will not allow that many to be posted in one comment.

He repeated the same lie from 1/17 more than once, but let’s just count it as one.

Trump repeatedly denied using profane language about Haiti, El Salvador, and Africa. Witnesses in the room heard it. How many lies surround just this one example?

This link cites 320 lies in the past year to regarding Trump and “fake news.”

Reporting errors are not “fake news.” Stories which are corrected, retracted, or which involve the suspension of a reporter are not “fake.” That is what happens with legitimate news organizations when they make errors.

Here are two more lies for January 18th: https://www.factcheck.org/2018/01/trumps-phony-fake-news-claims/

It would take a long time to just keep listing Trump’s lies more recent than the 2,000 catalogued already. He averages over 5 a day.

Hmmm…Politicians lie. President Trump is a politician. Therefore, President Trump is a liar.

Fortunately for the president, he told the truth to his followers during the campaign. He has fulfilled, or is trying to fulfill, every campaign promise he made.

Should Schumer and his Democrat colleagues successfully shut down part of the government, I anticipate President Trump taking to the airwaves frequently and aggressively.

The mainstream media will attempt to justify any shutdown. The president will correct their attempts to lay blame on him and congressional Republicans.

In a shootout between Chucky Schumer and Nancy Pelosi and the president…my bet is on the Trumpster.

So the HoR is republican controlled , The Senate is republican controlled and the administration is repub controlled yet it is the dens who are at fault. The dems are simply wanting a bipartisan bill and the repubs refuse to offer a bipartisan bill, not to mention Trump has added his own list of wants at the last moment. So I suggest we call it what it really is the shthole shutdown.

I think it is more like Ryan has said, we were the opposition party, it was easy, now were are leading it is hard. The conservatives can’t govern all they can do is destroy the country in their attempt to return us to the gilded age.

The Dems got everything they wanted, except amnesty. There is even a 6 year extension of the chip program. They are holding the budget hostage for one thing, amnesty for illegal aliens. The are shutting down govt for something unrelated to the budget, something they railed against Republicans for doing back in 2013. This is going to blow up in their faces.

This is a perfect example of Democratic’s over reaching. Give them a mile, they want a mile and a half.

They had everything they wanted in the bill except what wasn’t in the bill and they shut down the government because it wasn’t. That was stupid.

What’s so important about illegals in this country? I’ll answer that. They want the votes. It’s the only way for Democratics to stay relevant. They can’t get votes by earning them, they have to import them illegally.

What a shame, but then again they are Democratics. Spoiled children who expect to get everything they want. When push comes to shove they shove harder because they are selfish and spoiled. Democratics are buying votes from generations of government dependent voters who expect more and more freebies in exchange for votes.

Be prepared people. There will come a time when they won’t be able to get elected legally. Prepare for disenfranchisement, more rioting and property destruction, character assassination, perhaps actual assassination. They will stoop to the lowest of levels to keep power. The best remedy is to shine a light on their actions. This shutdown is just another over reach. Call them out on it. Don’t let it be swept under the rug of politics. Don’t let them act like children blaming their imaginary friends. Place the blame squarely where it belongs, on the shoulders of the Democratics.

And true to form good ol’ Adolph is blaming everyone but his own self just like his business.

Next thing you know he will make a call to Putin to bail him out, and we will have Senators being strong armed by Russian operatives and NRA bag men running cash for votes schemes.

KAP if you recall Hillary won the popular vote by 3 million or so. Of course Adolph Stalin Trump immediately claimed it was due to so many illegals voting. However his voter suppression gang of thugs couldn’t find anything to validate this lie. So your question about votes reflects badly on you. Yep you are perpetrating lies, spreading false information and allowing known liars to frame the political conversations around the country.

While we are discussing the perpetration of lies, spreading false information and allowing known liars to frame the political conversations around the country lets talk about the next myth you are using. The dems don’t seem to be putting illegals first as you and many other misguided conservatives have heard from movement leaders. This DACA thing has been on the table for quite some time, the repubs just refuse to deal with it. The bi partisan agreement for this CR included DACA it wasn’t until Adolph Stalin Trump staged the shthole meeting with his neo-nazi staff members, that blew up in his face, that DACA was taken off the table making the proposed CR a partisan bill and unfit for yes vote by many Dems and even a few repubs.

Weary…umm…I hate to point out the obvious…but The repubs have a stacked SCOTUS, Control of the Senate and the House of Representatives and the governorship of 33 states and 36 state legislatures. So don’t you think the dem are out of power?

To make your absurd allegations seem even more foolish the repubs have made a well organized attack on the will of the people with ALEC led effort of voter suppression the past 8 years as well as the gerrymandering of most of the states they hold power in.

