Worse than Gridlock

For 6 months after Iraqis had a successful election, Americans have watched as ordinary Iraqis waited and waited with increasing dismay because the leaders they voted for could not get together to form a government. And American pundits discuss this situation with alarm. This is baffling. U.S. has been in a situation that is worse than gridlock for a lot more than 6 months and the pundits don’t seem to care.

Vice President Joe Biden went to Iraq to try to smooth things out:

The Obama administration has been reported to be sympathetic to a compromise plan in which Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki might retain his post with somewhat more limited powers while a new council with binding authority would be established under Ayad Allawi, a former interim prime minister and leader of a political coalition that is a rival to Mr. Maliki’s.

Practically everyone agrees this is a good thing. If only the Shiite and the Sunni leaders would stop thinking only of themselves and get together to work with each other to build their country, it would be great for Iraq and for us.

Wonderful! How come we don't follow this logic here in the U.S.? The minute Barack Obama became president, he was attacked by Republicans. They threw at him whatever they could think of, true or false. The resultant chaos was not enough for those on the extreme right, who then threw a tantrum and attacked, not only Democrats, but Republicans. We are faced with something worse than gridlock.

Among all these screamers, who is working for the interests of ordinary Americans? It's not the Republicans in Congress who use the filibuster almost all the time to delay or prevent the enactment of bills - some of which were eventually passed UNANIMOUSLY! Neither is it the so-called Blue Dog Democrats who fought for their own parochial interests and not for the common good of the country. And it is definitely not the Tea Party activists whose goal seems to be complete disruption of our polity. Tea Partiers talk a good line but they will destroy our democracy if we let them.

The one person who has been working all his time in office to try to bridge gaps and to get Democrats and Republicans to work together is the one person who has received the most abominable trash from almost all sides - President Barack Obama. He asked for ideas from both Democrats and Republicans. He wanted to negotiate. Republicans refused and Democrats made negotiations tougher than they needed to be. Despite all these problems, Obama got Congress to pass a universal healthcare bill, a financial regulation bill and an economic recovery bill.

Under a dysfunctional system that is worse than gridlock, President Obama produced more in less than 2 years than any other president in full terms - since FDR.

I find it interesting that Paul credits obama with “production” meaning more government spending and regulation. Just imagine the production he could have achieved without this “dysfunctional system”.

I would guess that with a functional system we would have more government spending and more regulation. Would that be a good thing? If not, why not?

Royal Flush,

A functional system would separate financially sensible decisions from the political process, in my opinion. With such a system we might not have things like earmarks, poor long term economic choices and obstructionism to sensible economic fixes.

I think politics should point us in a direction, but financial choices seems to need more adult, rational limits, and insulation from idiocy.

Is it my imagination, or has oabama turned gray headed in the past 20 months?

Now the question is: should we blame the gray hair on Bush, or should we blame it on the do-nothing republican congress?

Why does Paul use the word “Screamers”? Why not use the word “Shouters”? Just curious…

Beretta,

All of the recent Presidents except “Grecian Formula Ronnie” have had grey hair soon after taking office. it comes with the territory.

The Iraq government is a clone of the U.S. government and the Iraqi people have as much respect for it as Americans have for theirs.

Both governments are in or close to political gridlock. Despite that, the corruption and graft continues unabated, in both countries.

Things are much the same in Afghanistan. Karzai wants all American contractors out of Afghanistan; calling them the major source of corruption.

Billions upon billions of taxpayers dollars down the rat hole of corruption and the well trained partisans are fighting over which of the corrupted parties should be running the government.

Perhaps we should change the name of our country to Moronia.

“The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows that 24% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-seven percent (47%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -23.

That’s the highest level of Strong Disapproval and the lowest Approval Index daily rating yet recorded for this president…Overall, 42% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president’s performance. This matches the lowest approval rating yet measured for President Obama. Fifty-seven percent (57%) now disapprove.”

How much is the tax cuts costing… Making the tax cuts permanent would generate large, backloaded revenue losses over the next 10 years. Combined with a minimal but necessary fix to the government’s Alternative Minimum Tax, making the tax cuts permanent would reduce federal revenues by almost $1.8 trillion over 10 years — and that’s in addition to the $1.7 trillion of revenue losses already locked into law. By 2014, the annual revenue loss would amount to $400 billion, or 2 percent of gross domestic product — almost the size of this year’s federal budget deficit.

· Paying for the tax cuts would require monumental reductions in spending or increases in other taxes. To offset the revenue losses in 2014 would require, for example, a 48 percent reduction in Social Security benefits, a 57 percent cut in Medicare benefits, or a 117 percent increase in corporate taxes

This sums up the republican policy. More war more tax cuts more deficits more misery.
