Is It Still the Economy, Stupid?
ABC.com’s The Note thinks this article is the most significant news anaylsis about Campaign 2004 to date. What do you think?
Posted by 9thwave at June 18, 2003 01:17 PMWhat’s the point of blaming the Democrats about the economy? Granted, the “irrantional exuberance” of the Clinton era has evaporated and Bush’s return to Voodoo Economics (or worse) threatens to keep the US economy boxed in for the next 200 years, but who’s fault is it, really? I understand that the Democrats aren’t in the majority but they aren’t speaking out either. Grow some cajones, people! And I’m not just talking to Democrats, but Republicans and Third-party voters who are just sitting back apathetically while the US sends all of its jobs overseas and we face a European style jobless rate. Balancing the budget may not bring about prosperity but lowering Federal taxes (which will increase state and local taxes), saddling schools with unattainable goals, and requiring State and Local police forces to work without pay during heightened alert days (or weeks) sure isn’t going to help anything out.
Posted by: huxley75 at June 18, 2003 03:32 PMThe economy should be a major concern for a lot of Americans but it hasn’t been brought out yet as a major issue. Until the middle class starts hurting in the pocketbook and realizing that the reason for it is a faltering economy and rising unemployment they will not care much about it.
Honestly, I don’t think most Americans are even thinking about the 2004 elections yet. Most people don’t become politically aware until after the leading candidates have emerged from the pack. Defining the hot issues now is a bit premature.
All it takes is one more major terrorist attack in the U.S. and suddenly the leading issue that will decide the 2004 elections will be Homeland Security.
