"Been Dazed and Confused for so long it's not true."
So, where are those WMDs, Mr. Bush? I see that you’re blaming the CIA for your ineptitude. Good job Reagan had Ollie North and you’ve got George Tenet it’s good to see that someone learns from history, especially when it comes to wars and scapegoats. I knew that Rumsfeld and team wouldn’t let themselves topple guess you learned about that from Mr. Kissinger, right? But what I want to know is why? What are you gaining from this? At least Reagan didn’t leave our Constitutional Rights in a shambles (or unavailable) and he didn’t try to take down the reputations of other countries (like France and the UK) with him so what is on your agenda? We’re still wondering…
Posted by huxley75 at July 16, 2003 11:57 AMIt’s the exact opposite of Marxist Socialism. It’s unchecked Capitalism where those at the top oppress those below them (instead of the other way). Some have chosen to call it imperialism or neo-imperialism (since traditional capitalism only seeks to control markets instead of whole economies).
I myself am willing to let this run it’s course (and hopefully speed it up so the damage is not as bad in the long term), because through the failure of this experiment, people will realize that corporations and individuals (rich and the poor) should all be on equal terms (rights) and tolerant of one another, with the government acting as the counterweight when one group tries to stamp out the other.
I predict another revolution (other than the one we’re experiencing now) before it’s all over, maybe in 10-15 years. Perhaps we will be able to dust off the constituion, tape it back together and have a truly tolerant society.
Posted by: Stephen VanDyke at July 16, 2003 01:41 PMStephen, I have often commented the same sentiment you exhibit in your second paragraph. I told my wife during the Gingrich era that we should all vote Republican. Give them the full control of Congress and the presidency, and let them show their true colors by having their way with our nation.
Let them prove to themselves that their idealistic pure capitalism unfettered by government will in fact repeat the impending doom of the Hoover laissez faire doctrine.
I often hear intellectual conservatives quote Adam Smith. It is obvious that they did not read Smith’s earlier work, The Theory of Moral Sentiment, which was the precursor to his Wealth of Nations. The short term ‘invisible hand’ of self interest must be countered by the long term moral sentiment that distinguishes humans from all other species.
Translation: Unfettered capitalism results in social demise unless social conscience acts to manage unbridled greed.
However, if my parent’s recollection of the depression and Pearl Buck’s accounts are accurate, the price of depression is far too high to pay.
I heard today on MSNBC that the recession only lasted 8 months and was over at the end of 2001. Look how long it is taking to recover from it. The jobless rate in human terms is devastating if you are the one who can’t get employed.

At least this emans no more Ally McBeal spin-offs. ;-)

The US government is actually paying the sudanese for the aspirin factory we destroyed. Saddam was still in power when he left office.
Did Bill Clinton mislead the American people when he said the aspirin factory was a biological weapons facility? Was it bad intel? Who was in charge of the CIA then? Thats right. Tenet was appointed by Clinton and is STILL in charge. What did he know and when did he know it? HMMMMM?
Clinton on regime change…
“The best way to end that threat once and for all is with a new Iraqi government — a government ready to live in peace with its neighbors, a government that respects the rights of its people,” Clinton said. HMMPH. NEXT!