This is called projection Weary when you attribute your own thoughts, feeling, and motives to another person.

The only thing Republicans won’t give them in the budget is amnesty. The democrats have backed themselves into a corner. If they want amnesty for the illegal dreamers they’re going to have to give the Republicans all the enforcement measures they want, or they can just let the previous executive order expire, and then they are subject to deportation.

So KAP you seem able to count the Obama lies on one hand and you are trying to compare that to Mr. five deferment draft dodgers (as Sen Duckworth refers to AS Trump) 5 a day for the past year! Good luck with that. How funny you would try to suggest some type of comparison.

So why on earth,KAP, would you believe the CR had “everything” the dems wanted! With the repubs record why would you think 3/15/18 means it shouldn’t be settled earlier? That ploy is as naive as it gets.

The dems wanted a bipartisan bill and with an eye towards the debt this administration is racking up why would we build this wall Mexico supposed to pay for as part of the temporary CR? Trump sabotaged this CR, tripped on his ego while asking stupid questions and got called on it. It’s the lack of leadership that is most appalling, not just A.S.Trump but McConnell and Ryan well. The shthole shutdown is a glaring example of the inability of the repubs to govern. But what does Ryan care he got his half million from the Koch Bros once the tax bill passed. The rest of the country can go to h**l for all he cares.

dbs only 45 repubs voted for the CR. The poor leadership of the repubs couldn’t even get their own team to march in lockstep.

Adolph was elected because of his ability to deal. He told us he was the best and had blamed Obama for the last shutdown because he couldn’t reach a deal. Now we have seen he is all talk. He failed badly and intentionally IMHO when he stacked the deck, at the shthole meeting, with neo-Nazis like Miller. Hardly the art of the deal stuff is it?

The repubs have had years to get a comprehensive immigration plan together. They haven’t. The fact they are dealing with immigration in a short term CR is beyond belief. They cannot lead they are failures and they need to step up and admit they are corrupted. The people of this country have been sold out by these thugs and they should resign en masse in disgrace. Trump should lead the way.

McCain wasn’t in Washington. But according to Roll Call.

“Lawmakers spent the day trying to negotiate a deal. Democrats huddled as a conference prior to the vote, while several GOP members met in Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office. White House Legislative Affairs Director Marc Short traversed the Capitol throughout the night to meet with House and Senate leadership offices. But in the end, the Senate was unable to muster the 60 votes needed to cut off debate on the measure, falling short, 50-49. “

J2, we have time yet to work on DACA. What is more important illegals or citizens? As far as Obama lies go those were the big ones I didn’t count the little lies he told everyday. As far as lies go “Welcome to the world of politics”. Democrats had 2 years of super majorities during the Obama ‘s first term to get anything they wanted without republicans, so the blame goes both ways. But we all know you hate Trump so it is no surprise you comment the way you do. What is it j2, are you going to loose freebies?

To bad dbs the repubs screwed the pooch when it comes to DACA. Years to pass a comprehensive immigration plan, yet nothing. Trump in his haste to get even with Obama screwed the pooch on DACA months ago, yet nothing from the repubs to fix it. Would you trust them to do something after the CR was passed ?

The conservatives don’t want DACA and they want to fund a wall that was supposed to be paid for by Mexico. That is an expense the country can’t afford and shouldn’t be in a CR.

Trump screwed the pooch at the shthole meeting dbs. Stacking the room with neo-Nazis who didn’t want to get an agreement on DACA. Those guys played Trump like a fiddle, just as the repub establishment has done these past months. Trump is to weak and ignorant to lead. He is being led because of his lack of experience and his narcissism.

IMHO the time has come for repubs to beg that Daniels women to take Trump back and keep him blissfully spanked until his term is up.

Trump is doing a lot as far as immigration reform goes. He’s actually enforcing the laws that are already on the books.

This is a typical example of Democratics lying to get what they want. They cease to enforce the laws on the books and then cry the system isn’t working. They claim the only way to fix it is to rewrite all the laws in a “comprehensive” package that will be designed to give Democratics everything they need to stack the vote. When they don’t get it they blame Republicans.

That’s totally dishonest and it’s no wonder people are not supporting them.

We don’t have to do anything about the dreamers. Helping them stay is nothing more than a courtesy. If the left wants to hold the American people hostage to their illegal alien lobby, then the law and attrition will take care of the dreamers.

Why should we cater to people who refuse to do it the correct way? It’s amazing people will get up in front of cameras and brag about how illegal they are and then insist they be given what others are waiting and waiting for by doing it legally.

They won’t lift a finger to help themselves. They simply expect the government/Democratics to hand it to them. I don’t want people like that infesting my shit hole.
