Notes: The Chatter Rankings are created by searching each candidate's name plus "2008" in the Google News database. This month tested but not qualifying are John Cox (interference 204) and Jeb Bush (56). Purged this month are withdrawees Jim Gilmore (180) and Mark Warner (624; both will seek Virginia's senate seat), Wesley Clark (60) and Tommy Thompson (75). Non-contenders are kept on the rolls as Vice-Presidential possibilities (e.g. Rice) and benchmarks (e.g. Dean).

If this were a newspaper it would line my cat’s litter box, no offense intended. It’s just that I fail to see any importance in these unscientific results, whatsoever.

Not so fast, David. These rankings look like a pretty good indication of various media “efforting”. The Washington media especially have always been McCain’s number one constituency. Look, too, at all the mentions of Ron Paul who, left up to the grassroots Republican constituencies, would still be on a cot in his office (tied up with a rag in his mouth).

Also of interest as the least publicised Secretary of State in modern times, would be Condi Rice. She should be getting at least as much mention as Paul on the weight of her office alone.

On the Democratic side it is interesting how hard it is to get noticed when you’re a failed Democratic presidential candidate who has attempted to stay in the limelight. It’s a sure bet Gore would get hardly any notice at all if Republicans would just stop ragging him about global warming. Howard Dean, who frankly has done a brilliant job at the DNC, couldn’t draw a crowd if he promised to jump from a plane without a parachute.

Then, too, it is difficult to get mentions for Bill Richardson, who is the only Democrat who stands a chance of actually sniping off Republican votes.

It is fairly interesting stuff, but for non-obvious reasons.

I forgot to mention total mentions. Dems 2 to 1 over Reps…

I find this data interesting, but think it’s oddly framed. For instance, the footnote claims that Warner is “purged this month” because he’s withdrawn from the race, but there he is at the top of the pile for the month of September along with Hillary Clinton.

Even if the “purging” hasn’t kicked in yet, if withdrawing from the race is a reason for purging, then it should have happened nearly a year ago when Warner announced he wasn’t running. In fact, he can’t be said to have “withdrawn” from something he was never part of to begin with.

I suppose the data remains interesting as an indication of possible media bias if Warner is still getting more press as a potential presidential candidate than those actually running. But without any indication that that’s what happening, it seems pretty obvious that if “Warner” and “08” are coming up in searches, it has nothing to do with a presidential campaign and everything to do with a senate campaign in 08.
