Donkeys Packing Heat

Of all of the political developments this week, future historians may be most impressed by the fact an aide to Democratic Senator James Webb was arrested trying to bring a loaded gun into the Senate Office Building.

No doubt this is a great day for Democrats. For decades now we have been kicked around as a party of pacifistic girly men. Now one of us has been caught bringing a pistol to work. A loaded pistol. With extra ammo, just to show he wasn't kidding. The only way this could get better is if he shot a dude in the face. (Accidentally, of course!)

This was Michael Dukakis' problem. We all know that he blew it when Bernard Shaw asked him what he would do if his wife Kitty got raped and murdered. He should have pulled out a 357 and promised to introduce the offender to his little friend. Then we never would have heard of "President Bush" (either of them). John Kerry gave it a good try with his hunting trip in Ohio, but that just didn't cut it. Real men have to be ready to use their gun in self-defense (wink wink), or to exact vigilante justice on a killer or pervert.

So there we have it, Democratic candidates. We need someone to prove that they are ready and willing to use their 2nd Amendment rights. Will Hillary bring a gun to the Hill? Is Barack ready to put the BAM in Obama? Is John Edwards ready to face down a mugger and muss his pretty hair? Lock and load, boys and girls. It's time to show America how we roll.

Too funny…Maybe it’s time to give those GOPers some 2nd ammendment pay back! Although my bet is far more of them than expected would like the barrel of a doublebarrel strategically inserted in their Constitution. Gerbils would cost extra.

I thought all of us liberal, softies buried all the guns in a bottomless pit along with the second amendment. Who found them?
Does this mean that us liberal. intellectual, homosexual loving, abortion promotors can get those “Kill’em All Let God Sort Them Out” bumper stickers?

Now that is funny Andre, good one.

Also a democrat who’s aide broke D.C. law. Isn’t this an example of don’t do as I do but do as I say. And the Senator is the owner of the gun. His excuse is I can protect myself the way I want. What BULLSH_T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t see anything to be outraged about. It looks like the guy made a mistake, and he has already spent the night in jail. So far it looks like he is being held accountable for actions.

Webb has never pretended to be in favor of gun control. The fact that he own guns is not a revelation.

Personally, I don’t really give a s%^t about the gun issue anymore. There are too many guns in this country to try to outlaw them.

I don’t see a problem with someone who has a license owning a handgun. I challenge anyone to prove otherwise.

I believe that it is bad for someone to bring a gun into a federal building, but it appears in this case that it was an accident. I would be surprised if any jury could be convinced that this man was trying to smuggle a gun in, but if that happens I won’t complain.

I actually get tired of hearing from both sides that we have to fit into a perfect package to call ourselves by a certain title.
I think we have come really close to a point where we are going to have to find some common ground and peace together. We won’t need any outside influences to destroy us, we will have mastered that by ourselves.

Although I’m not a Republican, I think most on here are clamoring for equal treatment under the law. Doesn’t matter to me if it jaywalking or grand theft, we are all equally liable for our actions.

Also I see a little hypocracy from the left who so strongly support gun control laws and now are deafeningly quiet on this matter. But you knew that.

tomd,

Actually, at least one gun control activist has already criticized Webb.

Peter Hamm, a spokesman for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said Webb “really should take responsibility for this.”

“He should be ashamed of himself,” Hamm said. “His aide is facing legal bills up the wazoo.”

Webb “should say it was a mistake and that it was my mistake,” he added.

Link:http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/03/27/webb.aide.gun/index.html

I think it a bit premature to blame Webb for what happened, but there you are. Gun control activists are NOT all looking the other way.

Of course, if this guy were a Republican, the liberals here would be screaming for a felony conviction, Congressional hearings, and impeachment of the President for his “Rovian plot” to intimidate Democrats with firearms in the hallowed halls of Congress.

Unfortunately, that’s not an exaggeration. It’s exactly what would happen.

Jrb, no Republican could get caught with a loaded firearm in Congress and get charged with anything less than conspiracy and attempted murder.

And perhaps they’d even be charged with actual murder. Who knows? We’ve seen higher mountains made of smaller molehills.

I can see it now. The prosecutor would insist that whether or not anyone was actually shot with that gun is irrelevant to conducting a murder investigation over several years.

Perhaps the Democrats could even get Valerie Plame to testify before Congress that SHE was the one murdered. Nothing would surprise me anymore.

Posted by: jrb at March 27, 2007 10:49 PM
Comment #214085

I don’t think I’m stretching at all.

In recent times, we’ve seen the Democrats raise hell over so-called breeches of “national security” in a case which was actually a perjury case with no underlying crime.

This occurred while a former Clinton aide was stealing, hiding, and shredding classified documents with nary a peep of protest and partisan leakers were feeding details of classified anti-terrorism efforts (which were perfectly legal, despite accusations to the contrary) to the New York Times, which published them on the front page.

Considering the number of wild and irresponsible accusations thrown at Republicans in recent years, I’m sure that any Republican caught trying to bring a loaded gun into Congress would be accused of attemted murder and conspiracy at the very least. And it would be insinuated that Karl Rove was behind it all. And probably Dick Cheney.

After all, those guys are evil Republican liars and murderers. What true blue Democrat could even doubt that they were behind this gun-smuggling operation? “When did Bush know about the gun, and when did he know it?”

I like the way you wrote that. I needed a smile and you supplied it.

I would say this on a semi-serious slant; Webb forgot he’s playing for the blue team! The red team carries all the time! They’re “locked & loaded”!

Webb’s response should have been, “oops, forgot I’m playing for the other team now”.

Until the onset of my disability I hunted (especially deer). I’m a gun collector. There is no reason not to register ownership of guns! The greatest threat to gun ownership has been this nonsense of increased “concealed carry” in many states.

Of course only time will tell, but I think we’ll eventually see a time when the liberalization of gun control will come back to bite us all in the ass. Uh oh! Did I suggest that the Republicans were too liberal?

LO,

The incident with Sandy Berger happened entirely during the Bush administration, so if you think he got off too easy you need to complain to them.

I hope the prosecutors DO go after Webb. It sounds like the worse possible crime you could pin on Webb is possessing a gun in DC. (Even that is a stretch, since he wasn’t caught with one.) Webb would just say he needs it to defend himself. I’m sure his popularity in Virginia would go through the roof.

If he actually went to jail, that would be even better. He would be 2nd Amendment martyr, and Tim Kaine (D) could name his replacement.

As Machiavelli (the GOP patron saint), makes clear, there are no limits to retaining power. What patriotic Americans need to be vigilant about now is the asassiation of non-GOP, majority Americans.

Hmmmm?
2nd Amendment- right of the people to keep and bear arms.
The people had that right for a 100+ years.
Then the people gave up that right and allowed govt to take it from us because of their fears.
Now, our right is regulated and we must get permission to exercise that “right.”

KDem, going by what has happened to this right, the political definition of “liberal-ization” that you speak of must mean slowly giving up a right until it is totally gone.
So, you are correct, the “liberal-ization” of this right will come back to bite us on the ass. Especially when our other rights start to disappear and we can no longer do anything about it.

Webbs aide made a mistake. Follow the law and treat him as any other would be treated.
