They've caught Saddam.
It appears that Saddam Hussein has been arrested (source: BBC. other sources).
According to other news reports, there does appear to have been a DNA match made; and although, at this point, it’s a good idea to remain skeptical, it appears that American forces have Saddam Hussein in custody.
This in-depth report on the capture by the BBC says that:
Searching the compound, troops discovered a tiny ‘spider hole’ camouflaged with bricks and dirt. At about 2030, they entered the hole and found Saddam Hussein hiding at the bottom.Posted by Thomas Scott at December 14, 2003 09:34 AMThe former Iraqi leader had secreted himself about 6-8ft underground in a chamber barely large enough to allow a person to lie down.
No shots were fired during the operation, and Saddam Hussein offered no resistance.
Congratulations to George W. Bush on his victory next November. It’s a lock, and if they get Osama he will be crowned.
Posted by: Scorch at December 14, 2003 10:07 AMThe capture of Saddam will prove to be a turning point in public perception of Bush and the war effort. It will become harder and harder for Dean to push his anti-war position in middle America, and help Clark and Kerry push their principled support for the war.
This will be the start of the end for Dean.
Posted by: Ari at December 14, 2003 10:26 AMI wouldn’t go that far - this is certainly going to be a huge boost for Bush, but there’s a long year ahead yet.
And let’s not forget that there still aren’t any weapons of mass destruction found - the original justification for the war is still missing.
Posted by: Thomas Scott at December 14, 2003 11:45 AMWhile this will no doubt be an imediate boost to Bush I think that it will only be a short term gain.
If people actually think that the attacks will stop or decrease they are being fools. There are plenty of groups fighting under the basis of getting the US out, not to restore Saddam to power. And now that Saddam is gone, their attacks may become more reckless and damaging since the fear of him coming back may now be quelled.
Next, if people are actually so shallow as to vote a man into office again on the basis that he achieved one part of one goal out of many, than the country is in trouble. Iraq is not controlled, Afganistan is once again going to become a battlefield, the economy is a mess, the no child left behind program is not even in existence, and we have angered countries which have generally been our allies.
Everyone is looking for short-term gains and then always suprised with things do not turn our okay.
Posted by: Adam at December 14, 2003 12:11 PMlisten to you libs, noone yet has said they are glad that he has been captured. All you are worried about is that Bush looks better because of this. It is really sad. It really is true that you see this as BAD news.
Posted by: mr. fabulous at December 14, 2003 12:39 PMOh whatever… if we caught Osama, THAT would be something to celebrate. Adam and Thomas are 100% right; the American deaths (not to mention Iraqi civilians) will continue, the WMDs will still not be there and the jobless economic recovery will still be a big joke. Capturing Saddam is almost moot. He was pretty much out of the picture the day we took Bagdad; this is just the trophy that blood thirsty conservativs can rally over… and in three weeks, another news story will come along to replace the hoopla…
Posted by: jesse at December 14, 2003 02:45 PMI see it as very good news, and I am a Democrat. I couldn’t help but smile as I heard the news, as much as I knew this would help Bush.
But Bush does not have a free ride yet.
He will most certainly have to deal with the thorny issue of Saddam’s fate. If he’s smart, he’ll encourage A life jail term. Better an old man humanely rotting away in some six by eight cell, than a martyred fearless leader, betrayed to his death.
With Saddam captured, Bush’s policies will be put to the test over the next few months as well. If he fails to establish a stable order in Iraq, He will have no one else to blame but the terrorists, who were not there in great numbers to begin with before the invasion.
He’s won the war as far as capturing the leader, and pushing the enemy out of power, but if he cannot solidify the control of the territory into friendly hands, it will not reflect well on him. Everybody loves a winner, but nobody loves a man who screws up their victories.
Posted by: Stephen Daugherty at December 14, 2003 03:10 PMThe capture of Hussein is a very significant symbolic moment. The world can rejoice at the picture of a captured dictator.
It can be the beginning of a great moment in international justice, but this will take work. It would be easy to (metaphorically) parade him about the streets and let everyone throw stones at him. But the Iraqis deserve a fair trial of Saddam Hussein. This trial should not only discern what crimes the dictator was involved in, but who his acomplices were, that they may also come to justice.
This should be a focus for the Democrats, because such a trial would reinforce the fact that Hussein was supported and armed heavily by the Reagan administration, many of which have recently worked to overthrow him. Iraqis have suffered for many years, and those responsible should be brought to justice.
Posted by: Trevor Stone at December 14, 2003 03:36 PMBush will use this to his advantage, but the point that the war was wrong is still as valid as ever.
Finding Saddam is another chapter in a very bad time of US history.
Dean’s anti-war message still rings true.
Remember, we did not go to liberate Iraq — that’s the revisionist W. history. We went for WMD. And that was a lie.
Bush remains as bad for America as he ever was.
Do I care that Saddam is out of power? Nope. Means nothing to the US. Never did. Only meant something to the oil men.
It is a LIE people!
Posted by: Jonesy at December 15, 2003 10:27 AMlisten, why cant you people just be happy about catching Saddam. a few weeks ago, anyone would have begging for this to happen, and now that it does, it just something else for people to complain about. im sick and tired of hearing about how bad Bush is for this country. He has proved to be an outstanding man for the job. i thank God every day for being blessed by living in this country. i am THANKFUL that we have soldiers fighting for our freedom. and i am tired of you people who take that for granted. if you think its that bad living here, how about you go live in a 3rd world country, and see just how much you like that. Americans are truly blessed with what we have and its about time we act like it.
