Happy Holidays: Straight Talk On the Anti-Political Correctness Movement

It’s Christmas Eve as I write this, and I accept in advance that some will not like what I have to say. However, it’s that time of year again when, like clockwork, the religious right screams and cries about their imaginary “war on Christmas.” Today, after putting in a work-intensive morning and afternoon preparing Christmas dinner for the family, I ran out to a Chinese restaurant for the work-free Christmas Eve dinner that quite a few families enjoy, and witnessed a grown man throwing a temper tantrum because the cashier had dared wish him a happy holiday instead of a merry Christmas. It’s a smaller, and less dangerous example of how the anti-PC movement is nothing more than when bigots realize that their bigotry is no longer socially acceptable.

Case in point, a conservative woman wrote a letter to the editor in my hometown's newspaper saying that she's "offended by gays and lesbians," and that she's "offended by Muslims and atheists," and so basically they should have to divorce their lovers and renounce their religious beliefs because she doesn't like it.

The point is, most people who rail against political correctness are bigots who see the popularity of their hate going the way of the dinosaur, and this rallying cry is simply their dying whimper. They choose to live with outdated Victorian ideals that have manifested itself into prejudice and hate. Another example is the term "post-racial society," and how when you call a racist a racist, then it's you that's the racist! Funny how that works, right?

A Republican gets to call President Obama the N-word, say that unarmed Black men who are murdered by police deserve to be killed because of their race, and a Republican National Committeeman, Dave Agema from Michigan, writes in a white supremacist magazine that "Blacks are different by almost any measure to all other people. They cannot reason as well. They cannot communicate as well. They cannot control their impulses as well. They are a threat to all who cross their paths, black and non-black alike.", you're not allowed to call them racists anymore.

Another talking point of the religious right these days is "Put god/prayer back in schools!" In other words, they want to indoctrinate other people's children with a religion that the child, or the child's parents, may not even believe in. In fact, they seek to make America a theocracy, a country run according to the tenets of one religion, and where the only freedom of religion that a citizen of said nation has is to convert to that religion. Despite the First Amendment to the United States Constitution declaring that America is a secular nation and that there is to be no state-sanctioned religion, Republicans still insist on trampling the rights of non-Christians to pursue their agenda of a de facto Christian theocracy; where women know their place, gays and lesbians are persecuted, Muslims are deported, and the right to exercise religion freely does not apply to other faiths. If you'd like a preview of what it looks like to live in a theocracy, look no further than the United Arab Emirates, where you need a license to drink alcohol, and you can be arrested for failing to dress according to the laws of the Muslim faith.

Finally tonight, as I look at the state of our union as the last hour of Christmas Eve, 2015 winds down and am thankful for my own right of conscience, I'm grateful for our nation's core principles that the folks on the right so vehemently hate. There's a roll of postage stamps sitting on my desk, designed with the American flag, and below the flag, each stamp says "Liberty," "Equality," "Freedom," or "Justice." Everything the left fought so hard to protect and guarantee for themselves and future generations, and everything the angry right-wing reactionaries fight so hard to take away.

The only time the right cares about liberty is when it involves health insurance. The only time the right cares about equality is, well, given their constant vitriolic opposition to equal marriage rights for gay couples, never. The only time the right cares about freedom is when they've hijacked the term "religious freedom" to mean the ability of Christians to discriminate against LGBT people and Muslims. And the only time the right cares about justice is when a police officer has brutally murdered yet another Black teenager and they stand up for the cop, even when there's video proving the cop was not justified in any sense of the word.

The fact is, the far-right is the reason that America has and needs a justice system, the Bill of Rights, and our Constitution. Every day, I'm glad that through the years, whether it was slavery, women's suffrage, interracial marriage, abortion, segregation, or gay marriage, despite the temper tantrums of conservatives, America has always come out on the right side of history, though always much later than the rest of the civilized world. And this is why, despite Republican candidates for President weakening our standing in the world and bolstering ISIS' recruiting efforts through their rhetoric before they've gotten anywhere near the office, despite a massive movement to oppress people of other faiths, despite blatant and disgusting racism against the President of the United States for the past seven years, I still believe in America. I still believe that we can and will overcome these culture-war crusaders who want to take us back to the 1950's, and we will stand before the rest of the world on the right side of history.

