Interesting Chart of Presidential Approval Ratings
This chart plots the presidents’ approval ratings across their terms in office, going back as far as Carter.
Two things I find interesting when examining the chart:
- The strong correlation of Clinton’s and Reagan’s approval ratings throughout each’s two terms in office
- The huge spikes in both Bush’s approval ratings followed by consistent, dramatic declines
Our current president saw a huge jump in his approval rating following Sep. 11, and then experienced a continual slide until the start of Gulf War II gave him another boost. His approval ratings are again sliding rapidly. Does this trend continue, or will he benefit from another event that commands support? Is another terrorist attack or another event which he belives justifies sending in troops the best thing that could happen to him as we head into the election season?
Very interesting. The first thing I noticed is that Clinton’s marks are better in years 6-8 than the Gippers, even though Clinton’s bird was the topic du jour. Despite the Reagan myth, it is nice to see the truth of his numbers.
More American’s approved of the guy the GOP was defaming than they did of Great Miscommunicator. Stunning!
Now, back to the decline of the second treasonist Bush. It should come as no shock. He’s followed daddy’s prescription of lies and war. I wonder if he will send Osama a thank you, because without 9/11, Bush II would have been mince meat long ago (yes, I know that is tasteless, but given how close the Bush and Bin Laden’s are, you never know who sends who a Hallmark now and then).
If the reports leaked today about how Al Qaeda is regrouping because of the US being distracted in Iraq, then I bet Bush II’s numbers will slide further. Cursor.org has a link today to a report about how one Al Queda operative was in the CIA’s sights, but had to be let go because all the Predator drones were in Iraq. Nice.
Now, the task is clearly laid out for the Democrats to take advantage of this decline and ensure Bush II ends up with Carter’s numbers. Unlike Carter, Bush II should also end up as Martha Stewart’s neighbor in prison, but the chances of that justice happening are slim to none…
So, what will get the Dems a win?
1. Hope Bush II gets an illicit blowjob and then denies it. That’s a very serious crime in America.
2. Seriously… the 16 words, 28 pages, 45 minutes and xxxx tons of WMD need to be packaged in one easy to swallow scandal… like Fox did with Laci and Jon Benet Jovi.
3. Howard Dean needs to connect with the farmers and rural citizens in the red states like he did in Vermont. Even if the ticket turned out to be Gore/Dean, Dean’s rural sensibility could propel the Dems.
4. Get Leiberman out of the race and gagged ASAP. The last thing the Dems need is someone so off-message. I would gladly pay with fees to resubmit his papers as a Republican.
5. Find the person in the Bush Administration that will be the easiest to bring up on perjury or treason charges and pursue that one case with vigor. The house of cards will tumble.
6. Hope Tony Blair fails to squelch the truth in Britian. The British today released info that the CIA had many, many objections to what Bush has said, and Blair, too. See cursor.org for links.
7. Take the coattails of the Blair scandal and slide them under Condi Rice. She’s the easy target of the cabinet. And would somebody please stop saying how she was picked for her smarts??? She was on the board of Chevron! She’s another oil industry veteran like the rest of them.
8. Find one reporter with balls to not stop asking tough questions until they are answered.
9. Undermine the religious zealots pulling the GOP strings while hoping Bush continues down the homophobic path, which will cost him and GOP gay vote (and they are out there).
10. Get Dean on the ticket. Get Lieberman out of the race.

I can’t understand why you think Dean has a snowballs chance. He is the most far left of the bunch and isn’t even trying to hide it. I was saying that Edwards had the best chance of winning at first because he is a successfull lawyer but now i am not sure. His property tax records are out now and it appears he has been late on his taxes 9 times. He lives in a 3.8 million dollar home and pays only 9,000 per year in taxes. Surely someone will jump all over him for that.
Lieberman can never win because he is Jewish and there are a lot of anti-semites in the world still.
Posted by: pete at July 31, 2003 07:07 PMPete,
How many anti-semites vote democrat anyway? Not very many… And in polls conducted during the past election didn’t seem to be much of an issue.
Posted by: blipsman at July 31, 2003 07:17 PMI would like to point out the anti-Israel slant that cost the Democrats Florida in the last election. The base is eroding and only the powerful elite Jews in Hollywood are on track with the rest of the party. Anti-semetic behavior in this country is now the playground of the left.
Posted by: pete at July 31, 2003 10:00 PMAs a Democrat there are so many other reasons to ditch Lieberman than just religion but it is still a factor.
Posted by: Jake of 8bitjoystick.com at August 5, 2003 05:54 PMIf you look at the statistics from meetup.com, Dean’s grassroots support is growing *exponentially*. He’s not as far left as people like to paint him as, either. Governors also have a much better track record at getting elected.
Posted by: barry at August 8, 2003 06:41 PMI want to echo the comments of Robbie. I only take issue with one word in his comments but not because I don’t agree with him. I agree that the behavior of this administration is analogous to treason and Bush, God willing, should be shown his walking papers. I have some concerns with the use of the word “treason” however. Ever since Ann Coulter published her book I am seeing that word more and more often and, of course, I think we agree that her use of the term is hyperbole. She knows it too but would never admit it. Prior to her book, to accuse someone of treason was to charge them with something that, to my feeble mind anyway, was above a charge of murder. Treason was (and should remain) a capital offense. The word is reserved of the most heinous of crimes, spoken in hushed and somber tones. And yes, I do think that Bush is guilty of treason, based on the fact that our young people are dying to prop up his lies. Coulter’s use of the term however has cheapened the charge and diminished it’s resonance. She used it cheaply and falsely and took away it’s sting. The outcome? If and when pundits and commentators accuse Bush of treason, the weight of the term is gone and so is the need to act against the traitor. Sadly, prior to this administration I can’t imagine ever applying that term to a president.
