She Who Laughs Last

Great column by Frank Rich in today’s New York Times. While the headline - Why Liberals Are No Fun (registration required) - may be a little off-putting to some, he makes two key points - one is that rage is building among Democrats and two, that in politics, timing is everything. It’s a lesson I learned well while working on the Mondale-Ferraro and Dukakis-Bentsen campaigns. Just one criticism - I don’t think he answers his own headline. Believe me, I’m liberal and I think I’m loads of fun. Okay, maybe not loads but I’ve got a hell of a sense of humor. Anyway, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I don’t understand why people find Bill O’Reilly amusing. I guess some people find others misfortune funny.

Having been the butt of jokes for my male pattern baldness, I have difficulty finding humor at someone else’s expense.

Unless it’s George Bush.

I could never get a laugh making fun of someone’s personhood. I’m too politically correct.

When I make jokes about Hillary Clinton they sound forced and not funny at all.

24 hour Liberal TV? I don’t watch much tv. It’s a wasteland, except for C SPAN and the Weather Channel.

Who needs Liberal media? We’ve got NPR!

a few thoughts:

1. Al Franken is a buffoon (in the Michael Moore manner). His approach to politics is rather shallow and half-informed (though funny at times).

2. Really the liberal who used the airwaves the best was Norman Lear in the 70’s. However, he conveyed his messages through his shows. (One wonders if a show like All in the Family would have been allowed in these market-driven times).

3. Amy Goodman’s radio show, Democracy Now, on Pacifica Radio is good, persuasive and fairly well-informed. A good counterweight to Rush.

4. Just a bit about the charge that Republicans are united (behind 9 principles, etc), while Democrats are not. I think the 2004 election will unite the left to get rid of bush whatever the cost.

5. Al Gore is a funny witty guy. Now that he’s out of the limelight, I have a feeling that America will enjoy taking a second look at him. Remember he had a short lived career as a journalist.

6. the left has the youth culture (MTV, concerts, counterculture), while the right has organized religion and established business interests. Perhaps a station like MTV provides a rough barometer of where younger audiences are going.

Just some advice from a conservative….hey why am i giving you guys pointers i should just shut up.

Pete,

Keep giving us that advice. I hope the GOP is as a blind as your advice is!

Red herring? Pete, he lied us into war. That’s treason, my friend.

Sure, a neocon would like it to be overlooked. Your guy Bush is a national travesty!
