Something we can all be thankful for.
I hope all Watchbloggers had a wonderful Thanksgiving. This holiday is an opportunity to appreciate and be thankful for the treasures in one’s life.
Today, I also had the opportunity to watch a NOVA documentary about the recent Mars Science Laboratory mission to Mars. As I digest my hearty turkey dinner, I realized that I am profoundly lucky to live in a country that strives so very hard to pursue knowledge about an alien world. No other country has a space program that even attempts to match our accomplishments, and we are truly a unique nation. This is definitely a clear example of American exceptionalism that we could all agree on.
It is true that our manned space program's future is a bit uncertain; however, I believe the importance of such programs will diminish in the next decade as we become increasingly reliant on robots. Artificial Intelligence is growing at an astonishing pace and robots will soon end up doing many of the jobs that we would consider unfit for humans either due to danger, monotony, or some other reason. The future of space exploration is robotic and the same will probably be true of many other industries soon.
We certainly live in amazing times. I hope all of you are equally as thankful as I am to live in not only the greatest nation in the world, but also to live in what will probably be the time of greatest technological advancement. Yesterday was my 23rd birthday; right now, I am beginning to see the shift in technology within my own life as I compare my childhood in the 1990s with the childhoods of my younger relatives. I guess this is a normal part of "growing up", but I still appreciate the profundity of actually living the experience rather than simply being told about it from someone else.

He was glad he was born and lived in the period he was allotted. I’m 64…I feel the same. I am glad I was born in 1948. I would not want to be your age at this point in time.
While stating how wonderful it is that computers and robotics will be replacing “manpower”, I would ask you what millions of people are going to do when they are replaced by “things”?

Several years ago I had the same realization. It dawned on me how very fortunate I was (and am) to live in the USA.
During my own life time we have gone from Packards to Smart cars, from stay at home bridge club society women to women pushing though the glass ceilings, from totally home-cooked meals to fast food (I rememberer when the first Mickey D’s was built in NC).
I also remember and President Kennedy’s death, Vietnam, the Civil Rights movement, and Watergate.
I suppose for every good thing we have, there is a bad thing that can occur. Hopefully, your generation will be the first to actually see more forward steps, and less steps backward.
In the for what-its-worth-category, we really are trying to leave you a world better than the one we found when we were 23.
