Al Gore is looking good for '04

Poor ole Al. There was a “Draft Gore For 2004” rally in his home state, with a host of musical entertainers and speakers. This so called rally pulled in a grand total of 100 people. I don’t think things are looking good for this democrat.

I think Al should grow his beard back out. And his campaign slogan should be “You kids get off my damn lawn!”.

He knows he shouldn’t run in 2004, can’t you guys give it a rest? It’s enough that I still have to hear Republicans guffawing over Clinton penis jokes SIX years after the fact.

Didn’t Gore already announce that he was not going to run in 2004?

Plenty of news articles say this:

I don’t really understand why there are people who want him to run, since he has already declared that he does not want to.

Because, and I’m loathe to admit this, the Democrats are lacking a powerful candidate as we approach the 2004 election. At least Gore has wide name recognition.

Of course, there was no clear contender back in 1991 either …

…wide name recognition.

And I think that right there is the key to winning an election. I don’t like admitting it but the American public is easily influenced by targeted advertising and media campaigns, unfortunately most of which they see on television.

Bush’s $200 million should buy an awful lot of TV advertising, certainly much more than the Democrats can afford.

It’s depressing to think about this way, but the campaign for President really boils down to a branding issue and as you mantioned “wide name recognition.”

Hmmm… Judging by the election results of the 2000 race, perhaps he’d be better off not to start in his home state. =D

Gore did himself in anyway by going on Saturday Night Live. We all got to see what a joke he really was. Actually, I liked him more on that show than ever in his political career. He’s still a log.

Back to the future
There will probably soon be another candidate in the Democratic race, and the last name may not be Clark or Clinton. There’s lots of talk in the liberal circles that Al Gore is being pushed hard to get in the race. With ush sliding, Democrats are seeing a chance for a replay of 1992, but to have that chance some feel they have to stop Howard Dean, who is viewed as a certain loser to Bush in the general election. Each of the one-time favorites - John Kerry, John Edwards, Joe Lieberman - seems to have had their moment and fallen back. Gephardt, while viewed as eminently capable, is also viewed as nearly unelectable because he just doesn’t pull votes outside of Missouri. Clark is seen by many as a great VP choice, but isn’t ready for the top job.

Many Democrats are still angry about the 200 election, and would love to see a rematch. Some polls, in fact, have shown Gore ahead in a rematch with Bush. From Gore’s standpoint, if he doesn’t run now, he will almost certainly have to compete with Hillary Clinton in 2008, and that could be a bloody primary fight. Adding fuel to the push for Gore is the fact that many traditional Democratic money sources (many of whom backed Gore in 2000) have remained on the sidelines thus far, meaning Gore would have access to plenty of campaign funds. If Bush doesn’t recover some of his lost favorability ratings in the next 30 days, I suspect the rumblings for Gore will grow into a roar, especially if Dean continues to lead the current pack of candidates.

Comments: Back to the future
I’ve always considered myself an independent voter. The Republican’s have been trouncing the Democrats lately in a lot of arenas. Bush has really helped the Republican’s get those votes.

Truthfully I’m starting to really think he had NO plan for what to do after winning in Iraq. I’m not sure he’s told us the REAL reason for being there in the first place and the fact that he’s given this huge tax break for the rich just as we need to start PAYING for the war in Iraq really makes me question his leadership.

After saying all that though, I think Gore is probably the only Democratic candidate for president that I could make myself vote for in 2004. He’d probably appease foriegn interests more than I’d like but I can stomach that more than 4 more years of Bush.

I do not trust the other nominees enough to vote for them, so I’d probably just ‘throw my vote away’ on some 3rd party schmuck if one of them gets it. Of course I’d still vote for McCain or some other Republican over Bush if given the chance.

Just thought I’d share

Phone Bank Opens As The Battle to Restore Gore To The White House Continues.
For Immediate Release

Although Al Gore endorsed Howard Dean last month for President, a group of loyal Gore supporters are working nationwide to convince the former vice president that the wrongs of 2000 can never be corrected unless Mr. Gore takes office and justice is returned to the American political system.

Patriots for Gore and Draft Gore New England have combined forces to set up a phone bank in NH to contact 65,000 likely Democratic voters and urge them to write in Gore’s name for president. In addition, Patriots for Gore will be running ads in the local newspapers and on radio stations beginning January 16 in order to secure the needed number of votes to make the 15% threshold. “ We will run a four-week blitz of phone calls, letter writing, mass mailings and grass-roots organizing like never before” says Jan Moore, chair of the newly formed Patriots for Gore.

To aid in this effort a local phone number and an email address have been set up to supply voters with additional information. Voters in NH can call:603-430-VOTE(8683) or email us as at WriteInAlGore04@aol.com.

In addition to NH, the group will be contacting other states where the Secretary of State can add Mr. Gore’s name to the ballot at their request. These states include MA, CA, and CT. There are also write-in campaigns taking hold in NJ, TN (uncommitted slot), VT, WI and RI.

This effort is intended to make sure that Al Gore has a proper delegation at the Democratic Convention this year. We feel that a deadlocked convention is a strong possibility. By having a Gore delegation present, it will be much more likely that the convention will turn to Mr. Gore as a consensus candidate, as multiple national and regional polls have shown him to be over the last 8 months.

Mac Hathaway, New England regional coordinator of the Draft Gore Movement, states that “Symbolism is what gets people to the polls, and Democratic grass-roots activists kicking and screaming their way into the convention, on behalf of Al Gore, freedom, and all that is right in America, that symbolism will not be lost. We believe that Gore is the natural, logical, and morally “correct” candidate, and we will not rest until Mr. Gore has the Democratic Nomination, and justice is returned to the American political system”

Patriots for Gore is a newly formed PAC, a fully FEC registered and reporting campaign organization, headed by Jan Moore. According to Moore, Patriots for Gore was established shortly after the Dean endorsement to give Gore supporters across the nation a place to come together and continue to support Mr. Gore’s vision for America. Moore said, “We respect Mr. Gore’s decision to endorse Howard Dean, and indeed, we respect and admire all of the announced candidates. This, however, does nothing to diminish our resolve in working for the only man we believe can truly turn the tide as this nation’s next President. We refuse to deal any longer with a status quo that enslaves the soul and stifles the voice.”

The group remains encouraged that while Gore has not embraced their efforts, he has not discouraged them either. In a statement issued Dec. 13, 2003, he says: “I want to take this opportunity to offer my heartfelt thanks for your continued loyalty and friendship, especially during this last year since I decided not to be a candidate. Though unsolicited, your actions have been an immeasurable source of support. It is difficult to express in words the deep gratitude that Tipper and I feel for all your efforts on our behalf.”
