And We're Back to Nine

So Bob Graham is the first to officially step down from the pack. His decision should be commended. Though I think he should have told his campaign staff before he told Larry King.

Who knows who is going to drop out next. My vote is Lieberman or Braun.

I doubt either Lieb or Braun will drop out at this point - I think they’re both in it for the long haul, for different reasons. Braun never got in it with any intention of winning - she’s there to give voice to her issues, make them part of the platform. Usually there’s one or two candidates in every primary who are on the ballot for that reason - Pat Robertson running for the Republican nomination back in the day comes to mind.

Lieberman, though his numbers are slipping, I don’t think will drop out because he’s - well, I think he’s on a trip from beiong the VP nominee last time around - and ‘cause Gore/Lieb beat Bush/Chen in the popular vote. He’s still towards the top as far as name recognition goes - odd, with Dean and Clark making all this news lately, the general public still doesn’t know who the heck they are.

My guess? Edwards is next and he goes out endorsing whoever the DNC wants pushed. Why Edwards? ‘cause I couldn’t think of anyone to match him up with in THE BIG 92-04 MATCHUP SPECTACULAR:

The top tier:
A socially liberal, fiscally conservative, to the right of the DNC on gun control, as our frontrunner - Tsongas / Dean
In second place, a Rhodes Scholar from Arkansas with the initials WC - Clinton / Clark
In third place, a guy whose name sounds like “Keree” - Kerrey / Kerry

The rest of the pack:
A left-leaning moderate from the midwest with a populist image - Harkin / Gephardt
A lefty insurgent who no one’s really paying attention to except the far left - Brown / Kucinich
A lot of hype surrounding a “candidate” who’s not even running - Cuomo / H. Clinton
An annoying moderate midget - Perot / Lieberman

From this we can predict:
1992: The race started with Tsongas as front runner, taking NH, with Clinton right behind. By the end of the election, it was Clinton v. Brown, but Brown was painted as a loony by the media so it never was much of a contest. Cuomo gives speech at convention that knocks people’s socks off.

2004: It starts off with Dean as the front runner, taking NH, with Clark right behind. By the end of the election, it’s Clark v. Kucinich (because all the lefties who jumped on the Dean bandwagon will have, at that point, switched alliegance after realizing Dean is arguably the furthest to the right of the candidates. Except Lieberman, who’s a Republican, anyway…) - and it won’t be much of a contest because Kucinich doesn’t need to be painted a loony by the media. He’s more than happy to paint himself. Hilary Clinton gives speech at the convention that… well, doesn’t quite cause sock removal.

As I Dean supporter I can assure you that there will be no ditching of Dean for Kucinich. We will back Dean until he quits or wins.

The two aren’t even comparable. Dean’s much more moderate than Dennis the Menace.

The Dems will back another moderate, even the lefties who have learned their lesson from 2000.