I want to respond also to Pete’s comment. I want to invite you to learn more about Dean. This far out it’s hard to say who could win. But there is a perceptions game that is being played by many in the media, the DLC, corporate America and on the right. Call Dean too far to the left and everyone will back away from him. Strangely though he seems to be attracting a large number of rather centrist people, myself included (As anecdotal proof I submit that I voted for Reagan both times and Bush I — couldn’t stand the Dems that ran) . And looking at his record in Vermont (admittedly a small sample) I’d say he’s fairly moderate, not withstanding the civil unions legislation that got him painted in a corner. He will continue to be spun as too far to the left by those in the DLC and on the right but that’s not because he is. In fact, much of the punditry now seem to be saying that he will begin to loose much of those on the left once he makes his priorities known (as much was mentioned in the most recent issue of Newsweek). If he looses the nom because he’s “too far to the left” it will be because that’s the way “they” want you to see him and not because that’s the way he is. Again, I invite you to learn more about him. I’d love to know what you think.

Posted by: dougintexas at August 8, 2003 10:25 PMGeneral Wesley Clark.
When he gets in over the next couple of weeks, it will be all over for the rest of the group, including Dean, who, by the way, I like the best from the group of announced candidates. Clark’s resume trumps Bush in every conceivable way, and his background undermines most if not all of the typically Republican arguments against Democrats.
I agree on Leiberman. Get him out. (Although, the point will be moot when Clark joins the race.)
President Clark. It works for me.
Posted by: Scott at August 27, 2003 05:07 PMI believe it is of the utmost importance that democrats look not at which candidate they like, but rather at which one can defeat King George II. Our current (P)resident has lied to America, Congress, and the UN. He has spoken on TV while the polls were still open in Fla. He has been accused of overseeing the greatest vote fixing scandal in modern times. He has siphoned billions of dollars to big business with massive tax “relief.” He has allowed the worst attack ever on our nation’s soil, under his watch. He has allowed bin Laden and Hussein to escape capture for 778 and 230 days respectively. He has encouraged the three largest one-year defecits in our nation’s history. He allowed the use of chemical weapons (Anthrax from Ft. Dietrich, a US military installation under his command) against his own people (Tom Daschle, NBC, Nat’l Enq.) He has sent over 300 troops to their death without proving any reason (unless you count speculation, lies, conjecture, and forgeries) for their need overseas. He must be stopped in the name of democracy. We must choose a nominee who can WIN, regardless if he stands for every issue we stand for. No Democrat has won the Presidency in 39 years without first being a Southern governor. Since no Southern governors are running at this time, one must think that governors on the whole might stand a better chance than the collection of Senators who have failed recently (Gore, Dukakis, Mondale.) I believe that Howard Dean stands the best chance of winning because he comes from a small state with a rural population. This man can play in Iowa, Nebraska, the Dakotas, etc. He has more charisma and more integrity than his future opponent. Furthermore, the fact that he is willing to stand up to King Geo. II means he has a lot of courage (considering King Geo. I was Director of the CIA for many years.) If this propensity to attack GW Bush and his fourth reich doesn’t get him killed (ala Wellstone, McDonald, Kennedy x2, etc.,) it may help him win the Presidency. Remember, if an uncharismatic Al Gore had won just one of numerous small states he would be President now, and the fighter jets at Langley, VA might have actually scrambled to get the plane that hit the Pentagon. Just remember the victory is not if your particular favorite wins, but if GW Bush and his cronies are removed from office (and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, as Dean would have it.) Remember all of the lies when you go to the polls.
Posted by: Jon at October 29, 2003 08:59 PMYou people are lost! What world do you live in? I guess Al Gore would have been the greatest leader ever! What would a democrate do in the case of 911? He would rolled over like Clinton and we would have been attacted again soon after 911! You people do more damage to this country that terrorist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Elect one of these 9 democrats and watch our country degrade to nothing but a pathetic western european country. the liberals have hurt that continent so much but americans are smarter. i’m an independent but i shake my head at the democratic party. the far left have a scary vision for the future of this nation and most intelligent people will realize that. i love how the left completed blast the republicans for the lies and the war on iraq. i guess clinton was a liar too when he said that iraq possessed wmds and i guess he was wrong too when he bombed iraq in 98. he had 5 chances to get osama in the 90s but didnt act. i’m not gonna act like the rest of the left and name call and debate without nothing the facts so i wont stoop to your level as clark has by blaming bush for 9/11. all i can say is good luck if dean gets the nomination because hes gonna need more than that. and keep on rooting for alqida in iraq so you can get your canidate elected as president.
Posted by: JOE at November 11, 2003 07:55 PMI was looking at your chart that “plots the presidents’ approval ratings across their terms in office, going back as far as Carter.” You seemed to be quite gleeful to point out republican bad numbers. I have just one question. How come Jimmy Carter’s ratings are on your chart?????
