Republican or Democrat; Neither For Me, Thanks!

The Fourth Amendment assures the right of the people to be secure in their person, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures. It is the most fundamental protection Americans have against the threat of a literal Big Brother breaking down your door and dragging you away to some secret prison. An older generation of Americans saw fit to protect those of the future from the worst abuses any government could device, the complete eradication of individual freedom.

The Fourth Amendment also protects us from the drawing up of warrants, on a whim, without any procedural verification of the document. It says that no warrants shall be issued, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation. The constitution demands any warrant be verified before it is issued so that no single person, or agency, can demand entrance to your home where they can proceed to further strip you of your individual liberties.

The Patriot act is the single most important document in American history, more so than the Constitution because the Patriot Act is, in effect, and practice, an amendment overriding the Fourth Amendment. The Patriot act allows federal officers, agents of the government, to write up warrants outside your door, enter your home, and require you to lie about the event ever taking place. The Patriot act allows the Federal Government to lock you up in prison for revealing, under oath, that you were ever issued any such warrant.

This is what our previous administration did to America. Their complete lack of respect for what this country stands for will, in time, result in the eventual breakdown of individual freedom. But don't think things are going to get better, because our current administration, while venturing into dangerous depths of its own, has not rescinded the Patriot Act.

When one administration has the power to overturn the most monumental abortion of American justice in history, and chooses not to, you have to start wondering if anyone running our country even cares at all. Democrat or Republican, neither would ever consider repealing this “law” because it ensures whomever is in power has complete control over ever individual in the country.

We are now in the middle of an ugly knife fight to “overhaul” the health care system. While steps need to be taken to rein in the unbridled greed of the health care providers, attention must be paid not to allow the central risk of any major reform granting the government absolute power, that absolute power corrupts absolutely. The country lost its mind after September, 11th, and as a result, somehow, the Fourth Amendment was eradicated. While granting complete control over the health care industry to the government wouldn't actually erase any standing rights, it could lead to all manner of abuses. While having such authority would be good in the hands of capable, caring, humane, logical, non-greedy human beings, there is, alas, no such thing. That is why the framers of our country constructed a document that protected the masses of individuals from the wants and desires of a single entity. But those days are gone. And with it, our country.

Good intentions or not, allowing a government that has never been able to successfully manage a single program it ever took control of (although, come to think about it, the CIA, and FBI always seem in tip top shape) would be a hideous disaster. While I agree with the principle of having a unified health care system run not for profit, but solely for the benefit and protection of every American, even those too stubborn to know whats good for them, the current government is not capable of taking on the task. I do not mean specifically the Democrats, but the cadre of vultures that occasionally shifts the reins from red to blue, the same people who have, for generations, tried to help but inevitably fail.

Our country is not capable of running itself. Something is fundamentally broken. As soon as we started letting the government think for us, much like any organization being allowed to mandate behavior, thought, and action of its followers, we became a nation of opportunists and thieves.

“Good intentions or not, allowing a government that has never been able to successfully manage a single program it ever took control of…”

World War 2 seemed to work out. We did put a man on the Moon and NASA has certainly advanced science and indusrty. The Postal system does reliably move a heck of a lot of mail. The interstate highway system is pretty damned good. The actual workings of the Social Security system are highly efficient with a low overhead. Millions of checks get out on time, records are kept. The FDA mostly does a good job keeping harmful drugs off the market. The Agriculture Dept. has done a good job of assisting farmers and help keep food prices relatively stable. The State Dept. beyond its more visable duties runs hundreds of embassies and consulates that are quite helpful to US citizens abroad. The Army Corps of Engineers does amazing work. The Navy does a pretty good job of protecting the sea lanes………..Do they ever screw up? Of course they do,every large human endeavor makes mistakes, misses opportunities etc. For the most part they succeed in their missions. Your statement is factually incorrect and surprisingly simplistic. I would expect that from a grouchy old curmudgeon, waiting for their SS check and complainning about the gubmint or in a Red column rant.