We will never have a secular country. Blue laws, religious holidays (with double-time), suicide criminalization, the heritage of the cold war religious oaths to this nation, time off from school for religious holidays—We need a cleansing of all the religion that faces us day to day.

If we want a secular country that is. There are ways to do it, I suppose.

Christmas…bah, humbug. Having a national holiday named for Christ is un-American. Respecting and honoring tradition is so mean and uncaring. Evil doesn’t exist and goodness comes from the State.

Never-the-less; A very Merry Christmas to all.

A lot of straw men in all that. I say merry Christmas. I don’t care what others say to me and I pity the fools who are offended.

As for the other things. I am not a racist. I do not support shooting down unarmed innocents (and do not believe that happens very often). I recall that all those bad things mentioned, such as slavery, laws against interracial marriage etc, were enforced by the coercive power of government, since they evidently could not survive in a free market.

Anyway, Merry Christmas. To those offended I say, “grow up.”

Do you think there could be a reason Christmas and the New Year are only a week apart?

Christians celebrate the birthday of Jesus one week before western civilization celebrates the beginning of a new year.

Can you imagine the controversy if Jesus was born on April 15th?

As far as I’m concerned, Every day is Christmas!

The holidays are extra fluff and flutter.

We agree on this. I hate habitual victims.

C&J, I don’t hate figuratively or literally, wastes to much energy, but I do find these overly sensitive non issues such as the “war on Christmas” to be distracting. The Winter equinox/solstices holiday season has been shared by many different religions for years. Who cares, celebrate the season as you wish, use the phrase you find appealing and let others do the same. Which I think is a view shared by most people. It is the media twits such as O’Reilly who use this issue to gain audience IMHO that cause the problem.

As far as I’m concerned, Every day is Christmas!
Weary my grand kids think that is a great idea. Posted by: j2t2 at December 27, 2015 10:59 AM

We can play with the word “hate”. It is way overdone. I mean in this case dislike and disrespect. I think the emphasis on victims is pernicious. We can pity real victims. But lots of victims get maybe not what they deserve but what you could expect given their habits and behaviors.

My goal is not to support victims but rather help them stop being victims. Those who insist on habitually standing where the shit land are saying with their actions that they enjoy being shit on. I do not accept that it is not their choice and those are the victims I hate.

To pick up on a point of yours, police, for some reason, aren’t using the non-lethals that they touted 5 or so years back AAAAND then the right are heralding them everyday heroes for doing their duty, which is tantamount to murder. It’s not just blacks that are shot which makes no sense in the sloganeering of “Black lives matter”. It’s all lives that could be saved through the carrying and the use of non-lethals. Blacks, whites, hispanic et al.

C&J, this blame the victims mentality you seem to be expressing here is worrisome. Take the possible DUI guy in the video in the link below. He was drunk and wrecked his vehicle so it was his actions that caused him to be crawling out of his car and getting in the way of the police officer clearing the area of terrorist, right???

I specifically talk about habitual victims. You probably could not reasonably predict being killed by a cop if you are driving drunk, but you can expect lots of trouble for doing so, maybe killing someone else or getting killed yourself.

We are talking about reasonable expectations. Any of us can be victims. If we do things that lead to being victimized we should stop. And if we insist on living dangerously, we really cannot complain when the predictable happens.

Anyway, if you are sometimes a victim, it is natural. If you are always a victim, it might be a good idea to reconsider your habits and behaviors.

If you want to change your outcomes, change your habits and behaviors.

Jesus Christ you leftists have really gone off the deep-end. If you guys believe that even half of this tripe is true, it’s no wonder you guys have so much hate for your fellow Americans.

Trey, I don’t know if you actually believe this crap or if you are just trolling, but I really do hope you will man up and defend it.

It is incredible how this leftist “theology”, the cancerous blight which is bringing our country down so low and canceling out freedom of speech, freedom of thought, and simple truth, can be spouted by anyone with a modicum of intelligence. When and how did this heinous thought control mechanism arrive on the scene and deprive us of truth or the right to free speech? All this twitterpated author can offer are pejorative labels that he wishes would stick to the people who disagree with him, that is, anyone with an IQ over 3. Same old disgusting perverted PC. It is time for this government adopted thought control method to die once and for all the dishonorable death it deserves. Who are the victims of PC? The real victims are truth, freedom of speech, freedom of thought, and the unbiased view of what is really going on.
