Koran Abuse Greatly Exaggerated

The military detailed abuse of the Koran at Guantanamo. There is really very little fire, despite all the smoke, sound and fury. U.S. guards showed remarkably good behavior, especially considering the conditions and the uncooperative prisoners. Koran abuse was often at the hands of the detainees. I guess some of them care less about their faith than we were led to believe.

You can find more in this article, among others. For those who don't want to follow the link let me give you a taste.

On 14 MAY 03, a guard observed a detainee rip his Koran into small pieces. The guard recorded the incident contemporaneously in a sworn statement.

On 5 JUN 03, a guard observed two detainees accuse a third detainee of not being a man. In response, the detainee urinated on one of their Korans. The detainees resided in adjacent cells. The event was recorded in FBI FD-302s, on 5 JUN 03 and 19 JUN 03.

On 19 JAN 05, a detainee tore up his Koran and tried to flush it down the toilet. Four guards witnessed the incident and it was recorded in the electronic blotter system.

On 23 JAN 05, a detainee ripped pages out of his Koran and threw them down the toilet. The detainee stated he did so because he wanted to be moved to another camp. Four guards witnessed the incident and it was recorded in the electronic blotter system.

Let the riots begin. Oh sorry, not the right people doing the wrong things.

Looking at the record, I find nothing for us particularly to be ashamed of. Mistakes were made and corrected. I know that some people will find our record inadequate and continue to demand perfection. You can't have it. I wonder how many of you could go though a single day if you were required to live up to this kind of standard. I can't. I admit that I drove slightly above the speed limit yesterday. I got annoyed with my kids and kind of yelled at them for not taking out the garbage (I may have used disrespectful language. I don't recall.) and I failed to finish reading the Sunday newspaper, as I had planned. I do mean to make light of this situation.

The abuses listed are small things. I know that extremists claim to take it very seriously and that they respond with deadly violence, but the fault lies with them, not us. It just proves that reason doesn't work all the time. Some people are just plain unreasonable. If it wasn't this, it would be something else. This violence and denunciations come from some of the same people who regularly desecrate my flag, sometimes at the very demonstrations where they demand respect for their things. Well, respect is a two way street, boys.

Enough is enough. We can't be perfect, although I doubt if anyone else in the history of the world has shown such respect for the beliefs of their captured enemies. There comes a time in everyone's experience when we just have to stop apologizing. The Emperor has no clothes.

When we hear our prisons compared to Gulags, we have to wonder if the person making the comparison has ever really looked into the case. It is insulting to those who suffered in Gulags and I am offended by Amnesty's stupidity. And all those extremists who constantly trash my country and its symbols offend me. The difference is I don't riot and kill when I am annoyed. I consider that the mark of intelligence and reason. It is about time our enemies behaved as well. I won't hold my breath while I wait.
