Happy 4/20!

Today is 4/20, also known as “stoners’ holiday.” This day always makes me think about the legalization of marijuana. Even though I don’t partake of the herb, I definitely believe it should be legalized. In fact, I think it’s way past time. There are many reasons why I think marijuana should be legal. Drug-related crime is the main reason why.

Why are police stations using their precious city government money on marijuana arrests? I'd like to see them spend their resources focusing on finding stranger danger who just did a home invasion rather than arresting the stoner down the street. Nearly half of arrests were made for possession. Seriously? Just for having some on them?

From the Office of National Drug Control Policy:

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, there were an estimated 1,663,582 state and local arrests for drug abuse violations in the United States during 2009. Of these drug abuse violation arrests, 6.0% were for the sale/manufacture of marijuana and 45.6% were for marijuana possession.

The penalties for possession vary from state to state. Federal penalty is different: "Possession of marijuana is punishable by up to one year in jail and a minimum fine of $1,000 for a first conviction."

I hope it's a fine. Why should tax payers have to feed, clothe, and house stoners in jail just because they had marijuana on their person? Plus, I believe the time arresting and prosecuting them is wasted.

Marijuana legalization would be a serious blow financially to Mexican drug cartels. Weed is their bread and butter - 60% of their revenue in 2006 was from marijuana. Even people who prefer to grow their own now is affecting their profits. If it were legal, the smuggling of that drug would stop. According to smokers, that Mexican brick weed is low quality anyway.

So much time, money, and energy is wasted on marijuana related offenses. By legalizing marijuana, we can turn our attention to more violent crimes. Arrest the strong arm robber please, and leave stoners alone. To those who enjoy the herb, I wish you a very happy and "sticky" 4/20!

The only real negative to marijuana is that it is illegal.

Apparently, someone in Detroit agrees with you. He wants to revitalize the city by not enforcing prostitution and by legalizing marijuana.

I’d rather just grow it in my back yard for my own consumption, but if I get caught I lose my job and my career. Guess I’ll just stick to the booze and a good non-Cuban cigar.

Oh, and great article Spinny Liberal. There should be plenty from the red column that agree with you.

Some people have spent many years in jail for relatively small amounts of marijuana. It’s totally absurd.

Btw, I posted this link and these comments over in the Obesity and Gluttony of Corporations thread, but since it applies here too, I thought I’d re-post it:

Here’s a new story from today — again showing how corporations are being given the green light to take over at the complete expense of the public good:
Big Pharma set to take over medical marijuana market

Basically the government is trying to legalize marijuana for big pharma only to sell, while at the same they want to keep laws in place that criminalize marijuana and give long term jail sentences to anyone who grows and/or dispenses the natural substance of the plant itself.
This makes no sense.
And, I never believed I would be seeing things like this happening with the Justice Dept. under Obama — which only highlights how much both of the major political parties have completely abandoned, and are in fact transparently harming We the People, in order to turn this nation into the Corporate States of America.

George - I heard that about Detroit. For me, I’m fine with all that. However, to generate revenue, they should start collecting taxes from the dealers and the hookers. If they’re not independent contractors, time to get the pimps to pay up.

Non-Cuban cigars. Nice. Are they any good? I’ve bought a couple Cohibas (yes, Cuban), but they weren’t for me.

Adrienne - Well, that article was disturbing. Thanks! Haha. Ugh big pharma shouldn’t have the monopoly. What’s going to happen if it gets too expensive and insurance doesn’t cover it? Do we buy online from India (like now)? Haha.

Haha no kidding! And I have no idea why people would even drink that stuff. Might as well down a bottle of rubbing alcohol. Hahaha

Famous quote:

“When I was in England, I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and I didn’t like it. I didn’t inhale and never tried it again.” –Bill Clinton

I believe what we have in America are too many liberals who have burnt up most of their brain cells by smoking pot.

I don’t know. There were boomer hippies who smoked and then became Conservative. So I would say that not only liberals burned their brain cells smoking weed. Equal opportunity frying. ;-)

MC, speaking of fried brain cells, the greatness of America is that you can inhale, snort, and guzzle to your hearts content and still become president.

Might I add that we the people may have been bamboozled about the quality and quantity of the job. lol

After all there is a large quantity of evidence of people who are voted in to represent us and then stand before the cameras while sloshed, slurring, and shit faced pretending they are taking care of business. Who’s business?

Mike,

Pot doesn’t kill brain cells. On the other hand, alcohol very definitely kills brain cells, even in small amounts.
