This is what you get with Mitt Romney. He's for a Mandate with policies to force insurance companies to take everybody. Then he's against it. Then he's for it, but just as an example of states as the laboratory of democracy. But despite it's success, (and defeating the point of referencing states as the laboratory of democracy), he says it should only be applied to Massachusetts.
I know it's a somewhat grotesque reference, but when Hannibal Lecter's note to Clarice says, "doesn't this random scattering of sites seem desperately random - like the elaborations of a bad liar?", I think of the way Mitt Romney lies.
There is no symmetry here, no axis of common form, unless you look at Mitt Romney as a pathological liar, a man who simply can't help himself. He will say whatever he might think may be the most appropriate thing for the audience. The trouble is, he will start from the assumption that people have absolutely no memory of what he last said, or no concern.
I get concerned that at some point, he's going to split apart like Superman did in Superman III when they hit him with the artificial Kryptonite, and they'll have some kind of duel to the death.
Seriously, though, I don't know what Republicans see in this man, because quite simply, I don't know which version they like the most. Romney is pushing the hard sell, trying to outmaneuver his marks- sorry, constituents, as he senses different threats to his candidacy.
The big problem is, he's not doing it from some central persona, but taking off the masks and putting them on as he goes along. Maybe you like him right now. Wait a few hours, and he'll bend right back on himself, and make you regret your support.
The question is, how desperate are the Republicans to win, that they have ultimately laid their fate in the hands of a man who can't make up his mind as to what to believe, even as they emphasize the purity of belief as an essential part of a candidate's makeup.

Omg.
Maybe we should arrange for Romney to debate an empty chair. He’ll still find a way to mess it up.

I actually agree with Romney, and I would defund NPR & PBS and so on. Also, I never liked Sesame Street. It’s true. And of all the Muppets, the one I disliked the most was… you guessed it… Big Bird. So I’m a terrible person. Sue me. But at least I have enough sense not to advocate firing Big Bird in front of a bunch of kids, never mind national television. Obama is now out there with his teleprompter, reading the lines written for him by others. He is really hitting back now. He is a good reader, just not much of a president.
It will be interesting to see the next debate. I suppose Obama will study harder next time and we will get to see him at the top of his game. If he evens the score, if Obama comes roaring back we can talk again. But if he turns in a just break even, I think he is lost.
It is really instructive to compare Obama on his own to the controlled and handled Obama. Obama by himself is weak. He is used to the support and help of others. That seems to have been the story of his life, always the one people wanted to succeed.

Look, I’ve been an observer of news and public events since I was a boy. The teleprompter is nothing new to me. I have seen it used by Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, Bush 43, and Obama, and I’ve seen all of their challengers use them.
Obama doesn’t always ring out eloquently, when he doesn’t have his notes before him, but I’ve seen enough about him and read enough about him to know that your claims are complete bull. I’ve heard next to no one describe the President as stupid, and I’ve heard plenty of reporters, figures who dealt with the President describe him as the smartest man in the room, as a decisive leader. More to the point, he’s got the kind of political courage I never saw from Clinton, and an emphasis on getting things done that I’ve seen out of few leaders since the days of Reagan.
And this is crucial to Obama’s advantage over Mitt Romney. Romney likes to say things for effect. You saw how hard to the center he turned. Perhaps your fellow Republicans were lulled into a nice buzz by Romney beating up on Obama, but they should have noticed how much of the time he was trying to sound like Bushian compassionate conservative. I guess your people object to losing more than they object to having a Liberal lite.
Trouble is, he took several positions at once on some subjects, and taken others that have galvanized opposition. He all but admitted he supported vouchercare, making the implications people feared from having Ryan on the ticket reality for people. His budget numbers continue to be fodder for analysis, with people wondering how he’s going to make up the seven hundred thousand billion dollars a year deficit difference his defense and tax policies will make. Your side says it will all be in the deductions, but you haven’t offered a plan for people to see if your numbers add up.
And Big Bird. Why did Mitt have to threaten Big Bird?
The truth is, you had one brief, brilliant moment of success in hard selling Americans on putting a Republican in charge, but the problem is, conditions keep on defying your attempts to make this President look bad.

Obama is at least smart enough to avoid taking fourteen different positions on the same issue. As for PBS? I grew up on PBS, and for a kid who mostly depended on broadcast television, that was my educational programming. It’s also a ridiculously small part of the budget. You could no more balance the budget by killing the government support for Public television than you could put a mouse on a balance, and have him move an elephant stepping on the other side.
But you could kill a liberal budget priority with deficit cutting as a pretext. That seems to be most of what the Republicans are doing, when they’re not attempting suicidal debt ceiling standoffs.

I don’t think the debates were his best work, but my impression of Romney was that he was etch-a-sketching like a mofo, and lying his ass off. Maybe that makes him look better than Obama in the debate, gives the impression he won, but I wouldn’t call that performing well, because he didn’t perform well on the substance.
As for the rest? You, like Romney, don’t depend on substance, but instead rhetoric. Yes, sometimes they’ve failed, screwed the pooch. But personally, I look at much of what you say, and it’s hot off the talking point presses, and often false to boot. You don’t even bother, supposed independent that you are, to fact check the people who are basically the Republican Party mouthpieces.
You are entitled to your opinion of what happened, and what does happen. But can’t force me to respect what you’ve won with these lies you tell and pass on, even if I have to admit the political damage you have been able to inflict with them. You can’t make me think that what you’re saying has the truth behind it.
