Deficit Reduction, Republican Style

President Bush told Congress that it is spending too much money and it should cut the deficit. After Katrina, the Republican Congress finally agreed with the president and decided that it needed to cut spending to bring the budget closer to balance. So now the House is considering cutting programs affecting the poor - who else could Republicans pick on? What they are coming up with will have negligible effect on the deficit but will hurt the most vulnerable among us grievously. This is deficit reduction, Republican style.

The Republicans plan a $54 billion cut over 5 years in:

  • Welfare
  • Medicaid
  • Student Loans
  • Child Support Enforcement
  • Food Stamps
They do not cut any program that benefits people with money. As a matter of fact, they are keeping the huge tax cuts.

Just cutting the Estate Tax, which Republicans call the Death Tax, would reduce government income by $986 billion over 20 years. No Republican wants to touch this. This is sacred.

Effectively, Republicans want to penalize the poor in order to reward the rich. And none of this will reduce the deficit significantly.

Remember when Republicans hounded Democrats because of what they called "tax and spend" policies? True conservatives would say today's Republicans believe in "borrow and spend." Democrats go further; they say today's Republicans are reverse Robin Hoods: They "take from the poor and give to the rich."

Republican style deficit reduction is a farce. It's time they treated poor and middle class people as well as they do the rich. They are all Americans.
