Many a Truth is Told in Jest

Although the Saturday Night Liveopening skit showed several days ago, it continues to resonate. Many a truth is spoken in jest, and the political satire of SNL finds fertile ground in the GOP slate of presidential candidates and even the audience. Whether it is the slap-to-the-forehead performance of the latest GOP flavor of the month front runner, or an audience which actually boos an American soldier, the humor hits the mark.

For some reason, the body of my article did not appear. Here is the rest:

The debate kicks off with a statement by the moderator:

“I’d like to begin by apologizing for responses by the audience at the previous three debates who booed a soldier, cheered executions and applauded the death of an uninsured man. It was inappropriate. I’d also like to apologize for the late start tonight. There was a six car pile-up on route 20 that burst into flames.”

The audience claps.

Obama has already stated these real-life examples of horribly inappropriate behavior ‘do not represent us,’ but obviously, they do represent the GOP audience, and that makes the satire work.

The skit runs about eleven minutes, and if you haven’t seen it already, I would encourage it. Many of these GOP candidates provide a comedian’s dream in terms of material for satire, and many will not be around much longer. Enjoy!

phx8,

The link you supplied is dead.

I would point you to the “Rude Pundit” and his analysis of the GOP race so far. Now Mr.Pundit is indeed rude and the more puritan among us might not want to go there, However I think he has nailed it;

“Accept It, GOP: Mitt Romney Is All You’ve Got:”

http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/

“Look, dear GOP: Mitt Romney will be your nominee and, truly, there is nothing you can do about it. You can go through this whole charade. You can get Sarah Palin in on the party. Chris Christie ain’t gonna run no matter how much money or pie you dangle in front of him because, while he may be despicable, he’s smart: he knows that he’s got a far better chance of winning in 2016. So there is no savior for you. There is no genuine hope on the horizon. You are stuck with the boring Mormon who is desperately trying for crazy conservative street cred by beating up on the cowboy. Sorry to tell you all, but this year is about Romney finally buying the nomination and then losing to Obama. End of story…”

And his summation;

“Let’s put it this way, as we should when we want to see how devolved the GOP has become: as Governor of California, Ronald Reagan vastly expanded abortion access in his state, signed into law the largest state tax increase in U.S. history, and nearly doubled the size of his government. That Republican would be hooted off the stage and run out of town. But that didn’t stop the candidates from evoking his mythical name again and again.”

The GOP hasn’t put forth anyone that could possibly appeal to the more mainstream (and therefore the greater number) of American voters. Romney is the best they have.

Frankly, I just can’t see the “vast” amount of the emp-tea party Christians voting for a Mormon.

The parts of the skit I saw were as funny as the debate itself, phx8. I thought those that ran the “debate” were as funny as those seeking the nomination. It was like the “talent” were caricatures of real professionals, just like the skit. Kelly’s socialist question was as funny and as foolish as anything in the skit.

Seems there was one winner out of the whole thing, wasn’t it just 2 days later that Cain won the Florida straw poll? Go Cain… oh wait perhaps those Florida repubs were confused with “go Canes” seeings it was a Saturday and all.

Rather than provide a working link, I will just urge anyone who is interested to google the SNL skit. Many of the posted versions of the SNL skit begin with an advertisement, which I really, really dislike.

I thought one of the most telling moments of the real debate came at the end, when the moderator asked the candidates to name their choice for VP. A politician would have to be drop-dead stupid to actually name someone, yet many of the GOP candidates actually did just that. Those are people who are seriously, seriously not ready for prime time.

Rocky, I agree with the analysis of the Rude Pundit. I said the same recently. Romney has the funding and organization to buy the nomination, but he makes everyone queasy. About the only things I am sure about with Romney is that he really wants to be president, and he loves big corporations. Other than that, I think he will advocate virtually anything left-wing or right, as long as he thinks that’s what people want to hear, and as long as it doesn’t hurt big corporations.

j2t2, the socialist question in the real debate was great. It’s even funnier, because we have to specify what happened in the real debate from what SNL satirized, otherwise, it’s hard to tell the difference.

Rocky, the tea party members that are emp-tea Christians would be choosing between a Mormon and a Muslim, a not quite TRUE American Mormon vs a anti-American African, etc. For them, believing the propaganda is a matter of faith. I doubt they will stay home if they can’t prevent Romney from getting the nomination. Taking a chance on a potential Antichrist is better that voting for a proven Antichrist.

jlw,
I was thinking about writing an article tomorrow on the subject of the GOP and belief that Obama is the Antichrist. The polling numbers on what many in the GOP believe defies belief. Many conservative Republicans still believe Obama is not an American, with polls ranging from 19% to 25%. Many still believe he is a Muslim. The numbers are highest in southern states such as South Carolina.

The whole thing is just weird. It makes rational debate in this country nearly impossible, and that explains, in part, the occasionally bizarre nature of the GOP presidential debates. When a substantial portion of the base is deranged, is it any wonder so many odd characters make it onto the stage?

Personally, I think a lot of the derangement originates in racism, but whatever the cause, it really hurts the country. We just went through an episode where conservative Republicans wanted the US to default on its debt; that, or instantaneouly cut the federal budget by 44%.

Today, a heckler went on a bit about Christ and God, and finished by yelling that Obama was the Antichrist.

The “debate” was sponsored by Faux so the bar was set pretty low. SNL has a way of bringing out the absurd and conservatives have grown more absurd by the year this past decade.

Can’t wait for Christie to enter the race, is he waiting until the dog and pony show they call the repub debates are over?
