Donald Will Have to Face the Gender Gap
It worked. Make America Awesome Again, the Trump-is-the Devil PAC, went after Melania with nude photos from a long-ago magazine spread. Their official mission, like many GOP-linked PAC’s, is to stop Trump. But they also support Cruz. So Trump took the bait and went after Heidi Cruz, allowing Ted Cruz to play the offended, chivalrous horseman of the great SouthWest.
And Liz Mair, who can get as vulgar as anyone in the heat of a debate, played tag team with the PAC she founded, reminding Trump that Cruz did not have anything to do with the ad. So there. Ha-Ha. Ha-Ha. And seeing she's had a little trouble raising funds in the past, this should help her resume as a gunslinger.
The point of this low-brow vulgar attack? To encourage Mormons in Utah to reject the lascivious plutocrat from Gotham City. Which they did. Not that Mormons mind rich candidates of course. But more than that. It reinforced Trump's unfavorable image with many women. So Utah was merely a springboard to the larger issue of how can the Donald win enough votes among women in the general election. Mission accomplished. It worked.
What can and should Donald Trump do? His instinctive attack on Heidi Cruz was likely not the best response. Tactically speaking. Because the story is now the larger issue of his so-called gender gap. Which many polls do indeed point to. His unfavorableness with women - both within the GOP but especially with the general population - are unprecedented for a presidential candidate who is leading his party's nomination race.
As Liz Mair slugs it out with progressive journalists, by defending her PAC's using of nude photographs with the best po-mo deconstructionist language - female images of subservience etc - it seems Donald should walk back from that mud-wrestling pit. He's not going to win this one by grappling in the ooze with Liz Mair. Can he resist the temptation?
The issue of women and Trump's campaign has been a slow train coming and it won't be easy to change tracks. Trump may even double down on this and still somehow win the GOP nomination. But the general election is another matter. He will have to close the gender gap, and he will have to do it with the mainstream media gunning for him.Posted by Keeley at March 25, 2016 7:20 PM
