Quick Fix Controversies

This is what passes for a 47% tape among Republicans. How pathetic. Really, folks, economic development, working to get minorities to jobs, equality in the treatment of New Orleans with other places that had the red tape waived. Obama treating his pastor like a mentor before that controversy that erupted in 2008? Folks, the Right is desperate not to lose this election, which means that they are looking for the magic clip or controversy to bring Obama down. This tells us something.

This tells us that they thought they could default their way into winning, but now they are faced with a President who is a good candidate on his own terms, and a challenger who isn't.

Romney was the second place finisher to John McCain in 2008. McCain came in second behind George W. Bush in 2000. That ought to tell you something. We're dealing with the bottom of the barrel in terms of good Republican candidates. Meanwhile, Obama hasn't sat still for his opponents attacks, and managed to get good policies into play even as his Republican critics fiercely obstructed him at every turn.

Yes, Obama's made mistakes, but let's see...

Reagan sold arms for hostages and almost consumed his entire first term with a recession that was more severe than it had to be. He grew the size of the federal government after having promised to shrink it, exploded the deficit with tax cuts he promised would shrink it.

Still he got re-elected. Even though he failed to create more jobs in that term than Carter, he got re-elected.

Clinton, the next two term President, managed to get re-elected despite having a vast right wing conspiracy of hypocrites and ideologues hanging onto his leg. He raised taxes, Lost Congress. But he presided, literally speaking, over an improving economy. Didn't matter that he had Whitewater on his back, or all the scurrilous allegations about him. He got re-elected.

Dubya's war in Iraq was just beginning to come apart, the deficit had restarted, just as Democrats warned, and Bush didn't even break into positive job creation territory until after the election. Which he won, if barely. But the economy was starting to improve, and he had caught Saddam Hussein. Would he have won if he hadn't caught him?

Obama's record is not perfect, but we've seen one re-elected President after another re-elected with less than sterling records. The main question is whether people feel things have improved, whether somebody's done something. Hoover came in just in time to have the Stock Market Crash on his watch, and he did do some things to help out. But the reason FDR got re-elected, was his willingness, when he got into office, to actually do something, and a lot of something. People him do that, and that meant despite the terrible economy, they felt that a change would be less productive.

The way I see it, the Romney campaign, and Republican presidential hopefuls in general, came into this election believing that the sheer weight of the troubles of this Presidency would destroy Obama, that they really wouldn't have to provide a substantive reason to vote for the Republican nominee, and not President Obama.

They thought they didn't have to work to win. They were wrong. Now they know it, but it's too late to get a better candidate, to substitute in months worth of better ideas and compelling rhetoric for what they had.

So, they pull stunts, hoping to find that magic moment in the debates, or that magic video that will just sink Obama.

Some will point to the 47% comment as the turning point, and say that Republicans should seek a similar such point. Though imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Romney's rich twit persona was a big help in providing the critical mass behind that failure. Obama's defined himself too well over time to be so easily knocked off balance in that regard. He's laid the groundwork for such an image for years now, and so far there's been no video surfacing where Obama's expressed Romney's level of contempt for the middle or lower classes.

Republicans trying to define Obama as the second coming of Jimmy Carter, fail to realize that they've been the ones talking about malaise, disaster, and other things, that they've been the harbingers of anxiety, rather than the heralds of opportunity. Romney can't even be bothered to explain what his great ideas are which are supposed to be better than Obama's. He can't be bothered to explain his promised tax cuts despite open questions as to how he resolves the revenue shortfall such a policy would inevitably bring.

How can Republicans promise better times without promising anything of substance at all? All we've seen from them are new iterations of the previous administration's policies. The Republicans already tried the quick fix of the Tea Party, and the best that's done for the economy is prepare us a fiscal cliff that's going to drag the economy back into recession. So, thank you, Tea Party. Their supporters say that this means Taxed Enough Already, but I think Tortured Economic Alchemy describes their approach better. They want to take the lead of debt-ceiling inspired uncertainty and crazed machete killer -style spending cuts that return no tax dollars to consumers (since everything is deficit-financed), and turn that into the gold of feverish economic growth.

While Obama's increased domestic manufacturing and exports, kept an American export industry alive, given our nation a competitive boost on solar panels and wind power, Republicans and Tea Partiers have essentially said, "Deregulation and Tax Cuts, then economy magically heals itself."

It hasn't worked. The tax cuts get saved, which isn't surprising because the rich were already saving much of what they made. And deregulation? It seems to be mostly good for creating phantom wealth that disappears in puffs of logic once people realize that the folks abusing this newly deregulated environment used their freedom to just BS people.

I think people have realized that the Republican Economic Agenda has become about developing wealth without actually doing anything productive. A person getting a tax cut doesn't have to increase their work to make more money net. A person who doesn't have to be so honest or forthright with their investors, who can hide how much they're over-leveraged can make more money without actually doing their due diligence, their professional best, or any of that old fashioned stuff.

