Green and Pleasant (And Slightly Hostile) Land

Things are getting a little tense over here in England.

As I write this, President Bush is on an aeroplane somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean. In a few short hours he’ll land at London’s Heathrow airport (UPDATE 1900 UK time: in fact, he’s now landing at the Royal Air Force base at Northolt), be driven (UPDATE: helicoptered) to Buckingham Palace, and receive a private welcome from the Queen.

…along with, most likely, several thousand protesters outside the Palace gates.

Throughout his stay - the current itinerary of which can be found in the sidebar of this news report, he’ll be flanked by almost half of the entire Metropolitan Police. But don’t worry, everything’s perfectly under control; there’s only been one major security breach so far.

It’s going to be a very interesting few days for the President, the Prime Minister, the protesters and – of course – the media. If anything major happens, I’ll keep this weblog updated.

I was fascinated watching the demonstration speakers in London on C-span. I was especially impressed to see American medal winner and Viet Nam Vet Ron Kovic as one of the speakers. Tom Cruise played him in the movie Born on the 4th of July.
