Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics

Has anyone else noticed how George W. Bush seems to have a knack for making things up to support his agenda, knowing that while the media will be all over the initial news, they will only cover the revised story in passing?

Bush went on TV last spring stating that “Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised” and that because of this they were an imminent threat to American security. Using this justification, he led us into a war in which 500 American troops have lost their lives and no WMDs have been found. Bush so much as admitted this, and then again used his latest justification for war in Iraq—the liberation of the Iraqi people.

In December, Bush signed into law the Medicare Prescription Drug Modernization Act amid protests from numerous groups who felt the bill did not provide the coverage necessary while at the same time enriching drug companies, HMO's and health insurance companies. According to the CNN article, "While hunting for the votes they needed to nudge the bill through, Bush and administration officials as well as top congressional Republicans told wavering conservatives they believed the bill's costs would track the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office's $395 billion estimate." Yet only 6 weeks after signing the bill, the cost somehow had risen to $534 billion. How does that happen? Did they screw up the estimates that badly? Were they outright lying in order to get the bill passed? $134 is no little slip up!

Bush's latest lie to the American public concerns what may be the key issue in the upcoming election -- jobs. Last week, the White House released a jobs report estimating that 2.6 new jobs will be created this year. In fact the administration then implied the figure was actually going to be 3.8 million jobs! Yet this week the White House backed away from even the 2.6 million jobs prediction.

So it's not OK to lie about receiving a blowjob--that'll get you impeached. But it is OK to lie about WMD's, medicare plan costs and job creation? Am I missing something?
