Contemplating the L-word

Contemplating the L-word is the title of Fred Barnes’ column from last Friday at The Weekly Standard. What is the L-word? It isn’t liberal. It’s landslide.

Binkley,

You don’t mind if give Barnes a little dose of reality, do you? First off, stop using the re-elected word. Bush was not elected. He was appointed. And someday, some GOP wag will have to tell why the sodomy ruling was an attack on state’s rights by the Supreme Court, but stopping Florida from counting votes was not.

The Improving Economy.
Yada, yada. The leading indicators I look at are climbing unemployment, an attack on overtime pay and a “go-ahead” on debt that makes Elton John look thrifty.

A Successful War.
“Two, to be exact,” says Barnes. None, to be exact says reality. Afghanistan is a mess, with key Taliban leaders still there and tribal rule grwoing every where but Kabul. Osama’s boys are alive and well and out blowing things up. Nice win, Barnes. Iraq is the second failure. Yes, we kicked some ass and killed more civilians as we lost in 9/11, but the whole war was predicated on a lie and our sons and daughters are being killed on an every-other-day rate. If these are “wins” I would hate to see what Barnes calls a loss.

Big Domestic Issue.
If the turth about the prescription drug benefit coems out, this will be a black eye for both parties.

A Ton of Money.
Well, Bush wins this one. With all the tax breaks he gave his millionaire cronies, they will have even more dough to send to him. Clear advantage Bush on the amount of money, but we’ll have to wait to see if the election can be bought. (I would bet plans to steal another one are already underway).

Democrats in Disarray.
Right now, there is a divided party. I am not going to worry about this until January 2004. If the problem is still there, then Barnes may have a point. I have a feeling Dean will be in full control by then.

Discredited Media.
“embarrassingly wrong as they were in covering the war in Iraq” That’s right. The passed on the same lies and misinformation as Bush. They are discredited and will only earn their credit back if they investigate all of the Bush crimes and not leave it to Michael Moore (whose next film should be the undoing of the Bush royalty).

” One can imagine a Democratic ticket—Lieberman-Graham perhaps—that would be competitive.”

They can? Not a chance. Maybe a ticket of Dean and Kerry or Edwards.

“But you have to like Bush’s chances a lot better than any Democrat’s at the moment.”

At the moment, I agree. We have 18 months to get the truth out and open the minds of the public (including the masses who still think Iraq was behind 9/11).

All in due time. It should be a great season of debates, especially if Bush has the balls to get onstage with Dean.

The “L” word is “Liar” and there are plenty of us who make that very well known over the next year and a half.

I believe that George Bush has lead the country down an immoral and unlawful path. Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel, and he is wearing the flag every day.

I love my country and I love our right to vote (assuming the GOP has not rigged the election computers). George Bush’s Presidency has hurt our country and our electoral process. Those are things I will not forgive on Election Day.

Robbie D

PS: To all the neocons, notice I didn’t use the word “Clinton?” That’s becuase he doesn’t matter any more. He was a great President, but is out of the picture. I suggest you start doing the same.

Nice follow-up Robbie.

But I need to repeat one thing:

“One can imagine a Democratic ticket—Lieberman-Graham perhaps—that would be competitive.”

I can’t help but laugh everytime I see someone on the right refer to Lieberman as the most electable candidate. It just shows of out of touch some of the guys are.
