Pretty Soon, We'll Be Talking Real Money

I’m working on a strategy idea that I haven’t got quite figured out yet. I’ll get back to you when I’ve got it worked through. Nothing too radical. It has something to do with uniting behind a candidate and not worrying about what the unified message will be right now. And the money raised to date makes me think I’m on to something.

I worked advance for the Dukakis-Bentsen campaign and learned a hard lesson about campaigns that are so focused on "the message" they lose sight of the person inside the candidate. I've never publicly shared my campaign experiences but expect to as this blog evolves. Again, nothing too radical, but being in the trenches, even if it was almost 20 years ago, gives you a perspective that most will never have. More on that later.

While some of these numbers are likely inflated, it struck me that the fundraising disparity between GWB and any Democratic candidate is daunting. But when you add up the entire field's expected takes, the numbers match up pretty evenly.

Now don't get your shorts all bunched up. I'm not suggesting we thwart the primary process. Not yet, anyway. I'm just thinking that if we all know what's wrong with this picture, why doesn't someone(s) do something about it? (While answers are always appreciated, that's largely a rhetorical question.)

Here's to another fun week in Watchblog land!
