What Hath Blogs Wrought?
I had noticed the growing faux blogging (registration required) trend among the Democratic candidates and was trying to put something together but now don’t have to. Maureen Dowd covered it perfectly in today’s New York Times.

Posted by: Jake of 8bitjoystick.com at August 13, 2003 02:24 PMDemocrats like the Internet and blogs because the GOP has a mediaopoly and it is one of the only way that they can get their message out with out it being perverted by Fox and MSNBC.
Also Al Gore did invent the Internet.
Posted by: Jake of 8bitjoystick.com at August 13, 2003 02:33 PMAnd here I was thinking “Will no one mention Al Gore inventing the Internet?”. Thanks for not letting me down.
Posted by: Stephen VanDyke at August 13, 2003 02:56 PMI personally found Dowd’s column snide and silly. She picked up a meme from the Online Journalism Review and confused “candidate” blogs with “campaign” blogs, then went off on a tear.
That’s too easy. That’s money for nothin’ and your hunks for free.
She still doesn’t understand the nature of the campaign blog, and neither do most other analysts. In a TV campaign you’re in the audience. With a blog you’re in the game.
Get in the game
Posted by: Dana Blankenhorn at August 13, 2003 04:49 PMI think that Dowds column was kind of making fun of how utterly boring those blogs are. Now I must go forth and read them. Oh why do I do this to myself?
Posted by: pete at August 13, 2003 05:25 PMSorry Pete. I figured you needed something to do after midnight to keep you busy ;o) No need to thank me.
And Dana - spoken like a true blog veteran. The point is that most of the campaign’s purport that these are candidate blogs — and they are not (exception: Kucinich). I’m not sure what you might think of Maureen Dowd - but “silly” she isn’t. My only criticism is that she should have linked to the blogs she mentioned. And it does make me wonder - is there anyone that meets your high editorial standards?
Posted by: 9thwave at August 13, 2003 08:07 PMIs this a blog? It looks like a message board but I know I must be missing something. Can somebody explain the difference?
Posted by: Brien Housand at August 14, 2003 01:46 AMBrien: Watchblog is a group blog. (Sometimes it’s a mob blog.)
A sizable group of people writes (and edits) these items, then posts them. Anyone who reads them (like you) is then free to comment on them.
The comment sections are a message board attached to the group blog.
Hope this helps.