The Patriot Act is worrysome. More significant than the Constitution? Not likely, nor is it the first time such acts were taken in response to war, the Sedition Acts of WW1 ,Lincoln suspending Habeaus Corpus, The Selective Service System are all clearly not Constituional without some really obtuse legal twistings of logic. So far at any rate, after time, cooler heads have prevailed and such acts were reapealed or rendered powerless.
Politics is the art of the possible. Can you imagine the fire storm of attack the BHO adminisrtation would have had to deal with had they chosen to get rid of the Patriot Act, or even change it drastically. Half the mutton head right already thinks he is a closet Muslum terrorist. We have things to accomplish,HC being one of them. Addressing climate change is another. Dealing with the economy is another. Many more pressing problems than picking a losing ,distracting, battle over the Patriot Act,especially when the same constraints on its potential abuses can be gainned by controlling its enforcement on an executive level.

Good response bills, and perhaps you could have mentioned the middle column, where those dissatisfied with both parties are encouraged to voice their opinions.

I’m just saying that the state we are in now, how can anyone have any faith in our government to do what’s right for us? They allowed corporations to have equal rights as individual people, the allow jobs to be sent overseas, and now, after their all in bed with the health insurance industry, they’re going to run it in our best interest, with zero money to pay for it?

The government has the potential to run something like universal health care, but I do not believe, right now, they have the will or moral fortitude to help America. The politicians who run this country are too self interested, and too concerned with power and wealth.

When our elected “representatives” are allowed to set their own wages, have better health care than everyone else, and rule this country however their corporate masters see fit, then no, I don’t believe they are capable of acting in our best interests.

What’s interesting is that in many ways I agree with Republicans, only their motives, in matters such as health care and government intervention, are solely selfish and ideologically driven. The government as it is now should not have such broad control over us. Maybe one that was better reined in and moderated by the people it supposedly represents could act in our best interests.

When the people who run our country get money directly from corporations and industries that do whatever they can to maximize the wealth and happiness of only their 1% of this country, letting everyone else rot and fight amongst themselves, then we do not have the luxury of a functioning government for the people, by the people.

All of us become discouraged now and then, and you are right about corruption and corporate influence on both parties, etc., but here on the left we still have to believe that somewhere out there are caring leaders, who will help save us from the monster the Republicans have built…Mothra anyone?

Mike, I agree with you.

Liberals like to think that the Republicans are destroying themselves because they are not buying into the liberals idea of one party rule within the confines of corpocracy. The exact opposite is true. They have allowed the conservatives to invade the Democratic Party, causing havoc within the party. As a result, the governed are dictated to, told what is best for them. Advice and consent of the governed is no longer an option. They must choose to be dictated to by one party or the other on behalf of capital.

I read a news story yesterday about how Bank America foreclosed on the mortgage of a woman who’s mortgage was paid up. The bank hired goons to go to her house. They cut her electric lines, water lines, stole her pet parrot and bolted her doors shut. Had she done that to the bank, she would be going to prison.

How long will it be before Goon Squads America is a major corporation.

Unfortunately this is not new behavior for corporations. If you get a chance too, read of the railroad monopolies. Not only did you have no choice about who to ship with, you had to wharehouse in there buildings. If anyone built their own wharehouse, the RRs would send goons to burn them. The RRs insisted on seeing a shippers books to determine just how much they could charge and still, maybe, keep them in business. It took the feds, finally,to regulate carriers just as it will take the feds to re-regulate the banks.

Its the Democratic Party that is pushing to reform HC. Its the Dems that are trying to takle carbon emmissions. Its the Dems that are attempting to re-regulate the financial industry. Its the Republicans that are trying to prevent these vital reforms. How obvious do you need it to be? Yes the Dems take corporate money. Do you want them to go to a gunfight with just a knife? The Dems also take most union money. Why? The unions would give to any party that supports working people and the Reps love attacking worker protections almost as much as giving tax breaks to rich people. Point is that until we get public finance, that is how the game is played. Which party is doing a better job for America? Its that simple.
You might go down to your party central committee and see what you can do to change things. You will be welcome but don’t expect them to hang on your every word. If you get involved you will also meet a number of politicians. If your experience is like mine you will find that most of them are genuinly trying to do the right thing and are not bad people. Of course I can only speak for the Dems.
