Veterans May Be Contaminated!
Health Alert: Prostate Biopsy Devices Used By The VA May Have Been Contaminated This notice applies to all Veterans who may have received prostate biopsies at Veterans hospitals between 1997 and 2001. It is possible that you have been infected with Hepatitis B, C, or HIV. Apparently there are questions about the adequacy of the sterilization techniques for the BK Biopsy Transducer devices. The VA will provide testing and follow up with those possibly infected.
The news on this is coming out piecemeal across the country, so please pass the information on.
This is an absolutely outrageous situation. First, that they utilized this device for four years and didn't catch the problem, and then that it took them another five years to figure it out. This is beyond negligence.
In searching for news reports on this, it is coming out in local news with no overall figures of Veterans possibly impacted. What numbers I could find were:
Portland, Or. 2200
Contra Costa 30,000
Tennessee 413
Rochester NY no number given.
According to the ContraCosta Times (the most informative article I found) the problem period could stretch from 1985 to April 2006. Twenty-one VA hospitals used the device. There is no single number for Veterans to call for more information. If you are possibly impacted by this, then I would recommend calling your closest Veterans Hospital , or the VA where you had the prostate biopsy done. VA officials quoted in the various articles state that the risk of infection is low but possible.
Posted by Rowan Wolf at May 11, 2006 09:27 AMOur priority is to keep the deficit down and the government small. Spending taxpayer dollars on these people will subtract the resources we have to fight the Global War on Terror. We don’t even know if this is real!!! There are numerous Liberal Groups out there exploiting our brave Veterans. This is probably just another scam to get charity.
Do not worry. Our veterans are well paid for their services. We do not need to increase spending for them. The VA is fully capable of handling this themselves.
Posted by: Aldous at May 11, 2006 10:15 AMAs a veteran who’s used the VA medical centers for years, I’ve personally never had a problem with them, and I always correct ignorant people who claim the VA hospitals are substandard or staffed by lower quality personnel.
The fact is, if this situation is unfolding in the VA hospitals, it’s going on in the civillian hospitals as well. VA hospitals are ‘open’, required by law to publicly announce all errors, deaths, investigations… everything civillian hospitals sweep under the rug and keep quiet, the VA publishes in press releases.
As for Aldous, I’m guessing from his post he’s not a veteran, and has never participated in the so-called ‘Global War on Terror’. Personally, I’d rather my taxes pay for the VA hospitals than some mismanaged, bungled, tragically comical ‘war’ on terror that’s made America the most hated nation on earth, and increased our enemies a hundred fold. I don’t care for your tone, in referring to veterans as ‘these people’, either. And for your information, veterans are paid absolutely NOTHING for their ‘services’… what is that supposed to mean, anyway? What ‘payments’ do veterans recieve? ‘Well paid’ with what? How? Because I don’t seem to be getting my check, and no veteran I know [and I know alot] is getting ‘well paid’ for his ‘services’.
I’m pretty laid back, and generally don’t respond to people who spout foolishness on other topics, but when an ignoramus opens his mouth and attacks veterans, I’ll always be first in line to correct him.

Don’t take Aldous seriously. He’s the Blue Column’s giver of Modest Proposals, if you catch my drift. What’s scary is that people sometimes can’t tell the difference between his satire and the Right’s sincerity.
Aldous
Can’t you ever just let it go?
This is a potentially serious thing. Since it happened over different administrations, it is not particularly political. It is a good notice, just let it go.

How very, very true.

Jesse…..I’d like to either shake your hand or give you a hug ! whichever would be more appropriate. You’re so right to point out that this is a potential concern for all health care facilities. Thanks..
Jack….thank you, too.
Aldous, your statement was even over the edge for you….!
Risk of infection low but possible could mean a one out of a million chance. And I’m not sure that your conclusion of ‘beyond incompetence’ would stand up to whatever the facts are. Those who don’t make mistakes are those that don’t do anything.
Posted by: Schwamp at May 11, 2006 12:33 PMJesse, you are right that our VA system is probably the best shape its been since the years following the Viet Nam War. But, as a veteran who had to use the VA after the end of the Viet Nam war, there was a time when the VA was a shambles and a nightmare for some of its veterans. I remember waiting in the lounge to see a doctor 4 hours was not uncommon at the San Antonio VA. And bitching about the service and the conditions was all there was to do in the waiting area amongst many of us. And there was plenty to bitch about, the smell at times being the least of these.
They were horrendously understaffed. Nixon and Ford budget cuts as I recall.

I am one of those who depend on the V.A. for my health care needs. Although I have had some minor problems with my doctor, over all I would rate the quality of care I have received very good to excellent and far superior to the local hospitals in my area.
Oh… A Modest Proposal… Swift… gotcha I didn’t know Aldous served that function here, and you’re correct, it sounds exactly like what a sincere right winger would say and believe. Fooled me.
