Plame Scandal Overblown?

Is the current hoopla surrounding the outing of Valerie Plame overblown and a manufactured crisis? Sparkey at SSDB thinks that the issue is overblown and that former ambassador Wilson is grinding an axe with respect to the Bush administration. Furthermore, Matt Drudge is reporting that Novak denies that administration officials called him to out Plame. Finally, an interesting analysis was posted online at Pejmanesque. What exactly is going on here? Is this a bona fide crisis, or is the CIA using the Dept. of Justice to deflect the blame for outing Plame itself? Thoughts? Ideas?

“Wilson never worked for the CIA, but his wife, Valerie Plame, is an Agency operative on weapons of mass destruction.” July 14? article

Come on, Novak must have known his wife was some kind of secret agent. You don’t use the word “operative” to describe someone looking at files on a computer or equally mundane work.

Novak seems to be reversing direction and trying to absolve his sources of blame for telling Novak that Plame was an operative.

I think Novak got a little phone call today, I bet it would be interesting to subpoena the call records. For some of you out there who think that asking Novak to divulge his sources is infringing on freedom of the press, there is an exception when the writer is engaging in illegal acts that would not have otherwise been broken if the writer was involved. The blame also lies with Novak.

Actually from what I have read she is an “analyst”….with the emphasis on “anal”
This is just another conspiracy theory. Noone will burn over this. At least I don’t think so…hmmmm? I dunno, maybe it is another white…er , I mean RIGHT wing conspiracy. Time will tell if Republicans are truly as evil as I am.
Crap, did I just say that out loud?

pete, she is a defacto covert operative. Outing her is treasonous, I don’t care if it was the Easter Bunny, letting this slide could get our people killed for political retribution (which is exactly what this is).

Your blasé attitude is not suprising though. I’ll be sure to throw it back in your face the next time you get worked up over some Democrat scandal.

And it’s not the Democrats who started this investigation. The CIA is pissed that someone from the WH outed one of their agents. Get your facts straight.

Having reread Novak’s column, I don’t see the necessity of including any of the info about his wife. He obviously had the credentials to be selected for such a mission without spousal promotion. Novak could have simply stated that officals recommended him for the assignment.

As as to those who question the true nature of the risk associated with the leak because she’s only an analyst, doesn’t it seem likely that not all would know what her “true” position is within the CIA? Don’t you think that she’d need some sort of plausible cover when people ask, “so what do you do?” at cocktail parties, etc.? Oh, I’m a government analyst…

This is not like Bush had sex with an intern and lied about it. This is a National Security violation and is actual Treason not just Ann Coulter “all hippies + Treason” bull but the real kind that hopefully will end with justice being done.

Blowing cover of CIA - no biggie
Blowing President — Let’s impeach

Pull up a chair, Swifty, we’re gonna watch Bush squirm. Got a cold one, for me? It’s gonna be a long winter.

The anti-American right is at it again, trying to get more Americans killed, as if our brave soldiers in Iraq weren’t enough.

I love your commentary, Swifty.
Bret-
You are obviously a man of thoughtful substance as well.
What do you know about “brave soldiers”?
Answer: not a damn thing, Swifty.

Pete,

That’s right, I’m supposed to have long hair, smoke pot, and be out flinging dirty diapers at soldiers’ coffins and kicking crutches out from beneath veterans. How confusing this must be for you that I have the soldiers’ interests in mind, and don’t see them as tools to be sacrificed for oil and a $60 Halliburton stock price.

Pete,

It is only when a person does not have ideas of their own to combat those of others, that they reach for insults. That being said, I would combat your ideas with those of my own, if you actually had any, and weren’t so busy trashing other posters at will.

If you actually took a moment to reflect on your behavior toward your “fellow Americans”, you would be (or should be) ashamed.

Whatever happened to a free exchange of ideas, where a person did not have to risk being called derogatory names for expressing their thoughts? Or is such a “radical” thought way too “granola” and “leftist” for you?

One of the most repuganat things is watching people so IN LOVE with an ideology that they lose all perspective when some things go sour.

This CIA thing is not a partisan issue, no matter how hard the RNC blows. This is treason. And six reporters know who did it.

Time to blow the doors off the Bush regime and get them out in 2004.

NPR’s “All Things Considered” reported—though surely didn’t scoop (but I haven’t seen it elsewhere)—that the White House had asked for a day before they sent out the memo to save all the files. An unidentified federal prosecutor apparently told an NPR reporter he didn’t see why the White House needed that extra day to comply.

It’s just another interesting tidbit.

And no one seems to being paying much attention to Novak’s column though, if things are as he says, though if it were true this story would be dead in the water.

In the early days after 9/11 there was a kind of brotherhood, a non-partisan atmosphere in which people were committed to getting things done. But as time went on, it seemed less important that the right things be done, and more important that certain agendas be fulfilled. I have had my fill of Republican arrogance over issues of national security, fiscal responsibility, and regulatory authority. I think the Republicans are trying to force major shifts in the distribution and amount of power at the precise time at which we have the least room for error in such matters.

I admire the Armed Forces. I have no problem with proper military action. I do not think that peace will always be possible or conscionable. But I do not think men and women should die because somebody wants to vindicate a foreign policy that’s failing miserably to do its job.

I do not think this country should endure another round of humiliations because this administration got sloppy doing it’s homework. I also don’t think that we should continue to allow Bush more chances to diplomatically shoot us in the foot.

The whole outing of Valerie Plame is one more demonstration of this administrations willingness to destroy our ability to keep our nation secure in their quest to preserve their ideal of that security.