Then, when things go wrong? When we end up bailing out these people, or having to figure out some way to clean up their mess. And even then, they resist.

America needs to be ahead of this curve, not behind it. We need people who acknowledge problems and take care of them, rather than stay complacent, ignoring them, until the troubles start to snowball, and they try and deal with things in a panic.

Pick the folks who came into this election prepared, not the folks who are only now realizing that they have to give people an active, substantive reason to elect their candidate.

“This is what passes for a 47% tape among Republicans.”

The short term memory of the right means they can release footage like this that was already reported on years ago but still call it a game changer and rage about how this president was clearly not vetted. It’s an intellectually bankrupt undertaking but we see it even here on Watchblog.

“How can Republicans promise better times without promising anything of substance at all?”

It’s a kind of magic. The markets will magically rebound when Romney wins the election just like tax cuts will magically pay for themselves.

If I recall correctly, Bill Clinton is the only dem elected twice since FDR. Dem presidents don’t have a very good track record in this department.

Perhaps obama will win…and if he does, the country will survive. He will continue to do what he has been doing and will undoubtedly call for more taxes, spending, and a huge increase in our authorized debt limit. He will issue even more executive orders, already having surpassed any other president.

He will continue to block the development and use of fossil fuels and, I predict, will provide more mega bucks for wind and solar energy. Of course, there will also be more bankruptcies of those beneficiaries.

He will continue to pursue flawed foreign policy all over the world, especially in the Middle East. He may even have another war in his incapable hands. And, at some point in a possible second term, inflation will begin to rear its ugly head. Europe and China will be close to…or in, recession which will add to our burdens.

Should Romney win, which is doubtful according to all the talking heads, and I echo C&J’s call for dems and libs to stay home and not bother to vote, all the above woe and decline can be cancelled and replaced by a country coming back from the brink of failure under adult leadership and conservative policies.

Royal Flush: “If I recall correctly, Bill Clinton is the only dem elected twice since FDR.”

It simply a lack of trying. Of the five previous Democrats only Clinton and Carter ran for official 2nd terms and only Carter lost. Truman and Johnson declined to run for an official 2nd term and Kennedy was killed before he could.

“He will issue even more executive orders, already having surpassed any other president.”

As far as I can tell you have to go back to Grover Cleveland to find a President who signed fewer Executive orders in his first term than Obama so I’m not sure where you got that.

Adam

No Democrat running for president from 1976 to 2008 won more than 50% of the vote. I always like that stat.

I think the real issue was that Obama ran on not using signing statements and executive orders as an ‘end around congress’ as a campaign issue…

During a May 2008 campaign event in Colorado, Obama promised to “not use signing statements as a way of doing an end run around Congress,” and yet the administration’s announcement that they will use not merely signing statements, but wholesale Executive Orders, as a means of enforcing what Congress refuses to pass, is exactly that – an end run around the Constitution.

BTW, the real issue is that Romney just doesn’t want to win the election, or they would be focusing on the documented failures of this administration not just in governing but especially in keeping the promises of his campaign.

The fact is, it is mostly likely too late now for it to matter much who wins the presidential election or seats in congress.

The national debt is now over $16 Trillion (source: USDebtClock.org).
The total nation-wide debt is over $57 Trillion.
That does not include the $5 Trillion in pension debt ($2.9 Trillion of state pension debt and $2.1 Trillion of local government pension debt).
Unfunded liabilites are almost $121 Trillion (which exceeds total nation-wide assets of $87 Trillion).

Both candidates for president and most (if not all in Congress) want to seriously address the gravity and severity of the nation-wide debt problems in the U.S. Obama simply wants to blame everyone else for one of the largest increases in federal debt in U.S. history. Romney likes and enjoys regressive taxation. Neither are serious about cutting the deficits, debt, or the massive bloat and waste in federal government. But even if either was, it is probably too late now.

And the real problem is not merely the politicians.
The larger problem is the majority of voters who repeatedly reward FOR-SALE, corrupt, and incompetent incumbent politicians with perpetual re-election.

Some believe the theory that things can’t get better until they get much worse (i.e. until things reach rock bottom).

So, it might be a good thing of the worst of the candidates get elected, and the decline of the nation accelerates sooner than later?

Regardless of the election results, a large number of major economic realities will likely begin to accelerate the decades long decline of the nation.

At any rate, the majority of voters have the government that they elect, and re-elect, … , and re-elect, at least, possibly, until repeatedly rewarding failure and FOR-SALE, incompetent, arrogant, and corrupt incumbent politicians in Congress (despite the perpetuation of these abuses) with perpetual re-election finally becomes too painful.
