What is Lincoln Thinkin'?
The New York Times reported today that GOP Sen. Lincoln Chafee will not be voting for Bush this fall. They also have an interesting comment from Sen. Jim “My Favorite Republican Since That Other Lincoln” Jeffords:
“I understand the feelings that he has,” Mr. Jeffords said. “I’m going to be talking to him, so I’m not going to say any more. I probably shouldn’t have even told you that.”
Well, it is pretty clear what Jeffords has in mind. As for whether Chafee will bite, we can only hope. The NYT states that "Mr. Chafee insists he has no intention of defecting", but one would not expect him to telegraph his inclinations before he decides. Loyalty is apparently important to Chafee, so maybe he will wait until he is up for re-election in 2006 to switch parties. One would certainly expect him to wait and see if the Dems take over without his help.
By the way, the latest Gallup poll shows Bush and Kerry TIED 49-49. Not bad for an unlikeable, French-looking liberal, eh?Posted by Woody Mena at October 4, 2004 9:25 AM
