College Students Get No Love
Republicans have made it very clear their concern really only lies with the wealthy in this country. In the most recent display of this position, the Senate Republicans filibustered a bill that would extend the low student loan interest rates, the President Bush had actually put in place initially. The Senate fell short of the 60 votes needed to begin debate with a partisan vote 52-45. The student loan rates are expected to double this July 1st.
Really, it's just another day of Republicans refusing to agree to anything the Democrats would like to pass, regardless if the previous Republican President implemented the bill in the first place. The Republicans are afraid to sacrifice the protection of the rich to help college students forever indebted by their student loans.
The debate doesn't only lay the Republicans' loyalty to the wealthy, but it is more of a disagreement about how to fund the bill. Of course it is. Actually, there's a general agreement that the student loan interest rate should remain at 3.4%, but the difficulty is agreeing where to take the money from in the budget. In order for Democrats to get this bill to consideration is figure out a way to pay for it without taxing the Republicans' precious rich folks.
Not only do the Republicans want to restrict Obama to one term, they are working on restricting students to one term as well. It is already too expensive for most students to go to college and get a higher education. The loans they pay off already extend into their 40s. If the interest rates double, they'll be paying student loans for an eternity.
The sense of urgency on this matter seems low, even though the real urgency is the fact that 52 votes are no longer a majority, and now the majority needs 60 votes just to put a bill on the table and debate it. With the anti-bipartisanship in Washington, it's almost impossible for anything to pass because one party is always blocking the other.

There are so many other countries, with far less debt and poverty, where the education systems prepare people for the workforce rather than going to school for at least another 4 years.
As nice as it is to go to college and get a degree, the debt accumulated is far more than most people can afford. We could learn a thing or two from other countries who don’t set their youth up to be in debt for the first 20 years of entering the workforce.
