UN exempts US from tribunal
But it’s not like they had a choice, really. The US got the approval they wanted, a one year extension to the international tribunal exemption.
But wait, there’s more.
The long-term goal is to gain complete exemption from all international tribunals for any and all US officials. The US diplomatic front has been strong-arming smaller, poorer nations, coaxing them to sign Article 98. This agreement states the the nations will not pursue international charges against US officials.
Responsible? Well, no. Classic US approach to international diplomacy? I think so.
As much as I would like to blame the Bush Administration for this move, I know better. If Clinton, Gore, or any other Democrat was in office the same tactics would be used. Why?
Well, I'll answer my question with a question:
Is our exemption from any and all international accoutability necessary for our continued riegn as the One World Super Power?
Posted by Ryan at June 15, 2003 10:37 AMThe Superpower reason is but one. More to the point, I think that it’s still about the economy. It’s not about being the bully, it’s about economic globalism and making sure the roads are paved for Western business dominance around the globe.
Posted by: grover at June 15, 2003 02:56 PMHistorically, it’s always been about the business.
Read the book Lies My Teacher Told Me. We have a long history of exploitation of this type. And the party in power seems largely irrelevant.
